For me, the most surprising thing about this book is how easy it is to read. Despite the fact that it is making important and challenging theoretical and historical arguments, it is nonetheless so well written that the arguments are easy to follow. Unlike so many serious books, I found this book a pleasure to read.This book is important in that it challenges both common and scholarly conceptions of the Victorian era in ways which open some possibilities for rethinking our conceptions not only of that time, but of our own selves, and of the time in which we live.Anybody who is interested in current debates over gay marriage, what it means to be a woman (or a man), or identity politics in general will likely find this book both interesting and valuable.Anybody who is a fan of Victorian novels will likely find this book fascinating.Anybody who is immersed in contemporary Continental philosophy will find this book powerful. However, I am confident that you will find this book to be clear and easy to read even if you have never read any Continental philosophy (or don't even know what that term means).Finally, please see the other reviews for more details about the arguments of this book.

Boring....reads like someone's thesis. Interesting subject but I couldn't get through the dry presentation. I always try to finish a book, no matter how long or poorly written. However I just could not finish this one. It was too painful. A shame because I was looking forward to reading about such an interesting subject.

Meh, what I've read, author focuses too much on the fine nuances of women "birching" each other and how they got off on it. Kind of feel like the author thinks that's sexy. I don't. But then, I am an anomaly to the human race and sexuality in general.

I just could not keep my eyes open during this read. The paragraphs seems to just run together, and the subject matter was not exactly as I thought it would be. I suppose I did not read enough reviews before buying this. My fault. It is not that I don't appreciate good research, and to those who enjoy reading a format like that will love this, but it is not my cuppa tea. The information seemed to be redundant to me. I was like, OK, I get it, women were in to each other. They wrote letters to each other with ever so slightly witty puns so that only they would know they liked each others boobs. Yadda Yadda.Didn't like it.

Sharon Marcus's "Between Women" is that rare academic book - utterly readable and absorbing and juicy. It not only re-casts Victorian literature in a new light, by examining the roles that women characters have in securing the marriage plot, but ushers the reader into a new way of understanding women's surprising power in Victorian society. The book argues that women and female friendship wielded considerable influence in Victorain society- in novel plots and in the work of marriage reform thinkers and leaders. Her work on "the plot of female amity" has been called ground-breaking and I can see why. Sharon Marcus's pages on "Great Expectations," for example, are just amazing, bringing the reader along, at every step, as this brilliant, clear mind details the charged interactions of Miss Havisham, Estella, and Pip. "Between Women" uses a fascinating array of source materials - not just novels, but pornographic magazines, fashion magazines, and treatises of social reform movements. She points out that sometimes female friendship meant friendship and sometimes it meant lesbian relationships. John Stuart Mill, for example, modeled his marriage reform ideas on the equitable dynamics at play in contemporary lesbian couples. The book's exploration of how mothers and daughters, and daughters with their dolls, were depicted in illustrations, often with sado-masochistic overtones, is pretty unforgettable and quite persuasive. It was fascinating to read how the language of fashion magazines and the language of pornographic journals were often the same. The writing in "Between Women" is wonderful and the research well-organized, diverse, and accessible. It is true that Sharon is a great friend of mine, but please know that it is also true that I would not write these sentences if I did not believe them. I read and adored this book and I hugely recommend it, to academics and non-academics (which I am), alike.

I read this with my teen daughter who wanted to learn more about Victorian England.We both found the book absolutely mind-blowing. That women married in Victorian England, and it was accepted and even lauded gave us both a new perspective on current gay marriage debates. And the details of Victorian women's 'discipline' for their sons was also incredibly thought provoking.I recommend this for moms and daughters interested in discussing sexuality and marriage, relationships and values. Learning how incredibly differently Victorians viewed sexuality opens a window into the variable ways societies construct human relationships. A fabulous read.

This book is an absolutely brilliant, lucid, beautifully written, engrossing exploration of the relationships between women in Victorian England. Marcus' arguments are fresh and deeply surprising -- revolutionary, really -- yet somehow manage to feel utterly inevitable after the fact. I love the breadth of sources -- novels, diaries, fashion magazines, pedagogical manuals, pornography -- Marcus draws upon, and the stunningly diverse modes of relatedness she portrays as available to Victorian women. I rarely find myself reading academic books, yet for me "Between Women" was a real page turner. I recommend it very highly.

This looked like it had been a bestseller so I thought I'd try it. Although it was easy enough to read and had no bad grammar or typos, the style is very "flat" and reads more like stage directions than a novel. The author does more "telling" than "showing" if you know what that means. None of the characters are likeable or sympathetic, so the only suspense is to find out "who done it" -- and, again, I didn't care much, beyond mild curiosity. Also, there seemed to be a loose plot thread at the end, that was never explained. A key piece of evidence just seems to go away and the police ignore an obvious witness/suspect. There is also a final twist that the author must have thought would be shocking, but it seems like she had no other idea for how to end the story. If you want a quick read without deep emotional depth or artistic style, you might like it.

Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbors Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor.They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed

There were many good things in this novel; it was suspenseful, fast-paced and slightly unpredicable at times. The story and plot kept me engaged.The writing was mediocre. I found myself becoming frustrated with the "third person" style narrative. When the narration is something the reader repeatedly thinks about, it's probably not a good thing. Narration is something that shouldn't be noticed, but the way this book was written, I noticed it a LOT.There was not one likeable character, not one. It's hard to get excited about a book when you really don't care what happens to the characters. As for the plot, it wasn't anything new - quite predicable.Once everything comes together, the story becomes a bit nonsensical. There is no way the dad would get off scot-free. There are also several characters introduced that never get developed (the husband of the neighbor is one) as well as side stories that never get resolved. There are several loose ends, and that drives me nuts.I've not read anything by this author previously, and I probably wouldn't read another of her books. With that said, the book was good enough to be worth the time.

I read a lot of books, and really have trouble finding fiction that isn't the same old detective murder stories. I thought this was a great story with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It would be hard to talk about the book without giving some of the plot away, but it kept me reading, and was truly hard to put down. I usually read from 11 pm until about 1 am, then go to bed. I ended up staying up until about 2 am or later each night trying to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the book was very well written and easy to read. As soon as I finished it, I found another Shari Lapena book to start.

I hate books like this: no redeeming characters, surprising twists that aren’t really surprising at all, and dull, unimaginative prose. This just isn’t a good book.

The writing style is painfully simplistic. Subject-verb-object. Subject-verb-object. It seems 9 out of 10 sentences begins with a name."Marco sits down. Marco is tired. Marco is trying to think. Anne gazes out the window. Anne is sad. Anne and Marco sit in silence."That's not actually from the book, but it might as well be. It's as if the author has no formal education beyond grade school.The plot is not original by any means. The characters are shallow because they are all described in short, simple sentences. "Anne came from money. Marco did not."I can't believe I paid $13 for this book. Not worth it.

A pleasant and informative book about two famed diarists and their intertwined lives and interests. Rather than a straight double biography, the author, Margaret Willes, uses the lives and personal interests of Pepys and Evelyn as springboards to examine various aspects of life in seventeenth century England, such as court politics, gardens, libraries, and plays.This book, I think, would be enjoyed by anyone interested in English history and the early development of a civilized and learned society.(Readers interested in this time period may also want to acquire a copy of the very good "Collecting the World: Hans Sloane and the Origins of the British Museum" (2017) by James Delbourgo. There are some ties with Sloane, Pepys, and Evelyn that are noted by Ms. Willes; for example, Sloane, a medical doctor, performed Pepys' autopsy!)

This book provided additional background to the setting and life of Pepys. The account of John Evelyn provides deeper appreciation of this troubled period in English history.

I am a retired English teacher, Pepys has always been my favorite character in English literature. So the book was very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it

"The Curious World of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn" is a biography of both Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn. The author quoted from their diaries and personal correspondence, but she generally summarized what was said (probably because that's easier to read and understand).She divided their lives into several themes: public careers and wider context of what was going on, descriptions of their family and major friends, their involvement in the Royal Society and interest in science, Pepys' interest in the theatre and music, Evelyn's interest in gardens and gardening and his books on horticulture, and their libraries (books, ballads, prints, etc.). The author also threw in some information about tea, coffee, and chocolate along with other imported consumer goods (including flowers and other plants).These men lived through the Restoration of Charles II, the plague, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was interesting to see their views on what was going on and to get a sense of what life was like at that time. It's a quick look at what was happening and what some people's attitudes and interests were like. Overall, I'd recommend this book to those interested in this time period in England.I received a free ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Encyclopedic coverage of pre-literate knowledge systems but ethnographically a bit rambling and thus disjointed or, least, far-fetched. Also, the British translation seems at times verbose.

Whenever I see reviews that say things like “No precis is possible. This extraordinary book must be read” and “No outline is possible; I can only say that reading this book is a most stimulating intellectual exercise,” I suspect that the Emperor’s New Clothes Syndrome is raging. And I think there’s some of that going on here. I think the big thing that fools people is that the French can go on and on forever without saying much of anything. Maybe they take joy in their language and it loses something in translation. I remember as a young actor playing the title role in Camus’ CALIGULA. How much there was to memorize! Some of those speeches went on for pages. Then in my 30s I read Proust. He could make single sentences that went on for more than a page! This book was not easy reading. It took me four days to plow through the first 36 pages, primarily because it was a lot of abstract concepts being explained by other abstract concepts. Add to that the French penchant for subordinate clauses within subordinate clauses. I had to get out a pencil and circle the subjects and underline the main verbs in order to make sense of it! Throw in a horribly pedantic translation, which invariably uses an obscure English word over a more familiar one every time. Then top that off with a poor editing job that leaves out the close parenthesis on one occasion and on a couple of others presents the reader with an unintelligible sentence fragment. It was not an easy book to read. But I do feel that the information it contained was valuable and will help me with the project I’m researching.Basically the author says that the “primitive” mind is not so “primitive” after all; there is a lively intellect at work, which has a system of classification not all that different from that of the modern biologist or physicist. That intellect, however, is inaccessible to us most of the time because we conceive reality differently. The modern mind perceives existence within the context of history. The “primitive” mind does not recognize “history,” but a never-ending always-was-always-is existence. We must understand this point of view if we are to make sense of “primitive” culture. That’s an oversimplification, but I think that sums it up.I’ll give the ideas involved here five stars. I’ll give Levi-Strauss’s ability to communicate those ideas four stars. The translator and the editor get two stars each. That gives us three and a quarter stars, which seems to me about right.

Unlike some of Lev-Strauss' other book (Myth and Meaning, Tristes Tropiques), this one is heavy going. LS sets forth his theories in abstract almost mathematical terms. It's a hard slog but well worth it. You get a real sense of his very deep thinking and understand why he is one of the giants of anthropology.

Allow this classical Anthropologist to re-engineer the way you conceive the world. Even if you're not a humanities major this will not so long a read will certainly not disappoint.

As expected.

The title that Levi-Strauss gave to The Savage Mind is a purposeful misnomer. If one did not know better, one might think that the mind of the so-called savage is materially different from the mind of his equally so-called civilized brethren. In fact, the opposite is true. The translation from the French is "Untamed Thinking," a punning reference to the rather unsettling notion that both the savage tribes of popular stereotyping and the cultured elegance of the West engage equally in untamed thinking. Adherents of Western culture like to think--even to brag--that their mode of ratiocination is the very height of rationality and that the thought processes of primitive tribes are based primarily on simplistic homologies between totem and blood animal. The Tarzan movies of the 1930s which portray natives as mindless adherents of a Snake God come to mind. Levi-Strauss notes that the vision of the typical anthropologist is tinted with the fairly recent invention of writing. Each generation of scientist can preserve in writing for perpetuity the results of their findings. It is difficult for such a Western-trained mind to conceive of another multi-generational record that is not based on writing but is every bit as scientific and objective. Where the Westerner looks outward to record data on a fixed medium, the tribesman looks inward to establish an ongoing series of personal relationships that ground him in a mythic medium that flows logically from his non-writing oriented world view. One might justifiably point out that the Western anthropologist has his world view at a disadvantage relevant to his shaman counterpart in that the former has been de-linked from an oral tradition of which the latter makes full use.What Levi-Strauss emphasizes in The Savage Mind is that the logic that works so eminently well in the West founders elsewhere. What the shaman had to work with was what was readily at hand: knowledge of animals and their habits, cutting and chopping tools, and other assorted bits and pieces of daily life. Levi-Strauss referred these ready-to-use objects as bricolage. The logical mind of the shaman intuited that this bricolage would be essential to relate his tribe to the Mysteries of the Universe. Using bricolage, the shaman was able not only to be structured in itself but also to create structures up and down the twin axes of the syntagm and paradigm rows and columns. Essentially, the bricoleur was able to use what was at hand: a myriad of relevant analogical relationships that linked the reality of his life to the assumed reality of the next. These analogies were grounded in the polar binaries typical of Saussurean logic. Here, the bricoleur's focus was centered not on the underlying similarities of the binary but on their relational differences. He could then discern these differences as imparting both form and meaning to that particular myth. He could not, of course, so effortlessly articulate what an anthropologist might term how one difference could act as a metaphor for another, but such differences were clear enough in his own mind. Levi-Strauss ultimately concludes that the thought processes of the shaman and those of the anthropologist are inextricably a function of the bricolage available to both. For the shaman, it was an oral tradition. For the anthropologist it was a written one. The modes of relational thought may have differed but basic human smarts did not.
