Review

Praise for Trevor Paglen and I COULD TELL YOU. . .    “ Gives readers a peek into the shadows . . . Department of Defense spokesman Bob Mehal told Newsweek that it ‘would not be prudent to comment on what patches did or did not represent classified units.’ That’s OK. Some mysteries are more fun when they stay unsolved.” —Karen Pinchin, Newsweek   “An art book that presents peculiar shoulder patches created for the weird and top secret programs funded by the Pentagon’s black budget... an achievement.” —Timothy Buckwalter, San Francisco Chronicle   “ Some of the worst crimes in the American landscape are hiding in plain sight, and nobody has ever pursued them more thoroughly or explained them more chillingly and engagingly than Trevor Paglen. What he is doing is important, fascinating, and groundbreaking.” —Rebecca Solnit, author of Wanderlust   “ The iconography of the United States military. Not the mainstream military, with its bars and ribbons and medals, but the secret or ‘black projects’ world, which may or may not involve contacting aliens, building undetectable spy aircraft, and experimenting with explosives that could make atomic bombs look like firecrackers. Here, mysterious characters and cryptic symbols hint at intrigue much deeper than rank, company, and unit.” —UTNE Reader   “ Of course, issuing patches for a covert operation sounds like a joke . . . but truth be told, these days everything is branded. Military symbols are frequently replete with heraldic imagery—some rooted in history, others based on contemporary popular arts that feature comic characters—but these enigmatic dark-op images, in some cases probably designed by the participants themselves, are more personal, and also more disturbing, than most.” —Steven Heller, The New York Times Book Review   “ Trevor Paglen gets into the black heart of America’s black sites. There is no better guide to this great American mystery. What goes on inside these bases will determine the future of warfare—and who we are—for the rest of the century.” —Robert Baer, former case officer at the CIA and author of See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA’s War on Terrorism

This book became irresistible when a large, well-illustrated article about it appeared in the New York Times ("Inside the Black Budget" by William J. Broad) on April 1. The book came in the mail today. It is very good. Folks who are interested in the subject might really like it, but, as the spread in the Times indicates, there is a general audience also for a look behind the green door if the presentation is accessible. In the case of this modest book, it is small in size and just right in length. The author, Trevor Paglen, states that this book is not intended to be a reference for historians and with that important caveat, I recommend it highly. Mr. Paglen, a candidate for a PhD in geography at UC Berkeley, treats the subject with respect and seems to have enjoyed himself, as do the patch designers and the people who approved those designs. His next book (and his thesis), says the Times, is about secret bases and "undisclosed locations" in the US. It is called Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World and will be published by Dutton next February (2009). While you're waiting, have a look at Top Secret Tourism: Your Travel Guide to Germ Warfare Laboratories, Clandestine Aircraft Bases and Other Places in the United States You're Not Supposed to Know About by Harry Helms, which is also recommended.

I found myself gaping as I read this book, by turns astonished that classified personnel could get away with having a sense of humor on the job and cackling madly at the inside jokes. There appears to be a rich language of symbolism in the patches' patterns, and many an afternoon could be whiled away by the reader attempting to piece it together. I've already recommended this book to several friends, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone curious about military heraldry or black projects.

What a great book! If you are a conspiracy nut, military historian, believe in aliens, collect military artifacts, are into aviation, or any of the above, this may be a really fun book for you! This is not a dense or didactic book, but rather, it is a picture book with a paragraph or two about each entry. A good supplement to a more serious collection, or a unique coffee table book.

I love this fascinating little book. It is a tiny fact-filled volume, with a patch from a different top-secret test flight or satellite reconnaissance unit on each page. Where possible, the author describes what the patch symbolism represents and where the unit was located. This is a thrilling little book for anyone that was involved in these or similar "black" programs themselves, and maybe even more intriguing for civilians. Not the dimensions of the book - it is very small; the patches are photographed at approximately life size and each page is not much bigger than each patch. This book focuses mainly on Air Force and NRO secret units. I'd love to see one of these for military intelligence and NSA units.

The Black Projects that are covered in this book are those that you would expect, not the ones I was hoping for. Almost all of the patches are from now declassified projects that took place between 1980-2000 and they are vastly in the field of aeronautics. Trevor Paglen gets about as close as any one could I suppose without being destroyed, and for that I respect his work. I guess I was hoping for more glimpses, more of a deeper overall survey of the special projects world. I certainly had my hopes too high for such a tiny book with such a narrow focus. If he had added more conjecture to entertain the reader he would have reduced its believability. This book is worth reading if you can borrow a copy (it will take you a couple hours to read), but it's only worth buying if you are a military historian or are an avid patch collector.

A great summary coffee table book that introduces the esoteric symbols, language & mythology of the top secret black world. Patches of squadrons that, supposedly don't exist, a lot are some that have been declassified, but a great view into the cult ure :)

The book itself is alright, the patches which are supposed to represent "black op" projects are well presented and each has a story to go along with them. The problem is that there is no way independently verify the stories.I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the author, it was based on this book but also covered his other books (which IMHO are much more interesting and easier to independently verify) which were written on government rendition programs and secret bases. The book overall is good but the stories sound more like vet stories you would hear in the VFW over a couple of pints.

This is a fun and unique book and worth picked up for any patch or military enthusiast. This in the only books I have seen written on military morale patches. The cover has an actual embroidered patch affixed to it. It is a bit out of date and deals almost exclusively with Air Force unit's, the patches are good and the write ups are pretty well done. I would like to see a second version and would love to see this as the first in a series. But I don't know if the military patch collector is a big enough demographic to support it. That said if you find this at all fascinating or interesting its worth picking up.

I haven't finished reading this yet, but so far, and from flipping through it, it's terrific. I trained for three marathons using the 3-day-a-week FIRST training plan years ago. These guys know their physiology of running. I like that they have geared this to the "masters" runners, of which I am one. I'm excited to have a new training plan to follow. Thanks, for writing this book.

I am a 54 year old masters runner, who truly would love to run forever. I found much wisdom in this book and I do plan to follow the strength and stretching routines daily. I have ordered multiple copies for my running friends. I have read my share of running books and articles and I found the writing to be engaging with just the right level of science.

Really liked this book - the authors research was very interesting and agreed with other authorities. It just seemed like it took a long time to get to the program and then that's it. Kind of a disconnect between the first part and the second. Overall very good information.

This was a good running book for aging runners or anyone wanting to lessen injuries. The FIRST program is unusual as they stress quality over quantity.

Been running for over 30 years and still this book has good information and guidelines

Not a lot of useful content to be honest for anyone that's been running at all or active in their lifetime. The first five chapters were completely unnecessary.

I am now more aware than ever of the importance of cross training. This book shows me how to avoid injury.

As I am new to running , this book really educated me on training and doing it safely. I will use many of the explained methods in my running life.
