Well worth reading, even if you don't agree with his solutions to the issues, this book nicely details how modern capitalism went off the rails. In particular, Wall Street, which used to perform a valuable function in setting market prices, has now become a largely non-productive tax on the economy. One of his solutions is to encourage broader and stronger unions, so I wish he had gone in to how much the unions were complicit in their own self destruction, due to all the nutty work rules. I see large corporations and large unions as being just two sides of the same corrosive coin.

I have been recommending this book far and wide to anyone and everyone who will listen. Not necessarily because I agree with everything in the book, but because of Reich’s simple, laymen explanation of the building blocks of the “free” market – property, monopoly, contract, bankruptcy and enforcement – and how those elements are, in fact, determined by the government. As Reich himself says repeatedly throughout the book, it’s not a conflict between “government” on one hand and the “free market” on the other hand. The government, through laws, regulations and judicial proceedings, actually creates the market. It’s not even a matter of the size of the government – “big government” vs. “small government”. It’s a matter of who controls the government and in whose interests these laws, regulations and judicial proceedings work – the majority of the people/society as a whole? Or a rich and influential few? Furthermore, Reich destroys the notion that those rich and influential few deserve the power and wealth that they control because they have “earned it”.After an introductory chapter, Reich spends the first five chapters explaining each of the building blocks of the market and how those can be manipulated to either protect and support the majority of the people or to promote the interests of the powerful few. What types of things can be owned and how is that ownership allocated? Tangible goods may be obvious but what about intangible things like intellectual property, large platforms like the internet or cable, or even labor? Furthermore, what share of any particular market is it okay for any individual or corporation to own? What kinds of contracts can be made, especially in situations in which the parties to a contract may not have equal power? When a party to a contract cannot fulfill it, what protection does such party have? What rights does the creditor have? And when these issues end up in court, how are they decided? In the period after World War II until the 1970s or so, Reich demonstrates how these building blocks were used to protect jobs, health, the environment and the rights and interests of ordinary Americans. But since the 1980s and the rise of “supply sided economics”, and especially since the Citizens United Supreme Court decision earlier this decade, large corporations and powerful individuals have used their influence to encourage elected officials to create laws and policies that favor the interests of the powerful. For instance, he describes at length the patent process and how Big Pharma and others have lobbied to extend patents nearly indefinitely, and how Big Pharma has even paid generic drug companies to delay releasing generic drugs even after the patent has finally expired, which forces Americans to pay very high prices for drugs available much cheaper elsewhere (and Big Pharma has lobbied to restrict Americans from buying such cheaper drugs from foreign pharmacies over the internet). As another example, customers and employees are often forced to sign contracts mandating that disputes be arbitrated by an arbitrator of the company’s choosing (which said arbitrator is most likely to favor the company that is paying them over the customer or employee). Reich gives dozens of other examples of how the “free” market is rigged against ordinary Americans and it’s done intentionally by powerful individuals and corporations exerting their influence on the government in order to create the market in their favor. He demonstrates how these rules and policies redistribute wealth upward as the market works. Talk of “redistribution” of wealth through taxes (generally thought to be “socialist” is a non-starter because the wealth is already redistributed before the fact.Reich goes on to explore and explode the myth of “meritocracy” – the idea that we all “earn” what we “deserve” in the market. Reich points out that that is obviously true in a tautological sense. We get what we get because we can’t get more. But from the working poor to the non-working rich, he demonstrates the fallacies that lie behind such thinking. He looks at how, in the past, the value of labor itself has often been considered to provide a stake in the final output and income of the company itself. After all, no goods or services would be provided without the people who do the work. But over the last few decades, only those providing the capital are viewed as stakeholders, so labor, consumers, and society as a whole loses out.For these reasons I recommend the book to every American to get a clear understanding of the distortion of the “free market” propaganda. But that’s not to say that the book doesn’t have its flaws. For one thing, Reich relies rather heavily on the passive voice. While he does make it clear that these laws and policies have been implemented intentionally at the behest of the powerful few, he denies that these powerful few have any moral culpability. They are just acting on their own self-interest, the same as you and I. I’m sorry, but no. My taking a job, for instance, in which I know that other candidates lost out because I succeeded, is not at all the same as, for instance, repealing the laws that protected commercial banking funds from risky investment and speculation so that big bankers can gamble with federally-protected savings accounts. Most of us consider the needs of other people as we go about doing the best to provide for ourselves and our families. Most of us don’t feel the need to reduce food stamps and take money out of poor people’s mouths just so that we could make another couple million. In fact, there’s a reason why most of us are not multi-millionaires or billionaires – we’re simply not ruthless enough.Secondly (and relatedly) Reich doesn’t talk nearly enough about the mechanisms of this influence. He talks a lot about “lobbying”, but he really doesn’t explore what that word means. When I was in high school civics, we learned that lobbying is simply talking or writing to your elected official to try to convince him or her of your point of view and get his/her vote in your favor. But if that’s all it is, why do companies suddenly have so much more influence that ordinary citizens, especially considering how many more of us there are? So the guy from Monsanto is just that much more persuasive than Farmer Joe from Kansas? Or is there something more behind Monsanto’s persuasiveness that Farmer Joe doesn’t have access to? Sure, Monsanto can afford to hire people to do nothing but talk to Congressmen, while Farmer Joe is busy planting, tilling and harvesting his fields. Reich does talk about campaign contributions and promises of lucrative jobs post-government service, but he really needs to go into much more depth. He could also stand to talk in depth about the media. The major media, including print and broadcast services, are almost entirely owned by six media corporations. Reich does cover this a tiny bit in his section on monopoly, but the implications are staggering. In addition to the money pouring into politician’s campaign coffers, citizens are hampered by a lack of information. There is almost a complete media black-out on certain aspects of how the government is run, unless one spends one’s time scouring blogs and alternate media. The media also control the range of “acceptable” opinions – anything outside that range is the lunatic fringe. For example, should we invade XYZ Muslim country with boots on the ground, or should we contain the situation with drones and special ops? Not getting involved at all is crazy talk. Should we bail out the banks or not? Bailing out the people and letting the banks fail is crazy talk.Reich’s final chapters address his solutions for the ills he lays out in the majority of the book. Most such solutions are simply repealing the bad laws and policies that have been enacted as he’s explained earlier in the book. Get rid of Citizen’s United. Outlaw the revolving door between government service and the corporate world. Reduce patent lengths. Outlaw pay-for-delay. Etc. Reich seems to believe that such moves are completely possible. I’d like to believe him. With an informed and energetic citizenry, I think he would be right. But one of the most impressive aspects of the neoliberal takeover has been the containment of the populace. We as a nation are either so busy making ends meet or so distracted by games and gadgets, that we’ve willingly allowed a corporate coup under our very noses. More and more people are waking up and realizing what’s happening, but at the same time we have less and less voice. Our survival will depend upon not getting sidetracked by the liberal vs. conservative, Democrat vs. Republican narrative and coming together as citizens of a nation that are all in it together, whether we want to be or not. But the same people who control our government and the media (and, more and more, education) benefit from these false fights and will stir them up as long as they can. I’m not sure I have faith in the American people to see past the propaganda.I will say again that I salute Reich for writing such a clear and cogent explanation of the fallacies of the “government vs. free market” debate. Again, every American should read this book. My criticisms are just my wishing that he’d taken his arguments just a bit further, and such criticisms are, perhaps, just a bit unfair – like criticizing the receiver who returned a kick-off for ninety yards, but didn’t quite make it the last couple yards for a touchdown. Reich’s voice is especially important now as we head into the primaries for the 2016 elections. Reich does list a few criticisms of the Bill Clinton administration in which he served and what he wishes would have been done differently. I hope he’ll loudly raise those same criticisms as Hillary campaigns for the Democratic nomination.

If you’ve ever been exposed to Robert Reich’s “Wealth and Poverty” course at UC Berkeley, perhaps through the film Inequality for All, or heard him speak in public, you know that there are few people alive today who are his equal in the ability to explain complex economic and social issues so cogently and compellingly. And few indeed are as funny as he is, either: the man could make a go of a career with a standup act.capitalismHowever, there’s not a lot of humor in Saving Capitalism, Reich’s fifteenth book. In this brilliant long essay, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor takes on the economic issues of the day from a perspective that rarely comes to light in public discourse: he rejects the widespread assumption that a “free market” exists independent of government.“A market — any market — requires that government make and enforce the rules of the game,” Reich writes. The size of government, the preoccupation of the American Right for the past four decades, is a distraction from the reality that big corporations and the country’s wealthiest people have steadily rigged the rules that structure the economy — through lobbying, massive political contributions, and the courts. Society’s biggest challenge today, inequality in wealth and income, was the inevitable result of the steady shift of power to the “1%” from the rest of us, as Occupy Wall Street so famously pointed out. “The critical debate for the future is not about the size of government,” Reich adds; “it is about whom government is for.” This is a view of American society from 30,000 feet.Reich cites a study by two scholars who set out to gauge “the relative influence . . . of economic elites, business groups, mass-based interest groups, and average citizens.” The study concluded, “The preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” In other words, everything you ever feared about the influence of the 1% is true.As Reich explains in a particularly enlightening chapter, “The Decline of Countervailing Power,” the principal reason why Wall Street, the corporations, and the superrich have managed to enrich themselves at the expense of the middle class and the working poor is that the counterweight to what we call the 1% today has steadily withered away since the 1970s. Reich refers to the “interest groups and membership organizations — clubs, associations, political parties, and trade unions — to which politicians were [once] responsive.”The most potent of these factors was, of course, the labor movement. Following World War II, labor stood toe-to-toe with Big Business when it came to employees’ wages and working conditions and wielded huge influence in Washington. As we’re so painfully aware, that is far from the case today — but the decline of organized labor didn’t happen by accident. It was engineered beginning in the early 1970s by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, and their Republican allies, working from the top down through the courts, the Congress, and state governments across the country. Reich doesn’t tell this story, perhaps because it’s so well known.Saving Capitalism should be required reading for every American who wishes to understand the way our society works today. Unfortunately, though the book has already begun to climb on the bestseller lists, we can be sure that will never happen in an era when a megalomaniacal reality TV star is topping the polls in the Republican presidential primary competition.Robert B. Reich served three presidents — Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton — in the course of a long and distinguished career in academia and government. Currently he is Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

I read this book when I was in aprox. 5th grade. I was young then so I never investigated further but now that I'm older I am reading everything I can about this man and his gift. I bought this book for my son. If you have any interest in self spiritual progress this is a must read! My personal recommendation is read this first to learn about Edgar Cayce first then dive in with both feet. You will be truly blessed by what you will learn.

This is quite possibly one of the most important books ever written. It introduces us to the life and work of Edgar Cayce, one of the best documented psychics (prophets?) ever. Had it not been for works of people such as Cayce, Paul Solomon and a few others, we may be still living in dark ages not really knowing that there is so much more to life than meets the eye (and that modern institutions would have one believe).I also want to add here that I own three copies of this book: the original 1943 edition with publishing date of Dec.1942, printed in 1943 by Henry Holt and Company, Inc.; the 1972 edition printed in 1972 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston and same size and format as the original 1943 book, and the new paperback edition, published in 1997 by the A.R.E. press.Due to a review posted here by a "perceptive lady", I went through pain of comparing the three books (not to mention the cost of acquiring the original first edition) to see if she was telling the truth. Since the new book is so much smaller (dense text of smaller size can save quite a bit of space) I thought that it was quite possible that some contents may have been lost. However, after spending numerous hours comparing the three texts I found absolutely no difference between them. Zero, nothing, zilch, nada, null, bupkis. The new edition, has pictures of Edgar Cayce and A.R.E from the times when it was first founded, which I find a very nice addition. So if anything, the new edition is better than the old one. However, I am old fashioned and I like the big print and hard cover of the old editions. But other than that, absolutely nothing is lost with this new edition. It is just too bad that those who do a really good job are attacked for no good reason. One should make sure that what they claim is true, is really true. And others should also check for themselves before they trust a passionate but untrue review such as the one by the "perceptive lady".

As a lifelong Christian, this book helped clarify and connect my faith with the metaphysical teachings that I've been learning & researching. To read of the struggles this man had trying to understand and use his God given gift of healing while reconciling it with his deeply held Christian beliefs gave me lots of encouragement. The prose was a little old fashion but not hard to read or understand. I highly recommend it for anyone who is being led into the mysterious but still has a faith in the traditional religions.

I recently discovered EC, after hearing a couple of friends talking about him. What I heard tickled my interest enough to search him out and buy some of his books. What I've read so far feels intuitively right to me. I can feel that EC is NOT a fake or a charlatan as so many out there... I came to trust him and to heed what he has to say. Read a book or two about him and make up your own mind. Reading EC has stretched the limits of my own envelop. I'm glad I came across Edgar Cayce!

Very, very interesting. Actually, I feel closer to God after reading this book. That is a good thing.I think he is right. I do believe God was speaking thru him. Cayce kept saying he did not want his gift to cause harm. He said if the gift caused harm it was not from God. if it brought good, it was from God. He gift never hurt anyone....so it had to be from God. Cayce gave all credit to God, not himself. Wish there was someone like him today. Maybe there is - have you heard of John of God in Brazil? He was featured on Oprah's magazine several years ago, Dr. OZ spoke about him as did Dr. Wayne Dryer.

It's been several years since I have studied Cayce or any of his work, but I loved this book! It's clear that the author knew Mr. Cayce and he took great detail in telling the Cayce story. If you find Edgar Cayce and the subject of Clairvoyance as intriguing as I do, then you will enjoy this book. I have visited his museum in Virginia Beach and will never forget the positive energy that I felt while I was there. Most likely, this story will leave you with more questions that may lead you down your own path of discovery. Enjoy!

I originally purchased an early version of Edgar Cayce's, "There Is a River" book. I thought this cover/book was the version that i originally purchased; however this book DID NOT HAVE an ~epilogue chapter on the "Son's of Belial". That is the reason I purchased this book; hence I was disappointed. It seems to me that this book edited out the originally "Sons of Belial" chapter of the end of Cayce's original book. Note there were 3 or 4 covers on this book, I guess each one was a reprint of the earlier version. However they did not contain all of the info of the original one. mike

The personal stories of Cayce's life and the struggle that he went through with his Christian faith and his gift were detailed and interesting. By the time that I finished, I felt as though I knew him and his wife. Some of his remedies are described also and many of his readings were described.

Landscape Drawing in Pencil Frank M Rimes I didn't find this book very helpful. I appreciate this author's approach via presenting a picture and then discussing qualities, problems, solutions etc. But in the sketchy (no pun intended) way he does it here, it is more like a lesson in drawing his specific picture(s). I don't consider myself a REAL artist so maybe the fault is mostly mine. But I still cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Obviously, given that it is an art instruction book, this volume contains numerous illustrations. These illustrations are in landscape page view, not portrait. The kindle cannot cope with this. It turns the landscape pages on their side so if you are viewing on Kindle for PC, you are viewing all images at a rotation of 90 degrees.Amazon really should not be selling art books on kindle until and unless they improve the kindle so that (a) images display as in the book, which means that on Kindle for PC the page width needs to be widened, and (b) it is possible to view in colour. Further, it is essential that art books be viewable properly on Kindle for PC because the small size of other Kindles renders them intrinsically unsuitable for displaying art books.

It's good if you want reference images with barely any words written about the picture. Most pictures contain only slight words on shading being darker there or lighter here, but not much else. No instruction on how to recreate any of the beautiful sketches for ourselves. It's great for reference, like I said, but it just wasn't what I was expecting-But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I read through it and I realized that step-by-step books can only teach so much. But a book like this-one that tells you how to create different textures then illustrates them for you to see and study closely-teaches you more than you'd think possible by just looking at pictures.Makes you slow down and think about what you need to do to create what you want. It's perfect in that, as well as showing some beautiful artwork with techniques a bit dated, but not bad at all.

Note that this is originally from 1929, and the language definitely reflects that. This book doesn't seem to know its audience. The author states this book isn't for beginners, but then covers very beginner pencil techniques, and then jumps directly to very advanced, completed drawings. There is a short paragraph discussing how each drawing was made, but if you understand that paragraph, you don't need the book. A more step-by-step approach would have been infinitely preferable.

It isn't quite what I expected, more of an overview of very basic drawing techniques and then straight into overviews of completed drawings. There really isn't any discussion of suggestions for the beginner on different ways to draw common objects found in landscapes.

This is not a book for beginners. As the author states in the introduction, it is aimed at students who have had some training and experience drawing and have some knowledge of freehand perspective. It is meant “to arouse an interest in the art of pencil technique, especially as it pertains to out of door subjects.” The book was originally published in 1929. The technique referred to is the now all-but-forgotten technique of broad stroke drawing or pencil painting where “each stroke is made in some definite direction, and then left that way...” Other proponents of this technique include Theodore Kautzky (“The Ted Kautzky Pencil Book”), Earnest W. Watson (“The Art of Pencil Drawing”), Ferdinand Petrie (“Drawing Landscapes in Pencil”) and Carl Purcell (“Drawing with Your Artist's Brain”). The strength of this book is in the 22 finished drawings reproduced of a size and quality allowing study of the various strokes used in their creation. A succinct description is provided with each explaining a particular problem solved in the drawing. If you appreciate this type of drawing and are looking for samples to study, this is one of the few books available that is dedicated to the technique.

Only a good book if you are interested in reading a book by an arrogant person who claims (quite literally many times in the first couple chapters) that his style is the only style that is worthwhile. Then there are sketches at the end with no instruction. As a matter of fact, he says in the beginning it would be unethical to copy his masterpieces. Find a different Landscape book.

Just plates of completed work. Simple, high-level points discussed, but no step-by-step instruction or approaches to drawing landscapes.

Let me start by stating I have had the opportunity to view the artist’s work at many art events in the Pacific Northwest. I have purchased several prints. I have always been intrigued knowing the work was created on an iPhone and when I heard about this book being published I was very interested to ‘look behind the curtain’ so to speak.I have also had experience with the author in a corporate environment and seen firsthand her ability to lead large teams and teach so I had high expectations in regards to learning ‘how to’ in an efficient and easy manner.I was not disappointed. The writing style, instructions, illustrations, and phone screen shots are all carefully blended to help the reader with both the ‘art’ aspects of photography and ‘technical’ aspects of the tools and software. After reading I feel I could move forward and begin to practice techniques and methodologies that the author shared to create my own iPhone photography artwork.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in creative and novel uses for a tool (mobile phone) most all of us carry around with us on a daily basis.

A useful book especially beginners, a little out of date now. Not all the recommended apps are necessary. Start with Snapseed and for more adventurous stuff check out iColorama, two beautiful softwares. The book will be a good guide along the way. Here,s one of mine with both apps.

OK for the price. It's much more like a guide to direct you to buying other apps to enhance/manipulate your photos than a guide to getting more out of what your phone already offers.

This book is a must have if you own an iPhone…even if you don’t take pictures. Why? Because after reading this book you’ll want to. I only wish it had been published over a year ago…there’s so much I had to learn the hard way. Just the first four chapters would have saved me months of learning by trial and error. Starting with chapter five…Choosing a Camera App…the book takes you on a creative journey with the ease of having written text and pictures to lead the way. Kat has the unique ability to put technical information in easy to understand terms with real life examples so we can easily apply the information to our own images. Before you know it…you’ll be inspired by the content of this book and you’ll begin calling yourself an artist!

This book is for anyone who uses an iPad, even if you don’t use an iPhone. I transfer my images from my android phone to the iPad using Photo Transfer App. I have been doing digital manipulation of my images on an iPad for some time, but I think I had gotten in a rut. The second half of this book, where the author goes indepth on using blending modes, layering, and recombining images really opened my eyes. I have wasted so much time trying to extract trees from their backgrounds, when using blending modes solves the problem.

This book was recommended at an iPhone photo class at the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, south of Tallahassee FL! It's absolutely amazing what one can do with an iPhone! It's a great how-to guide and reference for all ages…

Was able to read book on kindle/iPad and download apps as they were recommended and experiment with suggestions. Being able to instantly apply / experience the techniques that were talked about. Kay breaks down the complicated to a doable learning lessons.

This is without a doubt the best book on this subject I have ever read. It has opened up a whole new world of iPhone photography for me in its clear concise suggestions and explanations. My iPhone has become my very best friend thanks to this author and at a time when my photography was becoming stale and uninspiring.

This book gives me so many ideas on what I can do with my land. I don't have much of it, but I know that I can certainly do something with it. This book helps you with raising chickens, building hutches, recipes you can use from your harvest. I know that once we get our homesteading project really working, this book and its ideas will come in extremely handy.

Like other books I have purchased, this book was packed with information that was easy to understand and well written out. There is a Plethora of information for anyone who is looking to start thier own country style living or going off grid. To me this book is a must have for anyone looking to start any type of back to the basics of off grid living. A must for any preppers library.

Great book with diverse knowledge. Good reference for the experienced and great starting place for beginners. The kindle conversion could have been better as a lot of the graphics and diagrams are cut or too small but for the price it is still totally worth it.

This book has a lot of information, with wonderful suggestions as to how to layout a property, descriptions and drawings of animal pens and detailed information as to how much work a homestead with lots of animals really is. I thought it was great.

We are looking to purchase a home with land, and we want to gather as much knowledge as possible to use the land for our family, home and health. This book is simple to read and has much information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics.

It is imperative the we get back to working small plots of land for ourselves and maintain a positive stewardship of that land. You would be absolutely amazed at how little you can live on, and how much your level of happiness expands when you do so.

I purchased this book hoping to get an overview on some topics. What I got instead was a wealth of information. The author obviously has first-hand knowledge of the subjects in this book. I have not managed to read very far into it yet, as there is a lot of information and I am currently unable to devote time to sit and read very often. I have however, flipped through the chapters and read a bit of each of them and have been quite impressed with all I've found in it.Since we have purchased land and are now planning our home and garden, I can see myself referring to this book constantly.

I really enjoyed reading this book. A wealth of information. I now understand what my grandfather was trying to teach me when I asked him how to build a stone wall. A definite keeper for me.
