Love this book! The moment it arrived I sat down and read it cover to cover. Such a breath of fresh air! She shows you a variety of different links (30 links?) and then offers some projects but I love that this isn't just another "take me by the hand and make this project book". I've truly enjoyed her ingenious ideas and her detailed descriptions of how to complete each piece. The book is full of beautiful descriptive pictures that display her craftsmanship and steps for each piece and project. She really encourages the reader to use their own inspiration and create their own unique links. Cindy Wimmer I would LOVE to see you write another book! 💗 I'll be 1st in line to buy a copy!

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. It is BY FAR the best wire jewelry "how to" book I have seen to date and I have many books. All of the 30 links are great and I can think of many, many ways to incorporate them in designs. In addition there are 15 projects using the links taught.Can't wait to start making them. This looks like a very useful book. Hopefully, the author is working on another book!Unfortunately, due to space limitations, important steps/pictures are not there.I'm referring to Step 8 (page 57), Birthday Bow. Step 8 REALLY needs a picture of the back of the link. When trying to wrap the wire, the wire broke.Because of this problem, I discovered a much easier and quicker way to make these cute links.Working off the spool of 16 gauge wire, I made a coil. Then using Wubbers (large/large diameter), I made the 8 link. Cut the wire, bend the coil over the 8 link. You can make these links very quickly. Once you start doing it, it will make sense! A minor adjustment might be needed when bending the coil over the link.Good luck!MESSAGE TO CINDY WIMMER!I don't know when I've had so much fun making links!Thank you!On page 8 of your book, there looks like a large number of different links.How about a book of some of those?Thanks!UPDATE:Some links are great, some are almost impossible to make, because of missing information. This book is another example of over-editing, that eliminated necessary pictures. Because of this, I've changed my rating to 3 stars.The links look nice, but better instructions and more pictures, would make the links possible.Important instructions and pictures, seem to be missing from most published jewelry books.If you make any of the links, and they don't work as planned, be creative and turn them into something useful!

Great book with wonderful step by step instructions. Shows how to create 30 different wire links which are more elaborate than the basics shown in most books. You can see several of these on the cover photo. They are made with a high quality of workmanship. This made the book a must have for me, because just by looking at them, it was not readily apparent how to make them. But once learning how, it opens up a world of creative options. In addition to this, the book also includes comprehensive info about wire, patinas, tools, etc. It is a very complete handbook for both beginners and the much more experienced.

I've been creating jewelry for many years. I've been fortunate to have been in juried mixed media and jewelry only exhibits. I've had a long learning curve since there are so many aspects to explore. I wish I could had this long ago. The only additional information I would stress is use dead soft metals as they've will harden as you work with them. Copper is a good practice/learning material. The instructions are well written and the photos are very helpful. Her designs are gorgeous. The inclusions of other artists let you see the scope of the links taught. This is the best book for wirework I have and I have way too many books on the subject as this type of work has been the most challenging personally. Thank you Cindy

I have lots of jewellry books and most have a few things I really like. My personal pet peeve is when ALL the steps are not included in confusing steps and especially when the pictures do not add illustration value.This Book?? Problem Solved! I have been able to make every link featured because she has all the steps and has pictures that illustrate how the tricky parts are done. Let's face it, it takes a huge amount if sincere generosity to have someone share so much, with all the details and even some design ideas. This book is the Go-To book for me. A winner. I don't know the author, but would like to as I suspect that she would be as open and honest in person as she has been in this book!

As soon as this book came to my door, I grabbed my coffee and sat down to read it cover to cover. First off, it has beautiful photos. Everything is easy to see with no shadows hiding the finished work. I found myself doing the 'oooohhhs and aaahhhs' several times as I turned the pages. Next, the instructions are detailed. You won't be left saying, "huh?' when trying the projects yourself. Easy to follow, with instructions on what tools to use, and just a few pages to cover the basics in wireworking. Each project is rated for it's difficulty level. And finally, the links themselves! Wow! I love everyone of them! Nothing here that you have seen in a dozen other books. Fresh and unique. Just fabulous! Every link will inspire you to expand on the authors' work to create your own links. I've worked in metals for quite some time, but just have ventured into making chains. This book has inspired me to the point that I must go now. My tools and wire are calling to me......:)

I preordered this brand new edition to get it on the release day, and it does indeed feel current with sidebars on Brexit and even a few mentions of the Prince Harry and Meghan nuptials (which just happened hours ago, as I type this review). I've been a fan of Rick Steves's PBS shows since my early teens, so over twenty years now, and this is my first book of his that I have read. It's easy to hear the advice in his voice--indeed, I recognized some of the passages as paraphrased (or vice versa) from his shows.This book is over a thousand pages and the details are vast. I haven't gotten to put any of this advice into practice--I am toying with the idea of a dream trip next year--but I love how this book addresses everything from how to get around London or between cities, to when big monuments are crowded or empty, to where to eat and sleep for the night. Great Britain is broken down into regions with overviews and then more detailed sections, making it easy to skim for info then delve deeper. The very back of the book is loaded with fantastic advice on everything from currency (when to exchange it, how much to carry), what to pack, how to understand the different wording on hotel and B&B listings, etc. If my dream trip does become reality, this book will be my travel companion! And if the trip doesn't happen, it was still great fun to read and engage in many wistful what-ifs.

I've had dozens of Rick Steves guidebooks over the years - Italy, Spain, France, etc. - but this one is disappointing doesn't include some of the places that I'm planning on visiting this trip - such as Malvern, Shropshire, Dorset.

Very helpful. I wish it covered more about Scotland. England is covered very well. Scotland, not so much.

I used this book almost exclusively for a recent trip to the United Kingdom. Great information that I deemed so important I used this book and carried it with me every single day of my trip. When I went to Ireland I used the Rick Steve's guide as well. The publisher needs to upgrade the paper used for this book as the newspaper-like pages are so thin my highlighter showed through. The Ireland book had nice paper with color photos that didn't have this problem. In short, the author's information was fabulous but the paper stinks.

If you can't travel on a Rick Steves tour, this is the next best thing! From places to stay, to restaurants and attractions, Rick gives you all the info you need for a fun trip. He even gives you info about the best way to buy tickets, and describes attractions in detail so you can decide which to see and which to skip if you are only in a place for a short while. I can't imagine traveling without one of his guide books!

I checked this book out at my local library to make notes and read up on things to do in GB but ended up buying it because it was so worth it. Rick Steves references are wonderful! reading up on things really helped plan my 5 week UK holiday. Maps in the back of all the major cities were perfect. The book is durable, easy and enjoyable to read. Sadly once I got to the UK I ditched the book and just wondered around. But for pre-Great Britain planning its a must have!

This was purchased as a gift for a friend that is planning a trip to Scotland and Ireland in Sept. 2019. This will prove to be an invaluable guide to find the best places to stay and sight-see. Rick's books are very comprehensive and really get you behind the scenes of any location. Beautifully printed with photos, guides, maps and tons of details.

You cannot go wrong with Rick Steves travel resources. We have used and greatly benefited from his travel guides on multiply occasions. We have used his travel books for Germany, France, England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, and Switzerland. Book was in excellent condition and shipping was fast.Bought this book a while back to add to my personal library and completely enjoyed reading the book as well as working all the problems/calculations that came in the study manual (workbook) that can be purchased seperately.While the book may not be for everyone I completely enjoyed reading the book and working all the calculations. Would recommend the book to others who enjoy reading financial textbooks such as I do. However I would not encourage someone to read it unless they already have a solid understanding of finance otherwise it may be beyond the scope of their comprehension.Note: This book was purchased for hobby reading since my academic and professional background is finance, however I am not a CFA or plan on sitting for the CFA Exam.

It was required for my MSF course. It is very beneficial but I don't like that there are no subtitles at the book and it doesn't appear at the content. The only titles are appear are the chapters only otherwise it is helpful.

Typical financial textbook. Much like its other CFA institute cousins its simple and easy to read but full of more information than you will ever cover in any class.

Beware, the book has around 40 (!) authors, besides somewhat misleading cover statement about four persons (they are only editors). As a result the text is not consistent and uniform, although it has well-written parts like chapter 5 on asset allocation, which is co-authored by William Sharpe. Overall it is useful reference text if you already have enough knowledge of portfolio management process, but not something you will like to read in consecutive order.

Great book from CFA...A must-read book!

This book reminds me of the official reading for my CFA 1, 2 - long, repetitive and lacking focus. At the beginning of every section it repeats important points from the previous sections. Useful materials are put near the end of each section and can be easy to miss. There are too many words on simple concept and not enough examples on how to apply the ideas in real world scenarios.The book shies away from rigorous proof and neat formulae. Instead, long wordy formulae are employed to explain a concept that ought to be familiar with the target audience.I don't doubt the quality of the content but they can be better presented in about 300 pages instead of the 800.

This is an odd book to review. It is an excellent window into the mind of Richard Burton because it is his thoughts on one of his favorite subjects. The book is a history of swords from the dawn of time to the late 19th century. That's a tall order and in his usual way, Burton tackles it head on with digressions and footnotes. Anyone familiar with his translation of 10001 Night's will understand.The material itself is an odd lot, covering everything from the swords of Ancient Egypt to Central Africa to the Middle East to India to China to Rome to ...One thing that must be born in mind is that it is a book of its time. At that time, Diffusionism was the height of Sociology and the Burton viewed all cultures as being derived from Egypt. The civilization of the Indus had not been found and Mesopotamian archeology was in its infancy. But it is surprising to read what was known at the time.One final comment: If you are put off by the Politically Incorrect, this is not the book for you. Burton is from his time and not ours. For the 19th century, he is liberal. By today's standards, he is racist. Read this as a window to that time and not to ours.

This was... not quite at all what I was expecting. Be advised, this book is seriously heavy reading. If you are comfortable with your abilities in Greek and Latin, you'll be right at home. I didn't investigate enough before purchasing, or I'd have noted that this book was written and published in 1884.There is no way I could adequately review this book better than a previous reviewer, Miroku Nemeth. My three star review is an attempt to give a neutral rating - I didn't love it, and I didn't hate it. I just discovered that it was not the book for me.

I purchased this book quite awhile ago...it was hard to find then, but a friend was interested in it so I was happy to find it was available again. If you are interested in or collect swords and are also interested in the history of swords, this is the best book you will find. Excellent. Originally written in 1853 it is very readable and an amazing reference to all sword types. You'll only need this one book if you want the real history about swords and not some new age guesses.I collect swords and it has been invaluable.

I did my thesis for my second MA in English Lit. on Burton (over a decade ago), so, in many ways, I appreciate his writing--which is, well, very erudite, opinionated, and often pedantic in the extreme. This is not a straightforward narrative, a comprehensive text on swords or swordsmanship, or quite like anything you ever have read before if you are not used to Burton’s truly “unique” style. It is claimed that Burton knew 29 languages, and this is probably true. He was an amazing linguist and real scholar, among his many other talents and adventures. It is hard to say you have fully “read” this book unless you have a working knowledge of Latin, Greek, French, Chinese, Sanskrit, Urdu, Arabic (I can claim this with Arabic at least), Farsi, and sundry other languages that he leaves in the original script and untranslated. I have read many of Burton’s books, and had put off reading this for years because it looked very ponderous and convoluted as a text. And it is. I had a bit of hope that it would be interesting nonetheless once you unlock all of that a bit, as he was one of the greatest swordsmen of Europe and this is a topic close to his heart. As Rice writes in his important biography on Burton, “His mastery of the sword became legendary not only among the English but also among the French…..”If Burton's pedantry (or erudition--but it isn't easy reading either way) doesn't break you, there is a lot to learn in this book, though I am more concerned with the use of weapons than their historical metallurgical composition. Learned and pedantic in the extreme, Burton is most interesting when he actually talks about weapons and their usage, which is a relatively small portion of the book. He very much favors European swordmaking over Japanese, etc., and I find this refreshing, considering how Europeans and Americans lost the knowledge of their own martial arts and let Asian martial arts styles dominate their consciousness. This said, Burton is very thorough in his exploration of the swords of other cultures around the globe, and weighs the relative merits of the weapons objectively. In fact, chapter VIII "The Sword in Ancient Egypt and in Modern Africa" attributes the earliest origins of man, the alphabet, literature, the law, art, science, civilization, and the sword, not to Asia, much less Greece, but to Egypt and the Egyptians, when asserts "the ancient Egyptians were Africans, and pure Africans...." (144). Honestly, this chapter sounds absolutely "Afro-centrist" in many ways, which is something no one would ever accuse Burton of being. He also conceives of a much larger "Misr" than is normally thought--extending more broadly and deeply across Africa and to the sources of the Nile.Burton reasonably questions many narratives of history from the Greeks, who he calls "by virtue of her mighty intellect and her prepondering imagination, 'Graecia mendax.'" He blames these mendacious Greeks for many a lie that still stand in popularity today, such the Persians being led en masse by Xerxes himself to fight against them. "But the life of Hellas is one great "appropriation clause": the Greeks were doughty claimants, childish in their naivete of conceit; they were burglars of others' wits (convey, the wise it call), and they made themselves do all things."Once you have finished with metallurgy, etc. and start discussing the sword proper (in chapter 7), and especially in his chapter on the Egyptian origin of the sword and, well, almost anything, it becomes very interesting. By the way, he remarks again and again on the efficacy of the stabbing sword over the cutting blade--something to ponder. This book is so poorly digitized that it is unreadable. Transposed sentences, paragraphs, and words make it impossible to follow. So do not buy this digitized version from Amazon.

An excellent reference work, dated but a very interesting read. I had lost my old copy during a move, so am happy to replace it. Came in new condition. I like the author's style of writing, decidedly "old school". Lots of drawings of the blades discussed. A must have for bladed weapon enthusiasts.

This book is really interesting, it has a lot of Treasure Trove not to mention just illustrations and I barely have scratch the surface on it yet
