We bought this book for our 23 year daughter who's a huge fan of Strangers With Candy. We all laughed 'till the milk came out of our noses.

The pictures make me want to vomit but I think that was kind of the point. They're like those old-school ladies home magazine photos, when people did way too much baking with gelatin and tuna. I absolutely love the work of both David and Amy Sedaris. I was expecting this to be more of a "reading" book, and it's more of a flip-thru satirical home-making book, which is fine by me. Great coffee table piece!

Amy Sedaris makes me laugh out loud on every page! Buried in her zany advice on planning, launching, and closing down a party, is some really good practical advice on cooking and entertaining. Crafty and kitschy illustrations and pictures are delightful, fun, and can be mimicked. I especially liked her etiquette advice on inappropriate introductions for example: “This is Barbara, she can’t have children.” Etiquette faux pas that I’ve actually thought to myself, even witnessed someone else carry out, and Sedaris captures our own mischievous thoughts with great hilarity.

Is this book supposed to be funny or serious? I honestly cannot tell. My guess is that it was intended to be funny, but the humor is so weak that I am scratching my head trying to decide. No Ruby Ann Boxcar, that`s for sure.

But on a serious note, when talking about grieving and funerals, I was not previously aware that you should ask a friend or neighbor to house-sit while at the funeral as some robbers will watch the obituaries and try to break-in while everyone is at the funeral. I mentioned this fact to my sister-in-law, who knew about this fact and has done some house-sitting for friends who were at a funeral. I was amazed that I didn't know this common fact and very thankful to have read it in this book!Format: Filled with pictures, drawings, recipes, notes, tips, explanations, and real ideas for entertaining situations.Readability: Fun and easy to read!Overall: This is such a fun and entertaining, not to mention really helpful book! You won't be able to read through this book without cracking a smile! I think it is a must for every kitchen, and a really great hostess gift for a woman with a good sense of humor.

This book is hilarious and insanely useful. The pictures, the Doodles on the side, and the little notes seriously make me laugh super hard. Aside from that, there are tons of useful tips and a little tidbits on etiquette that I never really thought about. I now know how to throw a party!

I wanted to wait a while before writing a review for this wonderful book. I read it cover-to-cover after receiving my copy from Amazon. I wanted to make sure it's as fantabulous as it seemed on first read.As a lifestyle book, the hints are sometimes cheeky-snarky and sometimes serious and practical. As a humor book, Sedaris hits the mark just about every time. Visually, the layout is great and the art is varied and fun (I can't decide which I prefer: the photos or the illustrations). You can read the book repeatedly and still catch new things each time.For me, this book has worked best as a cookbook. I've tried several of the recipes and only had one that didn't turn out (the Swiss cheese puffs). The cheeseballs have been especially wonderful. I have learned a lot from the tips and tricks and have relaxed about cooking. The 15 minute meals in 20 minutes section seems silly at first glance but provides some groundwork for basic cooking that I think even seasoned cooks can use.What I learned from the book was about relaxing, whether in terms of cooking, entertaining or just life in general. I was never an uptight cook or baker but I often felt that entertaining was a lot of pressure. My teachers ranged from my mother to Martha Stewart, neither of whom would suggest a sombrero with a brimful of chips = Fiesta Night. This book has given me confidence in entertaining and cooking. Who knew that you could make "fruit salad" with a can of fruit cocktail and a little Cool Whip?I don't know how there could be any kind of follow-up book, since this one is so jam-packed, but I hope there is. Only complaint: Not all the pages were numbered (what's that about?) but that problem was easily solved with a mini-Sharpie. It's not even worth docking a star.

I've been reading this book to refresh my memory on digital signal processing. It is a good book, lots of theory in there, however it is a bit dry in its explanations, there are a lot of results (for example the value of a certain number series) that just are presented out of the blue while the reader scratches his head trying to come up with the missing steps. It starts from scratch but its not a freshman's book, I would say senior to graduate level. Overall its a good book, and you cant beat the price of the International Edition.

Our son needed this book for his Electrical Engineering program, which he finished, with a solid 4.0 GPA! Now he is debating his Phd in EE or to go on to Medical school. Thanks for a great price and quick shipping of this book.

Great explanation for every fundamental concepts. For instance, authors give a deep introduction about the background and purpose of Fourier Series and transform in Ch 4. The book demonstrates great details of Fourier Transform by constructing from mathematic components to a whole picture of Fourier Transform.This textbook explains almost everything and provides much more details than the current textbook I am using in UCLA. I guess this textbook also much better than most textbooks, since most textbooks don't even bother to cover the real fundamental concepts.However, as I reading along ch.4, there are many typo, but they all format problems so far. Ex. superscript, "x2" = x*x. integration from nothing to w, because it's lower limit become part of integral value.But still, this is a great book without a doubt!!!

While very easy to read and understand, the material covered is presented with sufficient depth. Practical examples and applications of material presented throughout the entire work.

This is a really well written and organized book. The development of the material follows a logical succession of topics, which makes this book a fantastic source to learn the subject from, and also a good reference for those that already know the subject matter. The reason for only 4/5 stars is mostly due to the poor coverage of terms in the index, which makes it hard to find where a particular concept is first introduced and defined. This is likely more of a problem for a DSP novice like me in trying to use the book as a reference. There are also numerous typographical errors in cross references and formulas in problem definitions, which I would have expected to be corrected by the 4th edition.

The book gives a great explanation of the concepts, and provides lots of details and examples. I am using this book for a graduate course and it is really easy to read. My book came well packaged and is almost like new.

Most of the book is OK, but there are printing/binding errors on pages 80-90.I would not have bought this textbook anyway if it weren't required for a class, so I cannot comment on the pros/cons of this book as compared to other DSP books.

The reader is better to have some background on DSP, such as Signal Processing First by McClellan, prior to study this book. This book provides more theories, examples and much more problem assignments which won't exist in elementary DSP books. Fortunately, one could find a problem solution guide in.pdf format. I applied the MathCAD 14.0 to solve the problem assignments and found a couple of typing errors in the solution guide. I also worked on some examples and the following work proved the "typing error" I found recently:For example, Example 9.3.1 (pg.594): I found two "typing errors" in nominators of recombining pairs of poles in H(z). The first numerator should be "-14.747+12.893z^-1" and the second numerator should be "24.708+2.343z^-1" rather than "-14.75-12.90z^-1" and "24.50+26.82z^-1". Hence, the A1, A2, A3 and A3* are correct--after verifying with MathCAD 14.0. I simply applied the "invztrans" function to transform the H(z) equation to corresponding h(n) counterpart, applies the plots of pole-zero, Impulse Response, and/or Frequency Response. The plots of Impulse Response of h(n) verified my correction.The solution manual is a great helper on assisting me to work on more problem assignments with confidence--It's the reason why I decided to purchase this textbook rather than other advance DSP books.I strongly recommend this textbook to those readers plan to learn more on studying the DSP technology.

This is an outstanding work of literary criticism. Each chapter is organized around a work of literature beginning with Homer and concluding with Virginia Woolf. The author typically quotes a short passage in its original language, a translation follows, then a close analysis of the language, and then a discussion of the historical milieu that gave rise to the work. The author proceeds slowly and carefully with precise and nuanced readings of the texts and deep insight into the world that gave birth to the text. But the book is not easy. Many of the texts analyzed will be obscure even to educated readers. Historical contexts will often be similarly obscure. Although foreign language texts are translated the translations often do not include material outside of the text.-- so unless you can read most of the European languages, Latin, medieval French, much will be lost. Not surprisingly the most accessible chapters are the first (Homer and the Old Testament) and the last (Virginia Woolf) which are not presented as translations Liberal arts education has changed radically since this book was first published (in German) over sixty years ago. Because there are very few modern readers who will have a similar level of erudition as Auerbach it would be helpful for the book to be reissued with appropriate footnotes.

One of my all-time favorite books--read it first over 50 years ago and had worn out my copy. Thrilled to find on Kindle. Worth it for the discussion of Odysseus' return to Ithaca alone--but the whole book is thought-provoking and illuminating. Dante, Cervantes, and morel Wonderful translation--reads like a dream

Little hard to get anywhere in this-maybe its a little dated, maybe this guy's to smart for me, maybe its other things. I'll stick to Bloom and his kind.

This is a classic. The first chapter on the Iliad is worth the price of the book.

Everyone interested in narrative literature, professional or not, needs to read this book to learn to appreciate the composition of a literary text. One nice thing about it is that I can read any section without worrying too much about what comes before or after. This is a true classic in the sense that I can read its chapters over and over again, and each time come across new observations that add to my enjoyment of the text under discussion.

I wish this book was published in two or three volumes. But I really enjoy reading and rereading this book. I will have to look for an annotated version. The book is too bulky to haul around that is why I would like to see it in volumes. And I'd like to have wider margins to write notes. I have used the way Auerbach has looked at literature and used some of his ideas to look at modern books and drama.

Read it every five or ten years.

I first read this work as an undergraduate over 50 years ago in a European classics lit. course. It was then mostly incomprehensible to me. Now older, and perhaps a little wiser, I nevertheless still found the book to be a tough read. Auerbach's general thesis about the relationship between various literary texts and the representation of reality was now much clearer, but many details remained hidden from me due to my lack of Latin, old French, etc. I also found some of Auerbach's interpretations to be highly speculative. Still, the effort was worthwhile and Said's introductory essay is excellent.
