Unable to obtain a teaching post, she decides to take a job in a household as a serving-girl. She is aware of the social distinctions prevalent in her town, and she works to bring about change. As a Christian, she begins to study the Bible's teaching on the subject of service and the relationship between master and servant.The book also contains a sweet love story.In spite of the changes in society over the last 100 years, I believe this book delivers a timeless and necessary message.I highly recommend this book.
I didn't know that Charles M. Sheldon wrote a novel. It was a very interesting story, combating the idea of service as being despised and relegating one to the lower classes. I didn't realize that people in nineteenth century America were so class conscious. I thought that went out when our ancestors left the "old country."
Just finished reading this book, and it is such a wonderful read. I love christian romance and it had christian virtues throughout the book. Very much what i needed to have read. Very good book.
As I read this book, I was given a real look at the differences between the social classes during that time period from the view point of the hired servants and not the aristocracy. This story was written with the most basic Christian values in mind - service to mankind according to the life and teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reading this book made me consider how it applies to all workers today. We may not have the same class distinctions of 100+ years ago but we all serve someone....in our jobs or our homes.
I only gave it one star because I had to give a star to give my review. We returned it without being able to complete it. It was a photo copied book with incomplete margins (top, bottom, and sides). It was a Christmas gift for my husband, and he tried to read it to me a couple days after Christmas. We were both extremely disappointed.
A very inspirational book and enjoyed reading to the end. If only people could remember why we are here to Serve.
I found myself almost in tears at the end of a sweet Christian journey with obstacles galore for the path chosen by Barbara.
