This book is the war as viewed by the Russian soldier. If you are looking for a sniper story like that of USMC Carlos Hathcock, this is not the book. The sniping is more an afterthought. I recommend this book. You will understand why Russia hated the Germans so much. It was lclear that the soldiers were internally motivated to drive the Germans out of Leningrad. The German Army brought horrific hardship on the civilians. Amazing stories of death and suffering. However, the closeness of toughened soldiers and their care for each other and the civilians comes through the story. The caring for you friend, male or female, could end in a moment by a German sniper bullet. Nonetheless, when their officers called to attack, there was no hestitation. It was all about driving the Germans from mother Russia.
Red Sniper on the Eastern Front is OK, but not quit what I expected. After reading Sniper on the Eastern Front -The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, which was superbly written about a German sniper in World War II, I had high hopes for this Red Sniper on the Eastern Front. To put it simply, this book left a little to be desired after reading the ladder. However, I will say it had interesting aspects and another point of view. It seemed to lack the plethora of details that the Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger provided. I managed to complete reading the book, however I have not had any desire to go back and re-read it as I have the Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, several times. I have a feeling the author capitalized on the name from the popularity of Alleberger's book.
Nice recounting of the victories and tragedies of the resistance to Operation Barbarossa at Stalingrad. The author summons imagery and context to his memoir in a way that most sniper tales do not. Critics of his writing must remember that this is a translation from Russian, and is occasionally too literal. It does end abruptly, as though the author died of heart failure before the final chapter. But a satisfying read nevertheless.
Easily one of the best WW2 books I've had the privilege to read. Admittedly I measure these books less for grammar than the stories and details of battle, though this book was pretty solid. I only wish it had not ended so abruptly, and that we could have discovered the rest of the painful, yet triumphant story. Great information about the life of the Red Army soldiers and the Russian people. These people were likely more warm and caring towards their Comrades than we give credit for, though they lived a brutal existence with the cold climate and poor conditions. Having read a number of both German and Russian books, they each point the finger at horrific atrocities committed by the other. War is well, and maybe both dictators should have planned to stay home and not gone to war. That wasn't in the script, but as a result we have these stories from real survivors. And what stories they are.
Yosef Pilyushin is a remarkable man with an unforgettable story. He bares his soul in this fascinating book - a memorable journey through years of brutal combat in unforgiving conditions facing a relentless foe, all the while highlighting every emotion - from ecstatic joy to gut wrenching grief. I have read many war time memoirs - but this is one of the few that definitely stands out.In some ways, his story is truly inspiring - to go through all he did: combat, unthinkable personal tragedies, witnessing suffering on a mass scale in a blockaded, starving city which counted it's toll in the millions, enduring harsh privations on a regular basis; all the while living with the constant fear of death at a moments notice...... to endure all that and still survive!The book is filled with colourful characters! And the writing style pulls you in - you start identifying the characters when they are mentioned again later in the book. I shared in their joys and grieved over their losses.That's the other amazing quality of this work - the very personal touch. Mr. Pilyushin certainly lost loved ones in that terrible war. Not just his personal family, but many members of his 'frontline family' as well. The book is so engrossing that you identify closely with those fellow veterans - to the point that you can feel the grief and pain he goes through with each devastating loss.One other interesting aspect of this book is that it is nigh-completely devoid of "Party Propaganda." There are no paeans to the Communist Party or hero worship of Stalin or STAVKA. Yes, the enemy is mostly "fascists" and often "Germans" - but given the circumstances, it doesn't seem inappropriate. No, the tone of the book is very personal and it ties into the relationship with the civilian population as well.My one gripe is that I thought the ending was a little abrupt and unsatisfactory. I would've liked to know what Mr. Pilyushin is up to these days, or how he fared post-war or how he passed away etc.This book is one for the archives. It deserves to be re-read.
Gripping, heartbreaking story about one man's personal tragedies amidst all the greater horror that occurred during the 900-day siege. Yosef was an older man when the war started and he penned his memoirs more than a decade after the close of hostilities, so his perspective about the relationships around him are more mature than many of the "trench stories" by 19-year-olds. It does cover much of his day-to-day experiences and has plenty of combat in it. However, what sets this apart is the subplot of his platonic love for a female sniper. Their relationship is downright Shakespearean.I almost gave this 4 stars because the book ends abruptly with many unanswered questions, but it's told so well, with so much life that I had to give it 5.
It is a very strong account of a brutal fight in the 3 year siege of Leningrad. The author survives awful woulds & trauma defending his city and sees the turn of the tide and the offensive gained by the Soviet Union in 1944.
