As complete a guide as possible on a very knew grape growing. Has much information on a little known topic.

The second edition is a huge step forward. There has been a tremendous amount of progress since the first edition (2002) in wine grape growing in the colder regions of the United States and into Canada. Tasting Minnesota wines I've seen real progress even in the last couple of years. There really can be good wines, not just novelty wines, produced in the colder climates of the upper Midwest, New England, and into Ontario Province.The winemaking has also changed and improved, though not as dramatically as the viticulture. There's some information of yeasts and methods particular to colder climates.Overall an excellent book, with a major (2009) update. Recommended for anyone interested in wines from colder climates than the Yakima Valley.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is full of information on how to deal with those cold winters. Although I'm located a bit further south, this book gives excellent details for the varieties showcased. Great details for winemaking of each of the specific varieties, and very informative. They provide an honest evaluation of the wines, to keep your expections realistic. This will come in very handy when deciding to blend or make a varietal. With dedicated growers like Tom and Bob, everyone can benifit from thier work for years to come. Keep it up!

I had the opportunity to read Walter Mosley's novel "Devil in a Blue Dress" (1990) when it was presented as part of a Black Voices reading group at the local public library. It was my first experience with the author. Mosley (b. 1952) is best-known for his series of noir mysteries featuring a tough African American detective named Easy (Exekiel) Rawlins. Although I have some familiarity with noir, this book was also the first I have read with an African American protagonist and a predominantly African American setting. "Devil in a Blue Dress" was the Mosley's first novel. In 1995, it became a movie starring Denzil Washington.The story is set in the Watts area of Los Angeles in 1948. The hero, Easy Rawlins, immigrated to Los Angeles from an even rougher area in Houston. He saw extensive combat experience in WW II where he was fearsome in hand-to-hand combat and killed many German soldiers. Rawlins wants a peaceful, successful life. He completes his high school education and contemplates college. He gets a good job as a machinist in an aircraft production plant and saves enough money to buy a small house with a garden which he loves. Due to an altercation with his boss, Rawlins is fired and fears he will not be able to meet his monthly mortgage payment.In his leisure time, Rawlins drinks at a small out-of-the way bar owned by an ex-boxer, Joppy. Joppy introduces Rawlins to a white man, DeWitt Albright of questionable business and connections. Albright offers to pay Rawlins for information about the location of a young white woman, Daphne Monet, who is known to frequent African American establishments in the Watts area.With misgivings, Rawlins accepts the job and gradually realizes the trouble he has brought on himself. Finding Daphne brings Rawlins into a complex picture of murders, double-crosses and mysteries. Along the way, Rawlins is arrested and beaten by the Los Angeles police and nearly loses his life at the hands of several competing parties with their own reasons for finding Daphne. Several of Rawlins' friends are killed. In the process of the tale, Rawlins introduces a welter of sinister yet fascinating characters including Rawlins' violent friend "Mouse", Albright, and Daphne herself. The plot is tangled.Character development and atmospheric portrayal of late 1940's Los Angeles are much more important to this book than plot development. The book offers a grittily realistic portrayal of African American life in the Watts of its time as the scene shifts among several bars, romming houses, brothels, liquor stores. Much of the story shows the nature of African American -- white relationships as Rawlins is harassed by the police, fired from his job, and thwarted in his efforts. Rawlins and Albright are in a way complimentary characters. Daphne is a pivotal figure in the racial tension developed in the novel.The book makes highly effective use of African American speech patterns. "Easy" Rawlins develops and gains trust in himself during the book. He calls upon his war experience and his toughness to stay with the situation and not run away after he finds himself in over his head. At critical points in the story, he listens to an internal "voice" which tells him what to do. A basically conscientous and decent man, Rawlins learns to hold his head high and to do what he needs to do in the situations that present themselves.The story is jambled but became relatively clear with close reading. The portrayal of Los Angeles life, the character development, and the observations about relationships between African Americans and whites, help bring this book to a level beyond noir fiction. I was glad of the opportunity to get to know this book.Robin Friedman

If you're like me, you vaguely remember the 1995 Denzel Washington movie, but your interest was piqued by mentions of the Rawlins character on the Netflix Luke Cage series. This is definitely a different type of detective novel, and Easy Rawlins is a unique take on the "private eye" character: an amateur, unlicensed, African-American, and avoiding the police. Author Moseley excels at dialogue and immersing the reader within the scene, and making even the unfamiliar (to me) worlds of black clubs and 1940s L.A. seem familiar. He creates intriguing characters; my personal favorite is Mouse, a short (and short-tempered) gangster and Easy's backup, the John Clark/Hawk/Chas to Easy's Jack Ryan/Spenser/John Constantine. Moseley also eschews the cliched "The dame walked in on two legs that spelled one word: trouble"-style prose, and instead focuses on Easy's keen observations, and the contrasts between his actions and thoughts (especially when it comes to Easy's interactions with white racists). So why only three stars? The plot was a bit of a mess. As in most detective stories, seemingly random and unrelated events occur, and a cast of characters is introduced, while the detective remains as in the dark as the reader and finally ties everything together in an explanatory scene at the end. The disparate elements of the mystery here never gel together quite properly (especially the explanations of who murdered who). All in all, though, it's a good read, and made me want to read the rest of the series. Suffice to say that, based on the way Daphne Monet (the title devil) is described and characterized, I'd be rushing to her rescue despite all common sense too.

I didn't want to put the book down. I came here from the movie; of course you can tell that from previous reviews of Easy Rawlins. And you always think that the book will be better than the movie. And it was and wasn't. Guess both were great. Initially, I thought I was reading the movie and then subtle differences presented themselves. Â Easy meets Albright at Joppyâ€™s bar. True. He's hired to find Daphne Monet. No difference there. Coretta James. Frank Green? That's where the subtle differences start. Frank Greenâ€™s name keeps coming up. I know why but the book weaves it much better. More detail. And then the Mouse shows up and you can tell that Easy loves the guy but really wants no parts of him. He's that friend you love but hate to have around. Gets you into trouble. The kind of trouble that's burdensome but entertaining. So it got to a point that I couldn't put the book down. Even though I essentially knew what was going to happen from the movie. The book just took it deeper.I loved the wit. The voice in Easy's head that he argues with is hilarious. Mouse answering the phone (you'll see) is hilarious. And then there are the themes that become the making of a great franchise. Easy is a black man in 50s LA, dealing with racism, sexism, oppression and depression. And he wants to lead a normal life. But how can you? How can any of us and attempt to rise above it all?On to book 2.

"An Army of Frogs" by Trevor Pryce,is a fascinating chapter book for children. I think children of all ages from very young ones to preteens would enjoy this book. In the realm of chapter books for young readers this book just might be King.Even on the digital edition the formatting is wonderful. The pages are colorful, each has a fancy chapter heading and the illustrations are top-notch. I can vouch for the fact that even children who are too young to read the story on their own, or fully appreciate the text, enjoy looking at pictures, they are vibrantly colored and there are a lot of them.As far as the story goes, there is a lot of action, excellent dialogue and enough humor to make you laugh out loud frequently. The characters are adorable and each one is unique. There have been a lot of books that feature frogs as a main character, but this is definitely one of the best in recent memory. The heroes are heroic and the villains are terrible! Just as an adventure story like this should have.This book is long enough to keep a bit more of an advanced reader happily entertained, but also simple enough for a new reader to accomplish mostly on their own. If you have children, grandchildren, or know someone who does, this would make an incredible gift.This review is based on a digital ARC from the publisher Amulet Books.

My 5th grader read this for his book report project. He loved the story and was enthusiastic to give his presentation. The vocabulary seemed appropriate for maybe a 4th grader to read on their own. It does have the same formula as many other books for this audience. A common wood frog (not Kulipari fighting frog w/ poison) wants to become a warrior frog, like his father. But he was born without the capacity to make poison. He has a friend/side kick that helps him train, a wise old turtle who advises him, and the nemesis. All key characters in the book help shape this common frog to help him achieve what he wants to be. Thereâ€™s enough adventure and action to keep the readers engaged. The illustrations are done quite well.

I got this to read to my 7 year old son. He liked it, but didn't really care to read it to himself as some of the bigger, or more confusing words held him up. He's smart and could pronounce them, he just paused a lot to ask what the different terms meant. I ended up reading most to him. He liked it enough that we got the second book.

Great series. My 12 yr old grandson devoured these books and decided this sort of fantasy is his favorite genre.

Grandson has read the first 2 books now. Loves them. The illustrations are beautiful.

I thought if was very good and had lots of detail. I loved the perspective of the frogs and what they live through. It was cool to see what was going on with the conflicts the characters faced. The war was a bit different than I thought it was but it still was pretty good...Well that's what I have to say...Nothing was bad or I didn't think they should change anything...So yeah...

Grandson loved reading this. He took it with him to the store and anywhere we went. Great read.

I ordered for my 7 year old. It is the biggest book so far that she has. We watched the show on netflix and loved it.

I purchased this book my 9 year old. He said it was little hard to get into at first. He really likes to read mysteries and action books. By 70% of the book he was enjoying it. I am giving it 4 stars because it took a while to really grab his attention but in the end you enjoyed it.

It also comes with a free gift and vip membership which makes it really nice.Like I have stated before and I want people to listen, option trading is not for the faint at heart, you can even lose more money than you put in on some of them if I am reading right. If you have some extra money and the time to research, then this is for you. I am thinking oil has to go up soon and is why I want to pursue this. The when oil goes up produce the like will go up to pay for the gas bills, although they do not take the price down when oil drops lol. We can not win, but with Options I may have a chance to get ahead of the game and win. It's not bad at all if you're just getting started into options. Its an easy read under 1.5 hours. Most of the info here can be found easily online but, I like to have the book near me when trading sometimes to reference some basic fundamentals to options. I would say this is worth your money if you're just wanting to get your feet wet and understand the basics to options. The visualizations on some of the trades could be done better. There are other books out there that contain all the info here and much more but, this is more of a quick summary on options. No advanced strategies are mentioned in the book.

The information in this book is well written and informative, but the charts are absolutely illegible. Options trading without chart views? Not a good plan.

I have read through this book and the thought that kept occurring to me was "how do I know what they are writing here is correct..." The reason for the thought is there are so many misspellings and other errors it is hard to believe what they are writing about...what is really most concerning is the fact that this book is the 2nd edition! The editors either didn't read the book or they were drunk when editing...

I doubt a beginner will be able to trade options just from reading this book, The book uses just as much jargon as any other book, the fact that the book is short gives them very little time to explain anything well,

A ton of information for beginner's and seasoned investors. This book explains options in a way that is easy to understand even for investors with no knowledge of options. I will use this book as a reference in the future.

Very basic book. I was a series 7 stockbroker for 21 years. The book reminded me of things I already knew but was not properly applying. It is a worth while primmer. A book that cost about $5 and has anything worth knowing about trading is stocks is a must.

The book is great but they ran out of INK when it came to printing their (so called) multiple colored charts (can even read them). I'd like a new book with readable charts (why so long writing---been busy).

I love her website and this is the sole reason I bought this book. Her recipes are amazing and if you love Japanese food you really need to use her website and this book. Like her bomb chicken Yakitori recipe isn't in this book, but is on her webpage. She also has some great videos on line on how to prepare Japanese foods. I had to youtube how to cut a Japanese pumpkin and once aga in she popped up!

This is a great source of simple yet authentic Japanese recipes. Well written and easy to use. I highly recommend this for Japanese home cooking.. Some of this information is available on the internet, but I believe in supporting the author and Namiko has clearly put a lot of thought and effort into this work.

Very easy, clear & accessible recipes for the western cook to get you started cooking Japanese food.

I have read several books by Janet MacLeod Trotter and never been disappointed! This particular book is so very, very good. The story is poignant, plot fresh, written by an author who has already proven herself over and over again. The book was impossible to put down as this author takes you into the world of a young mixed race woman, early 1900's from her late teens through her early 30's....... Clarrie is the eldest daughter of a tea plantation owner in India. Her father is a failing businessman, widow and aloholic dependent upon his elder daughter to keep the plantation afloat and raise her younger sister. Clarrie's entire world has surrounded helping others. The descriptions of life in India, and later in England, are vivid and colorful. I can honestly admit the book touched me strongly on an emotional level as I read all th he ups and downs of this courageous and very human woman in her loves, losses, and tribulations. I strongly recommend all readers if historical fiction, romance and women's books to read this wonderfully written book. It is interesting from a political aspect as well as the author takes us back to pre-WWI . I'm on to book II of the series as I do not wish to miss out on any of this heart rending, beautiful story. Bravo!

This story had so much potential but didn't take advantage of it. The main heroine is a combination of Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables but one that never grows up. She is downright irritating. This may be as close as I've ever come to dnf'ing a book.

Bought this book and loved it so much, I have since bought the other two in the series! I love reading about far away lands, cultures, foods and the author makes you feel like you are living in the moment. I have lost sleep reading this....Hubby has had to get up at midnight a few times, to see if I was coming to bed. LOL Great Reading!

Pretty insipid as romances go. The characters are predictable, sort of a Cinderella story, Mean step-cousin in law, son in law, the main characters get together in the last 100 words. sorry I wasted my time.

This book overpromised and underdelivered: very little of this book takes place in India (although the cover, title/series title, and synopsis may make you think otherwise), action is incredibly slow in places, and then there's a rushed ending that seems to have missed the mark of a proper narrative arc. I was expecting a version of PBS' Indian Summers with this book, but it was nothing like that in the least.

I loved this two series book and was so bummed that it has not kept going. I do keep watching to see if the story continues. I have a high stress career and read my kindle for enjoyment and to destress and relax. I really enjoyed this story and hope there is a future sequel for this character.

This book is about Miss Clarissa Belhaven and her sister Olive and the hardships they endured. It opens in India and later takes place in England. There's also a wonderful love story. I loved this book so much that I read it twice. I highly recommend it.

This is a captivating story set in India andEngland during wartime. It's the story oflove, jealousy, betrayals and struggles. Twosisters who struggle to live after losing theirparents in India. I loved this book, and willprobably read the entire series!!!

I won book four of this series on Goodreads.com. I of course wanted to read books one to three first so I bought them. I absolutely loved this book. Fantastic characters and set in England and India. Lots of history and learning about other cultures. Great characters you either grow to hate or love. Can't wait to read book two.

We all have heard of this battle as the big battle won after the War of 1812 was over. In the many books that I have read, all the stories basically stated that this battle as over very quickly and the Americans smashed the British. While Jackson and his army did smash the British, is was not quick nor guaranteed. If the British did succeed in taking New Orleans, the future of the US would have been quite different.This book went into this battle in fair, but not deep, detail. From the pirates under Lafitte, the Free Blacks, the French, the Creoles, the Cajuns, the Kentuckians, the Tennesseans, Choctaws and Cherokees, to the British side and all the heroes of the Peninsular War under Wellington. As with so many battles, a change here and change there could have had a very different outcome.To say that the US won the War of 1812, as taught in our schools, has always been laughable. What is undeniable is that the US did kick the British in the rear end in the Battle of New Orleans. This was a good book to understanding why. There were aspects lacking to this, which would have made it even better-what the outcome meant for the pirates, the plantations, the Free Blacks, the slaves, the British who switched sides. That aside, I greatly enjoyed it. As with other reviewers, I agree, another great one by Mr. Remini.

Robert Remini, a noted and prolific scholar on Andrew Jackson, has narrowed his focus to write a colorful and informative account of the Battle of New Orleans, the final battle in Britain's unsuccessful war of invasion of the United States, the "War of 1812". Most Americans' grasp of the battle boils down to a few factoids: Andy Jackson won, pirate Jean Lafitte helped, and the battle was fought after the treaty marking its end (the Treaty of Ghent) was signed, but before news of the treaty reached the new world. Remini's success is in providing a wonderful and interesting background for the events of the battle: the polyglot and stratified society of New Orleans; continued British designs in North America even after the American colonies won their independence; and most starkly, the stalwart, near fanatical patriotism of Andrew Jackson.The British campaigning is well recounted, from attacks at Mobile Bay to the laborious transfer of troops through the Louisiana bayous, to the final disastrous assaults on entrenched American lines. This book is informative without being overly-dense to a newcomer to the material. A must-read for Americans who've let the battle and its significance slip from the national consciousness. Remini does pay a bit of lip service to the British by doing some research on their commanders and setting them in the context of their career paths. He also wraps up by noting that the Battle of New Orleans was, for decades, seen as a defining coming-of-age moment for the young American republic, it launched Jackson to the White House and was the final and true declaration of independence for newly-empowered Americans.However, Remini's unabashed flag-waving and affection for his hero create some awkward passages. Time and again he gnashes teeth at British arrogance and nearly weeps at the ragtag nature of the American army, held together by the immense will of great Jackson. At times the book borders on hero worship and veers away from analytical political/military history. So that in the end, this is a readable and interesting history, but a flawed one. An informative ride to the gates of New Orleans, but one taken from the American side.

I'm currently researching the War of 1812 and this book has provided a clear and concise overview. It also has a great list of other primary and secondary sources.

I tend to agree with all the previous reviews of this book, both the good and the bad. That may sound a bit strange, as this is a well told historical account of the Battle for New Orleans. The book's narrative is fast and snappy, the story is well told and presented in a way that it reads like a novel. The author, Robert V. Remini certainly loves this period of history and has a deep respect for Andrew Jackson, which shows throughout the book, maybe too much so. One of the previous reviewers mentioned the fact that the story was a bit too much like "good versus evil".I found on occasions that the American forces could do no wrong while the British were blunderers. For example, the chapter `The Night Attack' shows Jackson throwing his troops, inferior in numbers and without full knowledge of the British forces in a spoiling attack against the advance guard of the British forces. Certainly the spoiling attack is a sound military move and paid good dividends in this instance. Jackson is shown as a daring commander however when the British forces do something very similar against the American positions they are made to sound like bumbling fools. Why is one commander a daring master and the other an idiot?On a similar note, when Jackson showed caution on a number of occasions throughout this battle he was commended but when the British leadership showed this same caution they were castigated. I agree with the author that the British leadership was ineffectual at times but that is making a judgement in hindsight. The author made mention of Jackson's burning hatred of the British and their contempt for the American forces, maybe a little of this has rubbed off on the author?Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book, it's a great story and my own country's history has no love of the British but I don't like it to show so one sided in any book I read. Beside that, the maps supplied (3) were of a high quality and a pleasant change but once again even the maps seemed to be one sided. The map showing the positions of the opposing forces for the attack on January 8, 1815 (page 135) show in great detail the American positions with the units indicated but nothing as detailed for the attacking British forces.Having said all that, it was pleasing to note that the author paid tribute to the brave soldiers on both sides of this terrible battle. Overall this is an excellent story, told with verve and passion and it's a great book to read. I hope that the remarks above do not offend anyone, they are not made with that intention. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and would like to learn about this turning point in America's history.

Excellent programming manual. Covers the software half of the Arduino very well, I've read it cover to cover! The hardware experiments are very basic but they do illustrate the software. Installation procedures for Arduino software were much appreciated. This book is very much for people unfamiliar with the Arduino but it covers everything up through shields and interrupts and multi-processor communication. Just find yourself a good book on how to build the mechanical parts of your project and you are good to go.

The book starts off very basic, like the stuff you could get from any web page on Arduino. It does move on into more interesting subject matter, including libraries, and how to complete certain tasks using Arduino code. There is a little insight into why there is more than one way to do something, but then the explanation why you would not do it that way, and he shows you a better way to do it. I would suggest this book to anyone who has very little to zero experience with Arduino, and wants more.

I buy a lot of stuff and I tend not to write reviews. This book was worth reviewing. I have some programming experience, but not C/C++. I'd had some dabbling with the Arduino, but mostly just copying someone else's code/sketches. I'd looked at a bunch of books, but I didn't want a recipe book, I wanted to understand how to do my own stuff.. This book did exactly that!! The book was able to teach me the C/C++ (aka- IDE programming language) I needed to know and how it applies to the Arduino. A great purchase.

I've always liked the Sams Teach Yourself Series of books. This one I bought for my teenage daughter who wanted to learn Arduino programming. She was a bit overwhelmed at first, but now tinkers with her UNO daily.

it is a good book but as for explanations i still prefere the book by simon monk which breaks everything down into simple to understand subjects where as this book does try to but not as easy to understand, i would recomend this book but not to complete beginers despite it does explain what an arduino is and does but as for first time learners the rest is harder to understand

Excellent book that shows all the main Arduino commands in a well organised manner. It is the only book I have found really useful as I learned the subtleties of the Arduino language, Rather than show "do this and that will happen" (as with many similar books I have read) it explains in depth the usage of the language. If you want to understand or modify existing sketches on your Arduino, this is the book you need. It is a pity about the title as it leads you to think this is a quick programming guide. It is not. It is a comprehensive in depth Arduino language sketch book.

As a 52 year old mechanical engineer, I recently started dabbling in the world of Arduino. After reviewing many books, I purchased this one. This is an excellent book that teaches the very basics of Arduino through more advanced code writing. I thought that I would be lost and soon get frustrated while trying to learn coding for Arduino. Just the opposite happened. This book clearly explains the commands and rules of Arduino programming while giving nice examples that help one learn. This is a must have book for newcomers to Arduino and the foundation of my new and growing library for my new Arduino hobby.

Very well written and easy to follow. Especially for a beginner. You get hands-on experience with writing programs and using the board.
