I bought this to kick off our "Read Around the Bases" program with our entire 2nd grade. Readers came from the Charleston Riverdogs (our minor league team & Yankees affiliate). This book had all 300 kids waiting for the next page. They LOVED it! It is a fun take on the game (but remind your kids not to ever wander off at a stadium) & is in the same style as "Night at the Museum." The kids & teachers all LOVED this book! Our minor league team loved it so much they kept it to read to other schools, so I'm ordering another copy for myself! Fun for all ages!

This is a really cute book about a boy lost at Yankee Stadium after a game. He encounters talking rakes, baseballs, sushi etc. it even includes Monument Park, Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter. While the book itself may not be "biographical" per say, the family is interracial just like Derek Jeter's, which I'm sure is no mistake. While the book isn't exactly cohesive, my daughter can't get enough of it and that's what matters to this Yankee fan!

We did not enjoy this book. We aren't Yankees fans but we are baseball fans and my kids ear up most baseball books. We read this a few times when it first arrived and now it's collecting dust. Maybe if your kids are Yankees fans it'd be more exciting.

The story line is a bit awkward because it seems to jump in the middle & the end as if there was a page limit. However, the illustrations are wonderful & my son loves this book.

This is a very sweet book, great gift for any NYY fans children. Seller delivered on time as stated and the book was in A-1 condition

Such a cute book - our kids love reading about this little boy's adventure around Yankee Stadium.

Received the book yesterday and have already read it 3 times with my 5 year old.

There aren't very many Romanian language resources out there, so this is your best option. I got a ton of use out of this phrasebook while I was in Romania. It's small enough to carry around in pretty much any purse or even a deep pocket. Not all the translations are perfect, but you will at least be able to get your point across. The book is sorted into categories and situations you might run into, which is useful. For example, there was a transportation section which helped when I was trying to buy a train ticket at the window. While many Romanians speak excellent English, everyone I spoke to was very happy I was at least trying to speak a little Romanian. I did also run into a few locals who didn't speak any English so this was a very helpful tool.

This is an excellent phrase book that does not always display word for word interpretations of Romanian expressions and also does not always teach the reader the proper phonics for the Romanian language. The reader needs to understand that a book cannot do these things because some of the Romanian expressions, vowels, and consonants do not exist in the English language. Having taken three vacations in Romania and a couple of basic CD language courses, I still find this Berlitz Romanian phrase book an outstanding source of basic Romanian expressions that a tourist can use in Romania. I have memorized the useful sayings in this book, and I highly recommend it for English-speaking tourists going to one of the most beautiful countries on Earth.

I'll start of by saying that this little phrase book is littered with information and phrases and is quite useful. However, it's not without its mistakes.For instance, there were a lot of words that were missing the Romanian specific ț (T-comma), thus changing the pronounciation of the word which would make you look like a fool if trying to say it. For example, cunoştintă instead of cunoştinţă was a mistake they made. It made me feel uneasy as to what else they could have gotten wrong in the book, so I always had to double before hand the things that I would actually intend to say to make sure that I wouldn't make a mistake. Also, some of the phrases were a little different than what you would hear a native Romanian speaker use or say. All in all it's the best phrase book out there for the Romanian language, and a must have if travelling to Romania.

Great little phrase book which is useful for translating on your own. I wouldn't depend on it for translations, though. As was mentioned earlier, it is missing some important things, sometimes omitting "ț". The biggest offender, though, was the phonetic translation for "ă". It's supposed to be roughly "uh", but they describe the sound as "er". This is way too far from the actual sound to be of any use. I'm using the book for it's dictionary in the back, and for the phrases, which are very useful. Otherwise, I say stick to other books such as Complete Romanian published by Teach Yourself, and get the one with the CDs. Listening to the sounds will be very useful when first learning the language.

Book was just great on our trip to Romania -- home of Vlad and Dracula, and our great friends. I was able to learn a few useful words and phrases on the plane to Bucharest. Thanks!

Easy to use and understand.

Easy to use and the small size fit perfectly in my backpack. My Romanian translators were critical of the pronunciation "key" and disagreed with the way the book explained the vowel sounds. Otherwise, it was very helpful and I would recommend it to others who take the same mission trip as I do to Romania.

Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) was well established as a major talent by the 1944 THE GLASS MENAGERIE. By the end of the 1950s he was easily among the best regarded dramatists in world theatre. But although Williams continued writing until the year of his death, after about 1960 he found both critical and popular success increasingly elusive.SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH opened in 1959 starring a remarkable pairing of Paul Newman and Geraldine Page and ran for about a year--but subsequent stagings and adaptations have not been as successful. A film version starring Newman and Page tampered with original script and emerged as stodgy instead of exciting; a major 1975 Broadway revival lasted fifty performances; and the play has not fared as well over time as such works as A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. It is rarely studied and rarely performed.SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH concerns a handsome drifter named Chance Wayne who has been picked up by a neurotic and has-been movie star with the unlikely private name of The Princess Kosmonopolis and the stage name of Alexandra Del Lago. After a drug-and-alcohol fueled road trip through Florida, the two have arrived at the semi-resort community of St. Cloud, the location of which is not specified but which from other geographic references seems to be on the Mississippi gulf coast.It happens that Chance has specifically come to St. Cloud in the hope of reuniting with his teenage love Heavenly Finley. We soon learn that on his last visit Chance gave Heavenly a nasty veneral disease that ultimately resulted in a hysterctomy, and that Chance has been warned away by Heavenly's father local political power Boss Finley, a vicious racist who is behind the recent castration of a black man accused of seducing white women. Heavenly's Aunt Nonnie and Boss Finley's mistress Miss Lucy warn him away; when Alexandra Del Lago recovers from her stupor and finds that her come-back film was a success, she too urges Chance to forget his young love, accept the fact that time has passed it by, and escape with her to California. But Chance refuses to leave, even though he knows that his efforts are futile, and the play ends with the strong implication that he too will be castrated by Boss Finley's minions.There are several difficulties with the play. The first is that the story is essentially a re-writing of Williams earlier ORPHEUS DESCENDING, which was a horrendous failure on Broadway in 1957 but which is nonetheless a noticeably better script. SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is also somewhat awkward in its shifting between realism and theatricality, the plot is somewhat implausible, and the second act is weak. But perhaps the single most deadly problem facing SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is that there isn't a likeable character in the entire play, with the possible exception of movie star Alexandra Del Lago, who ultimately accepts herself for what she is and has the good sense to walk away before the carnage begins. And this too is yet another problem with the play: we are never allowed to see the carnage, we are only left to assume it.All things considered, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is not among the genuinely great Williams plays, and indeed Williams would write only one other masterpiece, the 1961 NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, before beginning the rapid slide into alcohol and drugs that sapped his talents. But oddly, the very problems with SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH are what make it interesting, challenging, intriguing; one longs to see a really good staging of it and thereby know for certain if it works better on the stage than it does on the page. About the Author

BROTHER GUY CONSOLMAGNO, SJ was born in Detroit, Michigan, earned undergraduate and masters' degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences from MIT (in 1974 and 1975), and a Ph. D. in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona in 1978. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow and lecturer at Harvard University's Department of Astronomy, and MIT's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences; served in the US Peace Corps, teaching physics at the University of Nairobi; and was a physics professor at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, before entering the Jesuits as a brother in 1989. At the Vatican Observatory since 1993, his research explores connections between meteorites, asteroids, and the evolution of small solar system bodies. FATHER PAUL R. MUELLER, SJ is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended a Jesuit high school and earned a degree in physics at Boston University before entering the Society of Jesus in 1982. As part of his Jesuit training, he earned masters degrees in both philosophy and theology, along the way developing an interest in religion-science issues. After being ordained a priest in 1993, he attended the University of Chicago, where he completed a third masters degree (in physics) and a doctorate in the history and philosophy of science through the interdisciplinary program in Conceptual Historical Studies of Science.

Really enjoyed this book even if it is a bit unexpected in style. Brother Guy gave a talk at my parish which I very much enjoyed. This caused me to seek out some of his prolific work. His playful style, love of science in that child like way of wonder, and his deep faith combine into a very engaging teaching style. THis book is set up as a dialogue and each day features a different question. The question ostensibly science based always develops into a catechetical moment as well. Science and Faith are partners not adversaries and few bring this point to the fore better than Brother Guy. Not too heavy on science so the lay reader is fine and I don't think anything to explicitly Catholic to put off other folks from learning about Science and Faith working together. Highly recommend

This small book by two Jesuit astronomers at the Vatican Observatory is a gem of a discussion on science and the Bible. Written as an easy colloquial dialogue between them on questions they often receive from lay visitors to the observatory, the reader is nevertheless exposed to a good deal of both theology and science. The easy answer to the loaded question of the title (cf., Is it lawful for Jews to pay taxes to Caesar?) was: “Only if she asks.” The chapter on Genesis offers an opportunity not only to review some modern understandings of cosmology, but to discuss the many kinds of writings in the Bible, many of which were never intended to be taken as literal descriptions of science or history. A chapter on “What Happened to Poor Pluto?” discusses how science progresses, the problem of dealing with changing scientific concepts once they are imbedded in the popular culture, and how even theological pronouncements have often been the result of “messy” political debate. A chapter on Galileo explores the cultural and personality issues at work around his famous condemnation by the church and why this church “error” was far more complex than a presumed Catholic condemnation of science. A section on the “star of Bethlehem” not only explores plausible scientific explanations for something the magi (astrologers) might take note of, but further examines symbolic and allegorical reasons the author of the Gospel of Matthew might include a story such as that of the magi. Finally, scientific theories about the end of the world and the title question of baptizing an extraterrestrial are woven into discussions of the meaning of Christianity, the unity of truth, and the meaning of community. It is hard to find such a responsible discussion of these issues in an accessible and entertaining package of modest length, but the two Jesuit authors have done it.

A great book! It deals with various topics of faith and science in a very sincere, very serious, and at the same time very amusing way, through a dialogue between two Jesuit scholars, one a doctor in planetary sciences and the other a doctor in history and philosophy of science. The explanation they give about the difference between what a mystery means for science and for religion is one of the things that made me think, and I enyoyed the most. Another good subject is the similarity of how scientific knowledge operates, in the example of the problem of the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet, with respect to how the Church operates in councils, having to define and redefine certain concepts as new observations or situations occur, but without changes in the essential. The last "theology" to which I was exposed was the Baltimore Catechism, and while it was perfect for a child, it left a lot open for adults. This is THE PERFECT stepping stone to a better understanding of my faith. Yes, the initial chapters that use references to quantum and traditional physics as if they were M & M's were a bit daunting, but I persisted and fell in love with the repartee and the elegant way in which the authors explained the relationship between science and religion. I want everyone who is seeking as I am to read this, but first I have to bone up on the physics stuff and the underlying need to know more mathematics than I do and ... well, most of my education.

A unique blend of thoughtful science, philosophy, and Catholicism. Traditional in every sense, and clearly raising many of the prevailing arguments on the sides of science and religion. Fearless in its exploration. Thought provoking, and never pushy. Brother Guy and Father Paul clearly understand their faith AND science. A wonderful and masterful blend!

The author does an excellent job making the tension between faith and science seem almost harmonious. With historical anecdotes of well known people of Church history he reveals his premise that faith and science are both right. He uses humor and his personal experiences to make a difficult subject easy to digest. The ET answer is at the end of the book so the title does have relevance but you need to read the whole book.

Interesting concept, but the authors are a bit rambling and long-winded. Got bored about 2/3rds of the way through and quit.

Solid faith and solid science and NO CONFLICT between the two. A very good thougtful read

He has started seeing Laney as more of a woman and partner, but there is a stumbling block to their love. Galen has given the Grubb family a chance and has shown them Christian charity. In return, he is accused of fathering a baby and gets a wife he doesn't want - shotgun style. Laney doesn't believe it of Galen, but what can she do about it now?I hated 96% of this book. I was getting closer to the end and was beginning to despair of getting that happy ending that I require in my books. I just didn't see how it was going to be possible. In the end, I got it, but the way it came about was a little morbid. I felt bad for Laney, even though I liked her character progression through the book.There were only two books in this series, and it is safe to read them out of order. The first book was called Letter Perfect. I'm on the fence about my overall enjoyment of the book. Most of the time, if I hate 96% of a book, it's a miss for me. BUT, with this book, it was well written and I got my happy ending. Pretty good book if you don't mind the morbidity.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I know that I am rating it a 5 star. I am so torn, I am a person who reads a few chapters and then checks the ending to see if I have figured out what will happen. I will finish a book even knowing the end isn't as I thought.BUT, as much as I want to read the end of this one, I am not going to because I have come to trust that Ms. Hake will present a Christian based conclusion that will make perfect sense whether I want it that way or not. And when she does that, my faith in God is strengthened because perfect ending are not always possible but if we let God, He will bring us to all joy.

A wonderful, emotional ride of a book! There were several instances of the book that caused me to question how I would react in similar circumstances, and would my faith be as strong. I enjoy books that cause me to reflect, and characters that challenge me in my faith.I did read a negative review that I wanted to address, with respect and from a different perspective. One reviewer felt that Ivy and Ishmael were negative southern stereotypes. I've lived in the south my entire life (South Carolina and Virginia). And while I agree if the characters were current day southerners. However, I found them to be somewhat true to the Appalachian mountain peoples of the era in which the book is set. These folks were typically descendants of Scot-Irish immigrants, and their speeches and mannerisms were far different than the southerners of, say, Charleston or Richmond. Even today, you will see differences in dialect between southerners of different regions.All in all, I found this to be a very enjoyable story, and I loved being transported to another time and place!

I count Cathy Marie Hake as one of the best fiction writers out there today. I fell in love with her writing when I read, "Letter Perfect". Frankly I downloaded it on my Kindle because it was on free list and sounded like something I'd enjoy. But it was so much more. It was wonderful. Her talent is obvious from page one. "Bittersweet " was the second book about the same characters that I wasn't ready to lay aside after "Letter Perfect". It was every bit as entertaining and well written. I recommend it highly.

Bittersweet actually follows several stories at once, and does a great job of keeping you involved with the characters. One reviewer called the book boring, and didn't like that they followed Ivy and Ishmael so much, but they ended up being an integral part of the story, and a wonderful example of God's love and healing. Yes, Ivy is wrong on how she goes about 'capturing' Gallen, but she truly has a bittersweet story. And, of course, there is a happy ending - which I love!

I really enjoyed this book about Galen and Laney. Bittersweet was named excellent title. I was shocked and felt angry at the turn of events. All turned out in the end, but what a wonderful Christian journey. Keep writing these excellent historical Christian romance novels.

CM Hake's knack for humor never fails to be a saving grace. That and her penchant for unexpected but interesting plot twists make her stories fun to read. They're short enough, light enough, with just enough heartwarming romance mixed in to leave you feeling like the read was worth it, and you could do with another one of her books sometime soon.There is room for improvement in some areas, but the overall reading experience has a pleasant and simple homeliness about it that compels you to relate to her characters, and find the gems of wisdom liberally sprinkled throughout. I liked this book and the prequel. Made me laugh.

I enjoyed book #1 of this series better, enough to go buy this one. Although this is a really good book, it seemed that the characters did not develop as much. (so be sure to read book 1 first.) I was happy with the ending. As I read this, it enforced that although tragic things happen, God has a plan.
