The first thing that struck me when reading In Pursuit of Weightlessness was the odd mixture of feeling slightly offended yet incredibly entertained at the same time. In short, I knew I was in for a reflective ride and therefore wanted to keep turning the page. And I’ve given it 5-stars despite this initial judgement — because that’s exactly why — this book hits to the core of all our judgements as one of the best articulations of meditation and philosophical discourse about mind-body that I’ve ever read. We’ve all had our share of run-of-the-mill spirituality and self-help reads, this one worked like a sledgehammer to my very understanding of things I thought I knew a lot about (namely meditation, mind-body arts, fitness, entrepreneurship and love, though it covers the gamut of “life stuff†and really deserves sitting on the Philosophy shelf). It’s a book written with extremely concise, commanding articulation of topics that are often relegated to esoteric personal experiences or dry science-based texts. The array of stories, topics and locations make it a delightful read; along with the memorable characters and title headings that would challenge Yoda and warrant T-shirts. Though rather crude at times, I was cognizant they were stories written by a man recounting his early 20s, taking on experiences that shaped his values on things most people never dare explore in their pursuits of comfortable or moralistic living. In hindsight then, quite mature, when the author connects the dots on the intentional provocation as a vehicle to poke at our very notion of getting caught up in the “culture†of meditation. It made me notice my own desire to relegate these mindful practices to only realms of good feeling and positive outcomes as opposed to the grit and disappointment that always accompanies hard work; to embrace that stress rather than fall under its weight. This slowly dawned on me as I was reading the book; it’s complex irony, it’s desire to see, if you can look beyond the juvenile experiences, the notion that real masters understand that the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts. There are books that create provocation for short-term gain, Weightlessness takes a look at the necessary essentials for playing the long game in life — providing not only needed reframes on a convoluted topic but a call-to-action and some practical guides to get started today. All-in-all a really strong primer for self-development with a refreshing dose of hard reality that will make you want to actually get off the couch to do something with your life rather than laze around reading self-help books!
Turn the page in your life story...heck rip a few pages out...nah, burn that book and all the preconceptions you've neatly labeled and categorized to aid in future decision-making. Just let go and rewrite the story of your life using the In Pursuit of Weightlessness as a beacon of knowledge to transform mind and body.If you are reading this and other reviews, you probably want to change in one way or another but are unsure of whether the investment is worth it. Well, in a few words…it is and probably costs less than the bottle of wine, pack of cigarettes or container of whey protein powder you just bought. If you are willing to empty your “proverbial†cup and fill it with the elixir of limitless possibilities, then you should have no problem assimilating the information and transforming yourself with hard work over time. If you already have a strong intent and will to change, but just need a place to start…stop reading and buy the book!WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:1) You’ve probably heard the Zen/Chan Buddhist quote about a finger pointing to the moon or maybe you are more familiar with Bruce Lee’s use of this teaching in Enter the Dragon – “Don't think, feel! It is like a finger pointing a way to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory. Do you understand?†If you will allow me to bastardize the moral a smidge, then the Moon in this book can be seen as the subtext and the finger as the physical words inked on the page. In short…don’t get stuck on the words or your feelings of how they are presented…use your critical reading skills to extract the real meaning in the stories and you will find the path to all the heavenly glory that is Weightlessness. Don’t judge…don’t think…FEEEEEL each tale and how it relates to transforming the body and mind by becoming weightless.2) This book is not a shortcut to a physique of the Gods or to reaching enlightenment…I’ve yet to find that one. Joking aside, there are not shortcuts in life…but you probably already know that. You and you alone will have to put in all of the physical and mental work required to transform. If you are doing it correctly, then it will be hard work over time that will see you to your goals…much like anything else in life. Sure you can cherry pick a few things here and there and more than likely see noticeable, albeit short-term, changes/gains, but if you really want to transform you will need to embrace all aspects/pillars of the Weightlessness program/lifestyle. Again, this means you will need to lose your fixed self and work for it – however the rewards far outweigh the monetary cost of the book and definitely vastly exceed the psychological toll that a life of regrets has on a person. Followed through to its end, Weightlessness can help you find the life in every moment – that is, if you want it.3) You won’t find canned workout routines here, nor will you find exhaustive writings and research on the theory and practices of mindfulness or Qigong. However, you will find the start of the path as it has been neatly and thoughtfully laid out before you. Lao Tzu said, “The journey of a 1000 miles begins with one step.†The author has provided you with the first step…the rest are yours if you want it.4) Finally, this book has great potential to help you make the changes you are seeking. I highly recommend picking up copy or downloading digital – because, as it turns out, you only have today – this moment, as tomorrow is not promised and the past is just a distorted collection of ghostly events. As a final note, I would like to say thank you to the author for having the wherewithal to bring the gift of this book to me and my wife…we are forever grateful, forever changed and weightless in a way we never knew possible.
Just finished Tom's book In Pursuit of Weightlessness. Having trained martial arts myself for the past 37 years and having a lifelong interest in mind/body connection and fitness, I can say that Tom's principles in the book hold value and truth for those willing to work them. This book has re-energized my own practices and added a few new ones. Tom's description and explanation of what mindfulness meditation really is provided an understanding cutting right to the core of the practice. I have never observed this in any other writing on the subject. I found the book to be challenging at times but in a very honest way. Great stories, parables and anecdotes to illustrate the principles. The integrated practice of the core principles in the book will help you to live life from a place of physical, mental and spiritual strength and health. I know myself that this provides the resilience and confidence to handle life's challenges. Read this book with an open mind and you will get a lot out of it. The last chapter pulls all parts together nicely in a dialogue between Tom and colleague. I intend to read it again as I am sure I missed some wisdom the first time through. I look forward to Tim's follow up book coming soon!
This is an amazing book. The stories are both entertaining and deliver a lesson much like an ancient martial arts fable. The author demonstrates how to improve your mind, body, and spirit using simple tools and principles available to anyone. This is a must read for anyone looking to make positive changes in their life.
A full mind body system for achieving your maximum potential. Also, a very entertaining read as the author is very funny and has many amusing anecdotes regarding clients and his own personal exploits.
