Alex Deford was born in 1971 and died just 8 years later in 1980. She had Cystic Fibrosis. Alex: The Life of a Child is the story of her life as told by her father. When I was 12 or 13 I bought a copy of this book at a yard sale. I read it multiple times. For some reason I really loved the story of Alex. It’s been years since I last read it and it is still a great story. It is touching and told with such honesty and heartbreaking love. I highly recommend reading it.

This version of the book is abridged. Several key parts are left out, including Mr. Deford's discussion of how they came to adopt their daughter, Scarlett. This is a wonderful book, but the Kindle version is abbreviated. I recommend getting a version in print.

I first discovered this story in the December 1984 Reader's Digest in the featured book section. Even abbreviated, it was staggering. I saw the TV film later on, and still later, I found and bought the whole book. Since then, few January 19th's, the anniversary of her death, have passed that I have not thought of Alex and the family she left behind. I might do her memory more justice if I remembered her birthday instead, but her father did not write of her birth the way he did of her death.Frank Deford is an excellent and prolific writer of both fact and fiction and who makes personal to the reader every event he shares of Alex's life and death. Especially her death. Perhaps he didn't mean to make her death more poignant than her life, but it would be impossible to play it down. He paints nearly every hour of that last day of her life so vividly that I wondered if he was taking notes as it happened; he did, after all, keep a personal journal (no, I don't believe that he kept a notebook by the side of his dying baby's bed, only that he wrote it in such detail that it was as if he had done so.) These days, most people who die of lengthy, drawn-out illnesses die peacefully, only semi-conscious, doped up to the gills against unbearable pain. But though Alex might have been in pain, death did not take her peacefully. She didn't fight it, but neither did she go quietly. She was awake and aware to the very last second of her short life. As he said, she had spent so much of her little life dying that she wasn't about to miss the final act when it came. It was difficult enough to read when I wasn't yet a parent. It became even more meaningful after I became a parent. And then still more, when my daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor.Alex's story made me aware of cystic fibrosis, to the point that I felt compelled, once I was gainfully employed, to begin contributing a few dimes a year to the CF Foundation. It's never been very much, but neither has the foundation ever returned an uncancelled check to me claiming it was too little to accept.Other parts of the story make strong impressions, such as her ability to act and mimic anything she saw on a TV or movie screen; she could have been an actress, or maybe a dancer, as she loved to twirl around with grace and energy, "imaginating" a world in which no one suffered pain or death or had to do therapy. The deep and serious discussions with people outside of her family circle regarding death, God and Heaven and her love of jokes and humor and silliness. Her obsession with beauty and jewelry, and the outrageous insensitivity with which she was treated several times by cold and heartless doctors. Fortunately, I can say that today, through my own experience with doctors and hospitals, the medical staff in the pediatric departments treat their young patients with great respect and compassion.We could wish that ALL types of childhood ailments were written about as beautifully. There are other illnesses and disabilities that are just as deadly. He states at one point that "some diseases, even some fatal ones, don't put too many demands on the family of the patient." I felt like that wasn't quite a fair statement. If a loved one has a disease, particularly a potentially fatal disease to one's child, the demands of just living day to day with the knowledge that you will never be able to take for granted your child's good health is a pretty difficult burden to carry, not to mention the 'round-the-clock effort devoted to simply making the child comfortable. I do hope that I'm mistaken in his meaning of that statement. I can't imagine he would truly intend to dismiss other fatal illnesses children suffer as being easier to deal with.But then really, this story isn't really about sick children. It's not even about cystic fibrosis; it is about Alex, and there is only ONE Alex Deford. I know that there is, as he says, no value in losing your child. You don't gain anything meaningful from it. But because the rest of us have had the good fortune to stumble onto his story of Alex, many, many thousands of others have found meaning in their own lives as a result of Alex's life, however brief it was. The CF Foundation has also benefited. So, thank you Alex, for living, and thank you, Frank Deford, for sharing your daughter with the rest of us.

Very good book. This is the life of Alex, a little girl who dies of cystic fibrosis at age 8. It talks about the disease, what it does to the child, & the family. How it gradually takes over a person's life until there is nothing left. Alex was very brave & wise beyond her years. The author lets you into those final moments of her life, how she faced them & what it is like to watch your child die. A real tear jerker - not for the faint of heart.

I read this book as a child and bought the ebook last year. Strangely, it's not the version I remember reading when I was younger. I think they updated it and that is the one I remember. This must be the original. A good book. Sad but touching.

Many of her childhood friends were influenced by Alex and are practicing the field of healthcare. Over the years this book has been used in schools to educate children as young as 10 years old. Having never met her, other people inspired by this book or the movie, visit her grave site and have joined the plight seeking a cure for CF.According to my research, CF is primarily a disease that is much more prevalent with Caucasians and "over 90% of the affected infants now survive beyond one year."Studies show "the life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients has been increasing over the past 40 years. Life expectancy of individuals with adequate pancreatic function can be more than 50 years."Alex lived, loved and set an example for the ages. She was a poster child for CF. She was an angel of a daughter. Her brother, Christopher was her idol. More than anything she wanted to live and be free of CF. She worried about the impact of her death upon her loved ones.She lives on in the hearts and minds of those who know her story. Alex would be 41 now, had she survived, yet she will forever be the brave little girl who lives in the pages of this unforgettable story told by her father in a manner that will squeeze your heartstrings and make your eyes moist and glisten with sadness, joy and awe.Celebrate and enjoy the life of an angel!

Dr. David Krueger's knowledge of neuroscience and how it applies to our ability to understand our relationship with money is exceptional. This is a book that shares a depth of information yet is easy to understand and follow.

This book was easy to read, it is not the typical "start paying your credit card with lowest balance first". What I really liked about it is the focus on the internal aspects of money. Even though it is not a magic solution is a very interesting starting point for every single person to understand what "money" means to them.

Mr. Shelton followed up the Golden Dragon with the Golden Scepter and it has as much action as the first book. The Dragon King and his riders have had their magic stolen by an evil female wizard. Meanwhile Ali has been brainwashed into being a fighter for one Wizard the passes to the Wizard who now calls herself the Dragon Queen. As usual, Roland has proclaimed himself the High Wizard and in his search for more magic finds the Golden Scepter which turns him into a greedy power hungry ruler (all for the good of the people) With Bakari and Lyman at death's door what will become of the kingdoms?

Fabulous story. Sorry to see the story end.

Wow! Mike does it again with Book 2 of The Dragon Artifacts. It was hard to put down to get some sleep and you can’t wait to finish the story. While the dragons hibernate, the rider use horses to go in search of the artifacts. Alli has been kidnapped and is stuck with the slave master from the arena while Bak, Gabby, Liam and Jaimon go looking for Delia before she can get to the dragon artifacts. She is already at the cave when Bak’s group arrives there. Delia has an artifact that rips the dragon bond from the currently bonded riders. She tries to trap Bak’s group inside the cave but they escape. The large golden dragon statue comes to life and flies off to join Roland who is using the golden Scepter of Unification and its power. Jaimon who was trapped inside the cave rejoins them, he managed to escape and has 2 dozen artifacts from the cave with him. Can’t wait for the next book.

Overall rating: 5I get so mad at these characters! One seems too humble, one is too arrogant, one should not have been so easily brainwashed! Yet, all are exactly as they need to be in order to have me flying down this storyline! Of course this author once again made it impossible for me to not look for the next book! This tale is epic and I am mentally trying to figure out how everything will play out. Kasper and the wolf truly should have their own spinoff! All my reviews are always voluntarily written

Echoes many of my sentiments from the early days.As for the days surrounding my involvement, it is how I remember it, and how I intended it.That never happens, but it did in this book, and I don't even know this guy, and never talked to him. He did use some of my photos without asking me though, and I never got a dime. I can be reached through Thrashers publisher, in the event there is a check waiting for me, and no where to mail it.

Growing up in the 80s I was surrounded by skateboarding, whether it be in the form of my Mom's friend's daughter showing me how to (attempt to) ride down the street at age 10, the kids skating in the "hip town" of Hyannis, MA (which was a "city" to someone from The Cape), watching my neighbors skate and build their own ramps, watching the early skate videos, or ogling through Transworld Skate or Thrasher and wishing I'd had enough coordination to actually be able to learn what I was seeing. I found this book at the public library and thought it might be an interesting read, but I had no idea what I was in for. Granted, Weyland's writing can be very subjective and he tends to "go off" about what skating has become (as many people who have been skating their entire life can), but what he wrote isn't just his complaints about skating and the industry. There's a lot of information about the history of skating (which a lot of people who claim to skate might not have any ideas about), and also stories about what skating was like before The Circus of what is now began. What he's written gives the person who doesn't understand skating the ability to have some inkling of what it's like, and to understand that "skating" isn't just what they see, but it's a culture, a lifestyle, a thought pattern, a philosophical journey, and can even be a family. One truly interesting part of the book (for me, being a 28 year-old college professor) is Weyland's comments and thoughts about going from being "in the know" to being considered "old." I would definitely suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of the sport and the genesis of what they see before them today.

This book is absolutely loaded with memories, from us old surfers who skated pools, to the kids who skate all the parks around the country and haven't bothered to experience the joy of getting chased out of public skate venues--all of us need to read this work of art. All of a sudden, all these great books have come out about our little world: Hawk's book (HAWK, OCCUPATION SKATEBOARDER) takes us inside the life of a pro (okay, well, inside the life of a god); AGENTS OF CHANGE takes us inside the world of DC Shoes and they're all worthy of putting on our coffee tables or on our bookshelves and maintaining a little bit of history. I give this book a deep asian bow... I'll love it long time.

I found Jocko Weyland's book to be an incredible history of skating because he unearthed some of the more obscure heroes of skating (those that were not given credit in Dogtown) who hailed from disparate parts of the globe including Hawaii. I also love that the author skated with the elks in Colorado.If you are into skating or know someone who is, buy this frickin' book. It tells the whole tale!

As a lifelong skateboarder, I was stoked (yes, I said 'stoked') to see a book like this come out. And I retained my stoke during the book's introduction. The introduction could stand alone as an inspired and revelatory essay.But after slogging through the first few chapters, I couldn't go on. I found the writing style to be simultaneously dry and overwritten. A bit of a feat really. It often feels as though the author's writing style was to get through a checklist of datapoints.The Answer Is Never states data without inspiration or revelation. So while it achieves textbook status, it omits the quizes at the end of each chapter.The editing is flat, and the copyediting is dismal. Mislaid lines of text and typos abound.

Bought this for my nephew as a Christmas gift. My brother told me he really got into skating this past summer. Based on reviews it sounded like it would be perfect for him. He was so excited to receive it. It turns out he met one of the authors and apparently skates where he does and couldn't wait to show him the gift.

I purchased this as a gift for my nephew who is a dyed in the wool skating buff (takes after his dad at the same age), and who informed me that the current term is "skating"; they no longer call it "skateboarding";...learn something new every day :;). My nephew loves the book. It is small enough to take along with him, is packed with history of the sport, and is written by a true legend of the sport. I nailed it as far as my nephew is concerned!

If you love skateboarding you should buy this book. It's a nice history that is intelligently written. It talks about skateboard culture with the alienated, angry kids, and how it is so different from organized sports. It covers the early beach culture skaters, punk rock skaters, Dogtowners and the beginning of vert riding. This book is fun to read.
