'Sunday Suppers' is a beautifully appointed book which has a variety of different menus for various occasions, from breakfast to lunch to dinner. While I haven't yet personally tried any of the the recipes, they seem simple and easy for the home cook. What is most amazing about the book is the way it looks, the way it feels and the way it reads. Between the soft cover, the heavier than normal weighted paper, and the beautiful illustrations/photographs, the book reads like a regular book rather than a cookbook. In fact, I would venture to say that you would enjoy reading this even if you never made any of the recipes. It's just that beautiful of a book.You really can't go wrong with this book. If you want to do the recipes, then it's great. If you just want to admire it as a coffee table book, it's great for that as well. But if you want to hold a beautiful book and admire what's inside, this is the best use of all. Enjoy!

To date, 40 out of 44 reviewers, or 91% of them, gave this book 5 or 4 stars, which would seem to indicate this is an excellent book.However, because 11 reviews were written by people who received free copies in exchange for writing a review and another 20 consisted of one or two lines of text (e.g., "Love love love this book", "First class", "Beautiful book") - that's over 75% of the reviews! - I was not completely convinced.So, I checked it out for myself - by checking out a copy from our public library. And, I would agree the book is lovely coffee-book material (linen cover, aspirational photographs), and the concept is noble (communal dining and building community), and I did find a couple of interesting recipes (Beet Pickled Eggs, Fennel Slaw and Winter Slaw).However, I also found a few recipes that made me start to wonder about the "cookability" of the rest of the recipes in the book.For example: .- Apple Olive Oil Cake that serves 8-10 with 5 cups of sugar, 3 cups of olive oil, 3 cups of whole milk and 6 eggs?!?! Yikes! I'm afraid to make that even for a special occasion splurge!- Ice Cream recipes that are heavy on the egg yolks. For example, 1 qt of David Lebovitz ice cream generally uses 3 cups of dairy liquids (milk, cream) and 4-5 egg yolks. Sunday Suppers uses 6 cups of dairy and 12-15 egg yolks. Also, Sunday Suppers' recipes only provide servings ("serves 6-8") rather than quantity. The standard qty for most ice cream recipes is 1 qt (see Lebovitz, Jeni's, Bi-Rite, Ciao Bella). The Sunday Suppers' recipes are probably closer to 2 qts, no doubt because this is for communal dining, but it would've been very helpful if they made that clear since not everyone owns a 2qt capacity ice cream maker.Lack of specifics hurts a couple more recipes . For example, the Chocolate Bread Pudding recipe doesn't provide a weight for the amount of challah bread. Only "12 cups 1-inch cubes (about 2 regular loaves or 3 small loaves)". Same for the Wild Mushroom and Brioche Stuffing.If the recipe said "1 lb of bread cut into 1 inch cubes" that would've been a lot more helpful.Another disconnect for me was including a Fig Tart recipe in the Winter Brunch menu. Where the heck are you gonna find fresh figs in the middle of winter? And if you do, how much are they gonna cost?So in conclusion, I think this book would appeal most to aspirational cooks. Experienced cooks will likely find they already have a favorite recipe for many of the dishes (e.g., Fish Tacos, Black Beans and Rice, Perfectly Scrambled Eggs, Granola, Fried Chicken, Guacamole). And if you do cook from the book, I would try to stick with the sandwich, salad, veggie recipes that don't require precise quantities and are lower in sugar and butter.

It's a gorgeously photographed book, and I will say that the challah bread turned out beautifully. However, I have an intuition for challah and was able to assess how well the bread would turn out and make small changes as I was making it. I was not so lucky when I attempted to make the pretzels. The proportions of liquids to flour were way off. The dough was clearly too wet, but I shrugged it off because perhaps pretzel dough is meant to be that way? However, once it was clear the recipe would fail, I tried to compare it to Alton Brown's and it was clear that this was just a poor recipe that had not been sufficiently tested.My advice: this is a great inspirational book but proceed with caution when trying recipes that are new to you. I would not assume that these recipes have been well-tested. Perhaps the rest of them are great and I got the one bad egg - but I honestly don't feel that there is any excuse for an underdeveloped recipe in an edited cookbook.

I will preface this review by saying that I am not a professional chef, nor do I have foods memorized by season...I gave this book five stars because I feel like the recipes are approachable, but will push the average home cook a little bit outside their comfort zone. I love the intention behind the recipes and the focus given to the experience of preparing and enjoying the food. In a world of fast food and digital socialization, I think this book is refreshing and encourages connection to our food and companions on a different wavelength. The pictures are visually appealing and this is a book I can see myself flipping through for inspiration and relaxation. I do have several food allergies in my household that I have to work around, but I didn't see a single recipe that I couldn't make appropriate substitutions for. There are plenty of recipes that are family friendly (like the children's birthday party menu), and there are some that would make a special meal just for me and my husband. Overall, I'm loving the book.

Not exactly what I expected ~ I don't feel the recipes represent what I think is a family or group of friends gathering. The choices here are not hearty or generous enough for a Sunday Supper~there are some nice choices but spotty at best for me.

This book has some really gorgeous photos, and is pretty delightful to flip through. Almost seems more like a lifestyle book more then a cooking book, but it has a lot of delicious-looking recipes to choose from. I'm very excited to try them out, especially the cinnamon coffee!

Do yourself a favor and do not buy this book. I have tried several recipes out of this book and none of them have come out right. There is something wrong with the proportions for sure. Just take a look at the Apple Olive Oil cake recipe if you don't believe me after you buy it. I have wasted too much time and money trying to cook from this book. No more.

Book one left me unsure about this series with the time jump and Magic virus storyline. Book two has definitely stepped up the game and now I am impatiently waiting for the next one.The character development is coming along nicely with interesting new ones as well as bringing Alison forward from the teen in the School of Necessary Magic series into a grownup who has the “best” qualities of Brownstone and Shay as well as her own twist on Brownstonian grade destruction of enemies.Another quality tale from the twisted minds of Anderle and Carr.

I've thoroughly enjoyed these stories. The characters have such depth and flaws that you can't imagine that they aren't real.The stories are direct and reading them uncomplicated. You don't have to work to understand the motivations and situations.Normally, when you finish a book, you can go months or even years worrying about what happening with characters. These books come frequently enough and belong to a universe of books that you can't possibly run out of stories.My hat is off to Martha and Michael. Bravo!

The plot thickens as Alison unravels more threads in the web of threat that surrounds her in Seattle. In true Brownstone fashion, she’s going to educate her enemies - it’s up to them whether it’s the easy way, or the “wind up dead” way.

Love that Alison is training Hana. Glad that Hana is looking Alison up and Alison is accepting. Glad Shay is in this story. Love the excitement, danger, and but kicking.

This a wonderful new story in the Alison Brownstone adventure and I can’t wait to see what happens next to her and Hana and the whole Brownstone family. ENJOY

Probably one of the most important reads of my adult life. Herman outlines the precise strategies used by top performers from the world of sports, politics, entertainment and more to become even more powerful on and off the field of play than they are innately.It's counter-intuitive and makes perfect sense. His historical examples of well-known achievers using the Alter Ego Effect are ample proof - if proof is needed - that this process for improved performance works and has done for millenia.While so many self-help books blindly suggest that you should step into an improved version of "you" (or more dangerously, that you are enough), Herman's book is the first one I've read to explain WHY a new version of you is going to be far more useful in life and specifically HOW to put that alter ego to play.Read this book.

In an incredibly relatable journey that guides you through the process to show up in every opportunity or situation in your life, (in ways what you know you are capable but struggle to overcome self doubt, family stories, or past trauma), this book is about to change the "field of play" for me in many ways.I’d heard about Alter Ego’s before from Todd Herman, and even put them into practice in my business, but Todd’s stories, examples and framework in the book for putting into practice these secret identities has shifted my view of how I can use DIFFERENT Alter Ego’s in the areas I struggle most.Interestingly, it’s not only “work” that I am challenged to show up how I need to, it’s at home, too.I’m on chapter 11 of the audio book right now, and can tell you, this book is a game changer for me as a mom, a wife and a leader.I'll be gifting this book to every member of my team, as well as friends and clients alike, because who can't use a little motivation to bring out the hero inside? So Good.

The main idea of this book is to get the reader to imagine themselves as a different character to get the results they want. It is written a bit too fluffy for my tastes (here's a story about Bob, Bob made this work, etc. like many self help books) but some may find the examples more useful, I skimmed most of them. That being said, I did find the techniques useful and an actively using them. What I find interesting though is that humans seem to have an innate capability to do this, perhaps schizophrenia is when this innate ability is in the far end of the spectrum, but normally it is useful and serves an evolutionary advantage!

The power of the Alter Ego Effect is brilliantly captured in this book. Todd Herman talks through how to use the power of your creative imagination so you can, within minutes, start to shape a narrative about you that serves you.As an athlete I've unknowningly used Alter Egos for years to perform on the hockey field. But by consciously going through Todd's Alter Ego process I've been able to launch a successful podcast, start a coaching practice and push myself outside my comfort zone. This has helped me achieve goals that I had forever though were just "good ideas".I'd highly encourage you to read this book and use Todd's principles to pull out the YOU whose capable of greatness.. whatever your Field of Play.

Full disclosure: I not only got an early copy, I helped Todd edit the book and even pushed him to actually finish it (like all first time authors, he was anxiopus about it).I don't have much to add to the book in terms of telling you whats in it, the other reviews cover that well. I just want to tell you that this is the first book of its type that has a truly original idea I've read in a LONG LONG time.Don't get me wrong--Todd did not invent the idea of alter egos, obviously. From Clark Kent back to the Muses, the ideas in the book are universal and timeless.But that's what makes this book so good, is that Todd is the first to really identify and explain them. Its like he's the guy teaching fish that they live in water.This book will, at a minimum, be a great read for you. But what most people will get from it will be a life-changing shift of perspective that creates some incredible breakthroughs (it did for me).

Full disclosure. I've been a fan and student of Todd Herman's 90 Day Year program for over a year now. His new book is so inspiring. Trust me, it's worth the read if you are ready to up your A game. Your Alter Ego isn't a fraud. It's YOU helping YOU perform at your best. It's you getting out of your own way. I know that one reason I resonate so strongly with Todd's take about alter egos is how much it correlates to my own views about our intuition, and why for too many, we lose touch with the importance our intuition plays in our hearts and minds, as well as our confidence and ability to not only believe we can do great things, but actually accomplish great things.

When I first heard about the concept of alter egos, I was intrigued. But I wondered if this would really apply to me, so I decided to read the book and find out. I'm impressed and highly recommend this book.First, the author Todd Herman is an expert in this space and has been coaching top performers for decades. Second, he explains the concepts in an engaging and relatable way with many examples of people who have used this—people you may be surprised about.You may already be using an alter ego. I realized I was (trying to), but Herman gave me the tools to really amp it up and use it in a way that’s consistent.Also, great takeaways from this book were the 5 bridges to progress and moments of impact. Since reading this book, I’ve started thinking about my career and relationships in those terms and already see a huge difference. 

I love the way this book contains actionable steps for you to apply the alter ego approach in your life. There are so many areas of my life—fields of play— where I can use this.

In spite of the odd typo and grammatical error, I didn't find that they took away from my enjoyment of this book, nor of the information gleaned. There is some excellent historical data to be had here that is difficult to find elsewhere. And for that, Binckes should be applauded.I found the last set of chapters after the Battle of Boomplaats in 1848 very interesting. Of particular note was the chapter on the skirmishes between the various chieftains in the Sovereignty. My only criticism is that one is apt to get lost knowing who is who after a while, thus necessitating a second read. The chapter on the signing of the Sand River Convention was also very interesting.I think Binckes has done an excellent job with his background research, especially of characters that don't make it into the pages of our formal history books. I therefore recommend this book as an additional read to the history books already out there on the Great Trek. It will definitely enhance the reader's understanding of both the social and political milieu of the times.

This is not a serious history book, however much research the author has done. The author uses a "faction" approach throughout the work, regularly fluffing up the facts he has found with made up stuff about the emotional behaviour of the historical figures. And the editing?! Appalling. Really not worth reading. Rather read the author's novel.

This is one of the most interesting non-fiction books I have read; it is about a subject only a few Americans k ow about (history of SouthAfrica and Boer "treks"to new areas including Zulu wars; British theft of country and the bravery of the Boers. You will enjoy it greatly and be much better educated about this area's history!

A mass of facts, often poorly written and repetitive, and I found the direction and story hard to find and follow. Modern phrases, similes, and episodes (Mandela) were thrown in - a bit odd! Facts appeared not to be properly cross-checked, and editing sloppy, e.g. cordite was not in use until 1890's and then in pre-loaded rifle cartridges, not in muzzle-loading weapons. Where did all the livestock come from? I would have liked to have seen weights and measures in the original units, perhaps with current units alongside.Despite these and other annoyances, I learnt a lot from the different perspective of the book.I will read it again in a month or so!

Very detailed and interesting history of the settling of South Africa. As an American I knew very little about this history and found it fascinating and very similar to the settling of the American west. I certainly learned a lot.

Excellent book. This book will appeal to most discerning readers, you don't have to live in South Africa, you don't have to have any stake it the history, you don't have to enjoy history, it is just a great book for anyone. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

It's worth reading just to get a good overview of South African history, but I find the book is badly edited and very repetitious.I had the pleasure of hearing Binckes speak when I was in SA and he is a much better and more enthusiastic speaker than a writer. That's why I bought the book when I got back, and also did not want to carry the extra weight while traveling.I find his information is well balanced for the most part - he doesn't take sides but simply relates the facts as well as he can without prejudice. Easy reading but not terribly well written.

This is an amazing recount of the events and times surrounding the Great Trek. Informative, unbiased, interesting and well researched, this book is highly recommended to anyone with a curiosity for history. Mr. Binckes tells it as it is, as if he was there. I can not wait for him to write more on the theme of Southern African history.
