He will criticize and recognize fault, but his approach is to presume that the dramatists knew what they were doing and to ask why. The book is filled with rewarding insights. no one has outgrown this book, despite its date. K. is also good at showing the development of drama and of the dramatists, the problems with which they wrestled. He also makes one aware that so often one confronts an author grappling with something--problem, technique, opportunity--for the first time. have always read his treatments while reading the plays in Greek and have always been rewarded.
