I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of fontÂ throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

Cute book. Not what I was expecting and not something I'd have normally picked up to read.That being said ... something that I may read over and over again. Beautifully written and rhythmic without being poetic.Interesting how so much of it still resonates today ... 60 years later. And how much of it needs to be taught and reminded to girls and women of all ages. Extremely disappointed.....this was a 50th Anniversary Edition and yet it did not include the beautiful 4-color illustrations of each shell that highlighted each section and became a book I cherished 50 years ago. I wanted to present a copy to each of 3 granddaughters........BUT NOT THIS EDITION.I AM RETURNING THEM. And will look for a used copy of the original edition. THE FACT THAT THE COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS WEREINTEGRAL TO THE CHRM OF THIS LITTLE BOOKLET......their illumination from this important Anniversary Edition should have been mentioned.

Use of the word 'love' as a # 5 rating does not fit my philosophical use of the word. I hope no regrets here. As for the book by Anne, this is one of the most powerful and important books I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone. I used this wonderful lady's writings in my profession over some 60 years and cherish what she writes for us all. To anyone, regardless of age, sex, race, education, etc. I heartily and totally recommend reading.

I first read 'Gift from the Sea' decades ago when I was in my 20's and loved it then. However, I just completed it again and identified so much more with Anne Morrow Lindbergh's life insights as she spends time alone in a small cottage on Captiva Island Florida. Like the author I am now at a time in my life where I have been married for a long time and my child is grown and I can appreciate her questioning the value of relationships, obligations and how we spend our time on too many things that do not align with our search for meaning in our lives. Mrs. Lindbergh wrote this book in 1955 but it is just as relevant today, even more so as we are inundated with the distractions of technology and social media infringing on the privacy of our lives and solitude becomes a rare and valuable commodity. Anne Lindbergh's gift is showing us a way back to ourselves, a breath of fresh air offering space within the busyness of our lives.

Wow. This book was given to me as a gift from my aunt, who received her first copy 25 years earlier, with the 25th Anniversary Edition. What a blessing! The author word's are as relevant to women today, as they were 50 years ago. After finishing the book, I immediately purchased two more to give as gifts.

Gift from the Sea resonated with me to a magnitude I did not expect. While some of the troubles of a housewife feel a bit dated, the struggle to find happiness, meaning, and balance ring true today for women, but also for men.I hope these invigorating chapters give me motivation to spend more time looking inwards for happiness, and to dedicate more time to myself.

Written in 1955, with an addendum in 1973, I can see why this book sold so well, and why it remains so popular. It's the kind of contemplative book everyone wishes they could write, and to say this book is prescient would be an understatement. From the Wikipedia post, this says it well: Lindbergh wrote this essay-style work taking shells on the beach for inspiration, and reflecting on the lives of Americans, particularly American women, in the mid-twentieth century. She shares her meditations on youth and age; love and marriage; peace, solitude and contentment during her visit. Sometimes classified as inspirational literature, the book presages many of the themes in that genre of popular literature: simplicity, solitude and caring for the soul.Gift from the Sea is a pretty quick read, but well worth the price of admission. The target audience was clearly women, but it's a book for men as well, and what really stands out is how prescient this book was, and how relevant the book remains over 60 years after it was written. A big thumbs up for an interesting and quick read.

The bottom line of this review is that if you liked any of Riordan's previous books you'll like this one also. It has all the features we've come to love about Riordan's books. We have young protagonists who are suddenly empowered with great abilities but are at the same time expected to deal with great challenges and shoulder enormous responsibilities. They are aided by more mature allies but ultimately they shoulder the burden alone. The action is fast paced and almost non stop with frequent changes of locale both in the familiar mundane world and a fantasy world. Much use is made of ancient myths and legends (in the present case Egyptian) which are contrasted sharply with and integrated curiously into modern times. The latter is a primary source of the book's humor.There are a few things that a prospective reader should be aware of. First, the book is the second of a three volume series; they should be read in order for maximum enjoyment and the least confusion. None of Riordan's series can be jumped into at any point. Second, Riordan in this series changes points of view between siblings Carter and Sadie every two chapters. It can be a little difficult to climb out of one character's head and into another if reading for extended periods. Third, like all Riordan books the present book is heavily (and ingeniously) plotted so there is more than a little demand on the reader's attention; read at least a chapter or two at a sitting.Highly recommended. Adults and children alike can enjoy this series.

As a huge fan of Percy Jackson, I was so excited to continue the adventure with The Heroes of Olympus. After reading this book, the first in the series, I'm neither satisfied nor disappointed. It was nice to dive back in to the world of Camp Half-Blood but I just couldn't get too involved with the new characters like I did with Percy and his crew. I also purchased the second book to try and get more into it, that book will determine whether I continue the series or not.As for if I would recommend this book, I'd say it's worth a try. :-)

I love a good book. My favorites are usually modern day stories about normal people with a little bit of magic thrown in to make it interesting. I originally started reading the Percy Jackson series because my granddaughter liked the movie. So I bought her the series and we read at least a chapter or two every time we spend a few hours together. My girl does most of the reading and I sort of explain the parts or words she doesn't understand. We've almost finished all of the Percy Jackson series. And I must confess, since I read just a bit faster, I've moved onto the Lost Hero series. It started a bit slower than the other books. But as I read the story I found myself wondering how it was going to play out. Greek mythology is just as fascinating as Roman mythology. I like that they're being mixed together and how these series are overlapping. The message I see in both series is one of honesty, and friendship and trust. The concept of right and wrong should be installed into young people at an early age. Age appropriate explanations of actions and consequences. These books have helped my granddaughter, who is just about 8 years old, to learn to think about what will happen once she has said or done something. I'm thankful there are stories that have captured her interest and attention. She is also beginning to understand that the lessons these books are helping her to learn will help her throughout her life!! That is the best compliment I can give to any author and his/her stories.

Rick Riordan starts another great story! I am a great fan of Percy Jackson, and was excited to see a new series. The author introduces new characters but has not changed his style of getting you to know and care about them, until they become real people to the reader. Too many dismiss books nowadays as copies or derivatives of older well known works. In that light , everything can be considered a copy of something else. I always approach a book or series to see if it can grab my attention and invest me in the story or characters. Rick Riordan has not disappointed me yet.

I really like Rick Riordan's books, starting with Percy Jackson series. I like that he uses mythology and humour in his books. I have always loved mythology and this is a great series to get my sons reading. In fact, it was my oldest son and my sister who got me into Riordan's books.This is the second book of the Kane's Series/Egyptian Mythology. This is written in first person from each sibling's point of view (POV). Each chapter is a different POV. Some writers have a hard time writing different voices for their characters and when they try this the characters sound the same. However, Riordan does a good job of keeping Sadie and Carter's voice distinct.I bought this one to replace the one that disappeared. It has been awhile since I read the Kane Series.

I took this book with me to my hometown for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it so much.... I have to get another copy. The photographs are well done and really help you understand how to shape the pasta. The author clearly explains the steps to make great dough and then shape it. We were easily able to make the milk, tomato, and leafy green (we used frozen spinach) dough. My daughters skipped to the advanced techniques of "painting pasta with pasta" and we ended up with some interesting, yet tasty designs. I have been making pasta off and on for a few years now and I was amazed at how helpful the book was. I learned many techniques that have improved my pasta making (and explain some of my previous failures) and because of the rainbow colors - everyone is so excited to participate, clean up, and eat pasta!

It's been a long time since I read a nonfiction book this captivating. The author's personality really shines through and draws you deeper into the beautiful world of pasta. I can't wait to start making recipes from this glorious, photo-filled book! Also, in case there were any questions, Linda is hilarious. Here's my favorite excerpt:"Close your eyes, open your mouth just a tad, and imagine that a mermaid has placed her breast just within reach of your tongue. Give it a healthy lick -- boy, girl, gay, straight, don't tell me you wouldn't slurp a mermaid if you had the chance -- and now open your eyes and salt your water to taste just like the puckery protuberance of that mythical maiden. I mean, I could have said salty like the sea, but something tells me you'll remember this rule of breast best."Captivating, beautiful, and informational, what's not to love? I learned a lot about both technique and Italian pasta culture as I devoured this book in a day of delighted reading. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have been waiting for this book for months and it has met and surpassed my expectations! Being somewhat of a novice pasta maker myself... Linda's recipes are easy to follow and she gives so much practical advice mixed with a great sense of humor!! I have read every page and several sections repeatedly!! My first recipe was Beet-Blueberry pasta made into squash ravioli with brown butter sage sauce for a Halloween season treat. My family raved about it for days! I can't wait to share more recipes with my extended family and try more at home. As an Italian and an art teacher...this book bridges my two passions of art and cooking!!! Thank you for all of the inspiration!

This book is amazing, it's both accessible and aspirational. If you've never made a noodle in your life or if you do it like it's your job (even if it is your job!) there is something for everyone. The photos are incredible and the explanations are thoughtful and well written. There is no better way to become a master pasta maker!Its perfect for all skill levels, it's going to make an incredible hostess gift for anyone I visit during the holidays!

My only wish would have been that the pages were glossier so they would be easy to wipe off when using in the kitchen cooking. BUT with that said....WOW!! It is a beautiful book from cover to cover!! I love how it is her story as well as the photos and how she makes it. Not to mention she is a local gal who I can take classes from. WINNER WINNER on all facets for me!And what about the price? While the obvious selling point is the absolutely stunning colorful pasta...don't let that fool you. This is DELCIOUS pasta! Linda's recipes show a deft sophistication in technique and flavor that you will be able to master and enjoy! Makingyour own filled pasta is incredibly satisfying and much easier than you think. In no time you will be making insanely color pasta in a multitude of shapes and wondering what took you so long to start down this path!

Really love everything about this book--Linda's colorful pasta creations, the different tools, blurbs about the recipes, some step-by-step instructions for some of the harder creations, and fascinating anecdotes. I'll definitely be cooking my way through this book. I already ordered butterfly pea flowers (from Amazon, naturally)! You'll have to read the book to find out what those are for. :) Fantastic book, amazing writer. 5 stars.

This book is the war as viewed by the Russian soldier. If you are looking for a sniper story like that of USMC Carlos Hathcock, this is not the book. The sniping is more an afterthought. I recommend this book. You will understand why Russia hated the Germans so much. It was lclear that the soldiers were internally motivated to drive the Germans out of Leningrad. The German Army brought horrific hardship on the civilians. Amazing stories of death and suffering. However, the closeness of toughened soldiers and their care for each other and the civilians comes through the story. The caring for you friend, male or female, could end in a moment by a German sniper bullet. Nonetheless, when their officers called to attack, there was no hestitation. It was all about driving the Germans from mother Russia.

Red Sniper on the Eastern Front is OK, but not quit what I expected. After reading Sniper on the Eastern Front -The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, which was superbly written about a German sniper in World War II, I had high hopes for this Red Sniper on the Eastern Front. To put it simply, this book left a little to be desired after reading the ladder. However, I will say it had interesting aspects and another point of view. It seemed to lack the plethora of details that the Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger provided. I managed to complete reading the book, however I have not had any desire to go back and re-read it as I have the Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, several times. I have a feeling the author capitalized on the name from the popularity of Alleberger's book.

Nice recounting of the victories and tragedies of the resistance to Operation Barbarossa at Stalingrad. The author summons imagery and context to his memoir in a way that most sniper tales do not. Critics of his writing must remember that this is a translation from Russian, and is occasionally too literal. It does end abruptly, as though the author died of heart failure before the final chapter. But a satisfying read nevertheless.

Easily one of the best WW2 books I've had the privilege to read. Admittedly I measure these books less for grammar than the stories and details of battle, though this book was pretty solid. I only wish it had not ended so abruptly, and that we could have discovered the rest of the painful, yet triumphant story. Great information about the life of the Red Army soldiers and the Russian people. These people were likely more warm and caring towards their Comrades than we give credit for, though they lived a brutal existence with the cold climate and poor conditions. Having read a number of both German and Russian books, they each point the finger at horrific atrocities committed by the other. War is well, and maybe both dictators should have planned to stay home and not gone to war. That wasn't in the script, but as a result we have these stories from real survivors. And what stories they are.

Yosef Pilyushin is a remarkable man with an unforgettable story. He bares his soul in this fascinating book - a memorable journey through years of brutal combat in unforgiving conditions facing a relentless foe, all the while highlighting every emotion - from ecstatic joy to gut wrenching grief. I have read many war time memoirs - but this is one of the few that definitely stands out.In some ways, his story is truly inspiring - to go through all he did: combat, unthinkable personal tragedies, witnessing suffering on a mass scale in a blockaded, starving city which counted it's toll in the millions, enduring harsh privations on a regular basis; all the while living with the constant fear of death at a moments notice...... to endure all that and still survive!The book is filled with colourful characters! And the writing style pulls you in - you start identifying the characters when they are mentioned again later in the book. I shared in their joys and grieved over their losses.That's the other amazing quality of this work - the very personal touch. Mr. Pilyushin certainly lost loved ones in that terrible war. Not just his personal family, but many members of his 'frontline family' as well. The book is so engrossing that you identify closely with those fellow veterans - to the point that you can feel the grief and pain he goes through with each devastating loss.One other interesting aspect of this book is that it is nigh-completely devoid of "Party Propaganda." There are no paeans to the Communist Party or hero worship of Stalin or STAVKA. Yes, the enemy is mostly "fascists" and often "Germans" - but given the circumstances, it doesn't seem inappropriate. No, the tone of the book is very personal and it ties into the relationship with the civilian population as well.My one gripe is that I thought the ending was a little abrupt and unsatisfactory. I would've liked to know what Mr. Pilyushin is up to these days, or how he fared post-war or how he passed away etc.This book is one for the archives. It deserves to be re-read.

Gripping, heartbreaking story about one man's personal tragedies amidst all the greater horror that occurred during the 900-day siege. Yosef was an older man when the war started and he penned his memoirs more than a decade after the close of hostilities, so his perspective about the relationships around him are more mature than many of the "trench stories" by 19-year-olds. It does cover much of his day-to-day experiences and has plenty of combat in it. However, what sets this apart is the subplot of his platonic love for a female sniper. Their relationship is downright Shakespearean.I almost gave this 4 stars because the book ends abruptly with many unanswered questions, but it's told so well, with so much life that I had to give it 5.

It is a very strong account of a brutal fight in the 3 year siege of Leningrad. The author survives awful woulds & trauma defending his city and sees the turn of the tide and the offensive gained by the Soviet Union in 1944.

This book is a very good book for kids. it is a social studies book it teaches kids about who barack obama is is how he became president.

Both of my elementary school aged daughters love the Who Is/Who Was series of books. They are all written well, educational and interesting. I even read them! You really can't go wrong with any of these books!

Obama is nice. But this book is kinda crappy. I read some of it when I got it. The only reason I bought it though is because the school issued it to my son, and he lost it. So I needed to replace it.

A good thing I noticed when reading this also is that I am already doing a couple of the things Damon suggests and they do work and it helped to know I am going in the right direction.

I spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out how to write my first ever review for any book in the most perfect way. Itâ€™s a mental struggle even to write a simple review without thinking too much:) Perfectionism is an addiction that I let myself succumb to. Of all things in life that can suck oneâ€™s happiness I think â€˜perfectionismâ€™ is the most stealthy one. There are so many things out there to blame for unhappiness and even when you blame yourself for it imagine how difficult it is to accept that you have fallen to your own self beliefs.This is a great book for someone who is struggling in life because of perfectionism. Even for others there are useful things to know. It doesnâ€™t take a lot time to go through the book and this short amount of time would definitely be a time well spent for everyone.This book doesnâ€™t cover a lot of theory or about psychological triggers for perfectionism. However there are references to relevant articles and studies. This is a very short book even so it took a very short time to connect with myself. I think this would be the case with you especially if you are a perfectionist. I could immediately connect to the personal experiences shared by Damon since thatâ€™s exactly how perfectionism affects me and also for the reason that my perfectionism doesnâ€™t allow me to be challenged by others easily. I find it very important to learn lessons from someone who has walked the same path in which I am travelling now.I could easily acknowledge the â€œ12 negative impacts of perfectionismâ€ described in part one of this book. It was like someone describing my current experiences in life. Part two of the book helps to evaluate the severity of perfectionism in oneâ€™s life. I scored full marks on the pop quiz at the end of the chapter. Let me know if you beat me on that ;)The third and final part of the book is all about action where Damon lists 12 ideas to overcome perfectionism. Again these ideas are covered in very few pages and is to the point. You could clearly see that the focus is on getting someone to start executing them without spend too much time on reading a lot more.I have been following some of the ideas in the last few weeks and have seen a great impact already. Just reading the book has reduced my level of self-criticism. By following few of the ideas I have been able to avoid triggers that let my â€˜perfectionist inner criticâ€™ to take control of me. I also have been able to realize when I am under the influence of perfectionist thoughts and pull myself back on track. The same situation few months back would have carried me onto a runaway train. I am slowly working on following the other ideas too and would recommend everyone to give them a try. I know itâ€™s a tough road ahead for us but I am sure Damon has more books in line to revitalize us down the road. Good luck everyone!Thanks Damon for this book. I have gotten a taste of the joy of imperfection and it is a soothing experience.

Very comprehensive content! The book is written straight to the point and practical exercises / solutions are included. I strongly recommend this book, whether you may need a guide for self improvement or just look for a reference for human studies.

In my opinion, this is one of the best books on perfectionism that I have read. Easy read with concrete examples and exercises that you can practice to work through to slowly rid yourself of a perfectionistic mindset. I believe that it is worth reading multiple times.

This book was extremely helpful to me. It helped me to see my perfectionism for what it is...a hinderance to accomplishing more, as well as a hinderance to experiencing freedom and joy in life.

I have learned that I am not a perfectionist as defined by this author, not at all. I always thought I was, but maybe I am "just" OCD. I feel so badly for anyone who meets this author's definition as life sure would be hell and an endless nightmare. Admitting that I am not a perfectionist, that ends up really not qualifying me to leave feedback on the suggested interventions, but I will anyway from my non perfectionist position. If one were a perfectionist, I would think it would take a tremendous amount of effort and time for the suggested interventions to work, and likely not even then. The mindset would be deep and a few techniques and exercises wouldn't cut it. Interestingly, there are numerous grammatical errors and I can't help but wonder if they were done on purpose to make a point.

Doesnt offer much in terms of guidance. Just call it a book fr the wicked.

I am not a Satanist, but a Non-theistic Pagan who was curious about the life Anton Szander LaVey and how Satanism became the atheistic religion it is today. I watched his old interviews on YouTube and he seemed like a great intelligent man. After reading this book, I feel like I grown to know what he was all about thanks to his late wife Blanche Barton and others who knew him during his life. I respect Anton Szander LaVey more standing up for what he believed and disbelieved him without conforming to a society that was and still is heavily monotheistic Abrahamic religious oriented in the western world...while finding appreciation and acceptance to both human nature and human sexuality without treating it like it is sinful...or something to repress and be ashamed of to live honestly. You don't have to be part of any ideology to recognize how important that is to live a life that is liberating and encouraging to seek knowledge wherever it leads to than settle for religious faith. I have read the "Satanic Bible" and have other books I have yet to read after ordering them on Amazon. I may not believe in the ritual aspects in Satanism, but believe in most of the philosophy. I recommend people with a open-minded to buy and read this book. ðŸ˜Š

I owned the first edition of this book when it originally came out. So when I heard that an expanded and updated edition was in the works, I anxiously awaited its release. This is a very enjoyable and informative read for those interested in learning about Anton LaVey from one who knew him better than anyone.

I appreciate the practicality and directness of this writing. We are given passenger side seats on a tour of a brilliant human who dared open the world up to freedom and self reliance. Thank you for sharing this part of your experience with us.

I own the first version of this book. I love how the book picks up and tells the story of what happened in LeVays life up until his death.

First off, I am a Christian. Why would I order much less read this book? Well, I've always believed you need to know the enemy. Plus, being a psychoanalyst I am extremely curious about people and their upbringing....their history. All I ever heard were rumors and such. But, if you want to know the truth then this is a must read. Especially for parents. These satanist mean business and they are not the kind wearing black with pentagrams or "witches" with potions, spells, or what have you. These real satanist have no intention of being found out. Their influence and reach is shocking. I could write on and on. Key word to remember here is they seem to prefer subtlety to move about in all walks of life. The book will keep you mesmerized and the curtain will be moved to knowledge of their beliefs. Anton is a very interesting person. And as he grew older he seemed to have distilled his beliefs and walked the walk. Fascinating read. Sometimes i found it frightening; however, the most disturbing thing is just how many everyday people are practicing satanist AND don't even know it! Highly recommended read for those strong in their Christian faith.
