Ok its obvious to anyone living in the US these days that we live under a corrupt, anti democratic oligarchy that is literally destroying whole nations to make a few fat cats rich, but most people don't know what to do about it except write letters or emails and march and protest. Most think nothing can be done about it, and they are right. The Anti Federalists saw this disaster coming in 1787 and tried to stop it but failed. They knew the bulk of the proposed Federalist Constitution was viciously anti democratic, but they failed because they didn't propose alternative revisions. They had also prior to this failed to revise the Articles of Confederation. The main opposition were the less affluent, and western farmers and they were out shouted in the ratification debates. The real problem was the country was too big to permit democracy then as now. An alternative that was discussed was to redraw state boundaries to make the states more equal, but small was not beautiful. Everyone wanted a large America,as large as the 13 states, and looked forward to an American continent. Size mattered back then.

Lovely books (I ordered both volumes). Pages are a joy to handle. As they say, very high production values. I knocked a star off since the books are an abbreviated collection of the Federalist and Anti Federalist Papers. I wanted a complete set and the advertising for the two volumes, Parts One and Two, left me thinking that I would be getting the full set of the papers. I agonized over returning them. In the end I'm keeping them as they are physically so nice and there is also a good collection of auxiliary papers that help to put the included material in context. It kills me that these are an "Essentials" collection and not a full collection. Buyer beware.

Moreover it should be mandatory study in the later years of school. This is the owners manual for a free nation. In segments of a few pages each and using the vernacular and idiom of the day it is easy to picture in your mind how men of intelligence and concern for the future worried every turn of phrase or idea proposed by this nations framing documents. The books themselves are beautifully bound. The paper is light yet rugged and the print is easier on the eyes than it first seemed it would be. Interestingly they also have a small durable ribbon bound into the binding with which to keep your place. The Appendix contains text of the Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution with Amendments. There are also biographical notes so you have some idea of the nature of these people, and a concise timeline of what occurred when and where.I highly recommend both books part one and part two.

...especially if they are elected officials. There was considerable controversy that surrounded the Constitution, and the Federalists and Anti-Federalists went at it hammer and tongs in the social media of the day--letters, newspapers and broadsheets.Pity most Americans are completely ignorant of the issues that are discussed in this book, especially our elected and appointed Leaders in Washington (based on what they say and do, not what they claim).

Great read

We should all be reading these two books to remind us of how and why this Nation was formed. What we hear spouted on TV is not the truth many times.

Absorbing collection of primary documents. I'm learning a thing or two from this, and I like that.

Fantastic reading! Can't put it down once I get started...amazing resource...authoritative series...nicely done!
