I really liked the short story format. It kept me interested throughout the novel.Right from the beginning the club tossing narrative really hit home because I had a similar incident as a youngster. The great news is that I am in my late 50’s and have never thrown a club since that valuable learning experience.I also found myself jumping out of the book to look up golf courses, architects, players, tournaments and other subjects James Dodson mentions in his narrative. A wonderful indirect and unexpected education.The chapter toward the end of the book about seeing Arnold Palmer for the last time was tearfully heartwarming. I personally think about him every time I have an ice tea/lemonade. Arnold is so missed...Overall, a terrific work. I just wish the author would have achieved his bucket list hole-in-one. Looking forward to this chapter addendum!

While writing about them, he is living the dream of students of the game everywhere. There are additional insights about Arnold Palmer, Peggy Kirk Bell, architects and amateurs in all walks of life - all delivered from the standpoint of friend that can't believe their good fortune to be in the presence. Funny stories, moving stories, inspirational stories. If you can't get enough of golf - the game, the people and the venues - you've got to get this book.
My husband is the golfer...not me. After reading the information about the book, I decided he would enjoy reading it. I haven’t seen him read a book that fast in a long time. He really enjoyed it.
This is basically a collection of short stories that stoke or reawaken a golfer's love of the game. The stories chronicle the author's life and describe his full circle in life and golf. Beautifully written and touching.
James Dodson captures the essence of life through his love affair with golf. Those of us who only caddied or walked courses occasionally can admire the game and the lessons learned through the lens of Dodson. He clearly was fortunate to have made his vocation his avocation; a feat few can claim.Dodson's style of writing rhythmically details run-ins with many of golf's greatest and best known, such as Donald Trump. It is uncanny how did Jim Dodson can turn a simple golf story into fine literature. Throughout this book he does it again and again and again. Frequently, the stories are so touching, I just have to sit back and quietly breathe in the experience. Beyond that, few people in the world of golf know the game as well as Jim does. I believe that in this Arena, Jim Dodson is absolutely the real deal.
I enjoyed every page of this great golf book. There were a lot of references to Pinehurst ,one of my favorite towns, and I could relate to a lot of them. James Dodson hit another good golf shot.
Before I read this book I did not know the name James Dodson. After reading it Iï¸ sincerely wish he was my good friend. His touching stories of friendship, shared rounds of golf, life truths and travels had my eyes watering. Very touching. Now on to more Jim Dodson books!
