You're new, but one of your duties is to renovate or maintain a building that is old--perhaps one hundred or more years old. Of course you should engage professionals for the work, but where do you start and how do you evaluate what needs to be done and how well they do it? That's the position I found myself in last year. My new job here in the Midwest (I was born and bred in the Pacific Northwest, where truly old buildings are as rare as sunny days) includes custody of a 150-year-old historic home and renovation of an equally old one-room schoolhouse. While I have access to several preservation experts--many times offering conflicting opinions--I am the project manager. Since my experience has been entirely in new construction, Robert Young's book has been a lifesaver for me. This is no Preservation for Dummies--it's a truly informative volume that covers all aspects of historic preservation (process, materials, styles, systems) and offers "best practices" as well as bibliographies for further reading on each aspect. If you are new to preservation, need a refresher or just want an authoritative source for occasional reference, then buy this book.

Book was as expected.

Purchased as a text for a technology class. This is a very good overview of the subject and gives a good grounding when combined with other sources.

Easy to read and well composed. Robert Young is well versed and has always been champion for preserving historically important homes. He lead by example. His personal home is one of the case studies listed.

NICE BOOK

I had to have this for a Master's Class. I think that it is just too basic for this level, but probably a little too much for high-school, unless it is for a specialized class. Did I learn anything? Yes, one or two things, but honestly, I stopped studying when I realized how simplistic it was and just read the first and last paragraph of each chapter. Shhh don't tell!

Professor Young has created a comprehensive overview of the the process of preserving historic buildings, and an invaluable guide to the materials used, their decay processes and the methods used in their repair and maintenance. The bibliographies alone are worth the cost of this publication.

My husband was given a copy of this book and told me, "You've got to read this." As the author clarifies, the book doesn't actually contain secrets, just clarification of original Bible text and of grape horticulture that most people don't understand. If you've ever worried about being "cut off" from the vine, you'll want to read this. I ordered three more of these books to share with three different groups of friends. The author writes about how to "abide in the vine," and, after many years of procrastinating, I'm finally keeping a spiritual journal. You'll probably find it enlightening, and, perhaps, it will be life-changing. If you're looking for even more reasons to praise God and find joy in the Lord, you'll find them in this book. I highly recommend SECRETS OF THE VINE.

This book is so very helpful and 'raises the bar' on understanding the final teachings of Jesusto his Disciples while standing in a vineyard the night before his betrayal and murder by thecorrupt politicians of those times.I have a whole new understanding of the analogies of being fruitful and multiplying theword of GOD in my life. The author is clear, concise, and very readable. He has the giftof leaving out his EGO, and speaking the Truth from his Soul. That is rare among writers inthe religious genre, and I applaud Dr. Wilkinson for his humility and devotion to servingJesus and GOD. Blessings and Peace.

An easy book to read, with a cup of coffee in hand, on a relaxing afternoon.I have read through John15 countless times, with most of the time skimming through the contents with no deep pondering. By reading this book, it shows what I have been missing all along. It focuses on the vines (Jesus), the branches (us), vinedresser (God) and the resulting grapes of harvest, which forms the main essence of John 15:1-8. It helps me to look at a totally new perspective, as seen from a vintner, and the correlation to the biblical verses.For the vineyard to produce, the branches (us) have to respond to the attentions of the vinedresser (God). In reality, all branches do not respond alike as each branch is unique. Thus when harvest arrives, each likewise will produce a different-sized crop.Fruits, oft mentioned in the Bible, represent good works such as thoughts, attitudes, actions, etc. Through which, it glorifies God. Inner fruit arises when you allow God to nurture in you a new Christ-like quality. On the other hand, outward fruit is when you allow God to work through us to bring him glory, such as sharing our faith.This book elaborates on the 4 distinct and different levels of fruit bearing.[1] No fruits: Involves discipliningJohn 15:2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruits He takes away.This verse seems to be interpreted commonly as, if one does not bear any fruit, his or her walk with Christ is questionable. This arises due to mis-selection of the correct word. Most bibles render (NIV, NLT, KJV, etc) the Greek word "airo" as "take away" or "cut off", which is an unfortunate interpretation, giving readers a feeling of gloom. A much clearer and better translation would be "take up" or "lift up".It then relates the behavior of new branches or vines. New branches have a natural tendency to trail down and grow along the ground. Growing along the ground, the leaves get into contact with dust. With rain, comes mud and mildew, ending in sickness and diseases. Instead of cutting these away, the vinedresser will actually "lift this" up, wash and wrap around the trellis or tie them up.Likewise when branches (us) fall into dirt, God does not throw them away or abandon them, instead He painstakingly lifts them up, cleans them to help them to flourish.1st secret of the vineIf your life consistently bears no fruit, God will intervene to discipline and guide you.Disciplining and guidance is God's proactive answer to move us out of barrenness towards fruitfulness.[2] Fruits: Involves early pruningJohn 15:2 Every branch that bears fruit He prunes that it may bear more fruits.Because of the grape's tendency to grow so vigorously, a lot of wood must be cut away (pruning). Grape vines could become so dense that the sun cannot reach into areas where fruits should be forming. Thus, at this stage, pruning is the vinedresser's most important task to ensure a bountiful harvest.The vinedresser's secret for more is less, through pruning.During such times, preoccupations and priorities in our lives, whilst not wrong, keep us away from more significant ministry of God. There is a need to reduce our lower priority commitments in order to make room for even greater abundance for God.When certain events happen, questions may arise whether is disciplining or pruning being involved. The book provides a guideline and comparison to discern pruning from disciplining.2nd secret of the vineIf your life bears some fruit, God will intervene to prune you.[3] More fruits: Involves mature pruning, i.e total submissionThe vines' ability to produce growth increases each year, but without intensive pruning, the plant weakens and its crop will tend to diminish. Mature branches must be pruned hard in order to achieve maximum yields.Early pruning is mostly about your outward activities and priorities, while mature pruning is about your values, personal identity and involves testing of your faith.Our faith in general could be tested in 4 key areas(i) People we love the most(ii) Our right to know why God does what He does, i.e giving up self-control(iii) Our love for monies and possessions(iv) Sources of our significancesBruce related his own experience of when God asked him to give up the ministry of Walk Through The Bible, his life's dream. After much struggle, he chose and obeyed God. And amazingly, when he chose to obey God, God blessed the ministry in ways beyond his imagination. Therefore, in order to reach the next level of abundance, we have to completely give back to God what He himself had given us in the first place, trusting only in Him for what would happen next. This is about total submission.[4] Much fruits: Involves self-initiated abidingAt this stage, our lives are overflowing with grapes but yet we can feel frustrated, defeated and are in danger of losing the harvest for a lifetime (eg known cases of famous pastors involved in extramarital affairs, etc). We throw even more energy into work, hoping to recapture former fulfillment. And the Walk with Him suffers.Even though we have a good amount of fruits, and are not being "lifted up" in discipline or being pruned, we are actually caught in 2 opposing tensions - increasing desire to produce an even better yield and decreasing fulfillment in the fruits you are already producing.With discipline taken in order to remove sins and with pruning in order to change priorities, the vinedresser is the initiator. Here, with abiding in Him, we exchange roles and will become the initiator instead.3rd secret of the vineIf your life bears a lot of fruits, God will invite you to abide more deeply with Him.Abiding starts with visible spiritual disciplines such as bible reading and prayers. Despite the fame and fortune he achieved as an entertainer, Groucho Marx always longed to be a writer.And thanks to a lifetime of reading, he became a writer and a damned good one. He's quick to correct any impression the reader might have that this book is another "as-told-to" celebrity memoir. With typical self-deprecating bravado, he brags that, " every word of this stringy, ill-written farrago is being sweated out by me."It's far from ill-written. Instead it's a wonderfully readable autobiography and it tells his version of the amazing journey of the Marx brothers from a New York tenement to Beverly Hills mansions. They were an "over-night" sensation in the sense that they burst into prominence after years of making a precarious, painful living in small-time vaudeville. Once they played the Palace in New York city (ultimate venue for vaudeville performers), they went on to Broadway productions, and then into the movies that would make them a household word. When television eroded the popularity of movies, the versatile Groucho exploited his quick wit to become a successful TV host.When this book was published in 1959, Marx was approaching 70 and living with his third wife Eden and with Melinda, the daughter of his second marriage. There are funny stories about Melinda, portraying him as a loving, if grumpy father. Eden is praised as a "beauty" and very little else is said about her. In a few more years, that marriage would go the way of the first two and his relationship with Melinda would become as strained as his relationships with his older children.He tells his life story in a series of amusing anecdotes that pretty much ignore the hardships his family experienced. He says in his introduction that he believes it to be impossible to write a truly honest autobiography and warns his readers not to expect one. The weakness of this book is not that he's dishonest, but that he reveals almost nothing of himself to his readers.We learn nothing meaningful about his relationships with his parents or siblings. His first two marriages are ignored. There are funny stories about his son Arthur Marx, but his older daughter Marion is never mentioned. Typically, he dedicates the book, not to his parents, wife, or children, but to six writers who inspired him. He seems to be saying, "My private life is none of your business." A legitimate attitude, but a strange one in a man who's writing his autobiography.You finish this book having enjoyed lots of belly laughs. You marvel at Groucho's skill at telling amusing stories. You feel privileged to have a peek into the fascinating, almost unbelievable world that was the entertainment industry in the first half of the 20th century.You meet some incredible people, but you never really meet the man who wrote the book. He uses laughter to hide his emotions. His son later wrote that his father consistently used jokes to maintain an emotional distance from his wives and children. A very, very funny man, but not one you want to live with. As entertainment, this is a fine book. I wish that this sensitive, intelligent man had opened up his heart, but apparently he couldn't. That was the great tragedy of his life.

Without even trying, Groucho Marx was a very funny man. He was irreverent and cutting, but never malicious. You should read his letter to Warner Brothers when they sent him a 'cease and desist' letter about the movie Night in Casablanca. If you are looking for a non-autobiography autobiography, this is it. He constantly tries to avoid talking about his personal life, but the whole book is clearly about his personal life. There just aren't any like him left out there anymore.

This wonderful autobiography of Groucho Marx that will leave you laughing from start to finish. It is very thought provoking and timeless in nature despite the many pop and historic references. Some you will probably not understand because pop culture has long since forgotten them. The chapter describing the time leading up to the stock market crash is both remarkably insightful and comedic. It is one great read.

More oblique humor, much less direct sense of the person. I liked "Harpo Speaks" much more. Groucho and Me does report what author considers some facts of his early natal family, early entertainment, vaudeville circuit, movies, celebrity, but he's miserly on him as a personâ€”except what reader infers by the lack of such content.

Despite many infuriating typos, particularly in the first ten pages, this was a fun book to read. The humor still shines through. It is more of a memoir than an autobiography, though. Itâ€™s not a comprehensive account of his life.

Odd that a book written by someone I consider the Funniest Man In The World, my single favourite comedian of all time, should be such a disappointment. Published in 1959 at the height of his popularity on the comedy-quiz radio and TV program You Bet Your Life, this is more of an anti-autobiography, Groucho Marx characteristically doing his anarchic thing by telling only briefly of his youth and early stage successes in vaudeville and on Broadway and then veering off constantly (and unsteadily) into meditations on love, sex, marriage, Hollywood and even the poor souls at the publishing company who actually expect him to write a "straight" account of himself, which he of course refuses to do.Groucho Marx, it's been said, had a natural inborn greatness that defied analysis (but I'll still try!). There was something about his silly walk, his nasal whine, his defiance, his sudden punning broadsides, and sheer anarchic presence that just was Funny Incarnate. He is famous for a long stream of clever, provocative one-liners and for just saying such random, improvisational things onstage as "Pardon me while I have a strange interlude", or, "You're very fortunate the Theatre Guild isn't putting this on. And so is the Guild".Just looking at those isolated lines in an Amazon.com review you already see it; this is a type of comedy that's probably not so good on paper.Dick Cavett always says Groucho was "a great writer", but I disagree. I think Cavett's appraisal is colored by his personal fondness for his old friend, the irresistibly playful and sneaky sound of Groucho's voice, and this is what Cavett really cherishes and misses. I believe a great deal of what made Groucho funny was thus performance; unlike Peter Cook, Woody Allen, Monty Python, or Bob & Ray, whose material was funny just to read. Groucho and the Marx Brothers benefitted enormously from their writers, George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind, S. J. Perelman, Arthur Sheekman, Nat Perrin, etc. Basically they provided the structure and the brothers would polish and embellish. It's possible that Groucho's, dare I say it, shortcomings, are less noticeable in the Marx Brothers' many wonderful movies; flanked as he was by brother Chico's malapropisms, illogic, and crazy piano playing, plus Harpo's madcap pantomime and harp playing. The Marx Brothers as a unit are as strong and entertaining a comedy team as I could possibly imagine. Their originality and talent remain stunning, their mark on comedy history of course indelible. But on his own, Groucho always seemed too meandering, which is what Steve Allen might have been getting at (in his book Funny People's chapter on Groucho) about not considering Groucho's own "act" as being very strong. There is some truth to it; after the Marx Brothers amicably broke up Groucho never even tried to be a regular stand-up comic in nightclubs, which was wise. He was clearly at his very best in impromptu conversation, something his producers on You Bet Your Life seemed to know better than Groucho himself.Ultimately he's a good writer because he's charming. The reason he isn't a great writer is his disregard of structure. That's why The GrouchoPhile, his later autobiography, is so much better; the structure. And, tellingly, it was written by Groucho and Someone Else.Groucho and Me, by contrast, is good but not great. Still, I love and cherish my 1960 paperback copy of it...because it's got that iconic Groucho Marx rolled-eye, chin-on-fist-holding-cigar-pose and a facsimile of his signature on the cover. Pathetic fan-boy that I am. â˜º

Recipes represented in here are so great because they feature ingredients and flavors that are always appealing. I may enjoy fancy food in a fancy restaurant from time to time but I have no interest in cooking this kind of food at home. This cookbook offers simple recipes that burst with flavors and they are quick and easy to prepare too. The secret is â€“ these recipes are approachable no matter the cooking skills you have, and they are quick, thatâ€™s why the cookbook is suitable for all the working people who wish to keep themselves healthy and satisfied. This is the real food, this is the way everyone is supposed to cook and eat, and I donâ€™t mean the recipes, I mean the vegetarian lifestyle.

In truth, I never cooked properly before I decided to go vegan, and this cookbook has helped me a lot in my vegan endeavor. I know very little about vegan cooking, but these recipes are easy enough to practice them every now and then to stay afloat during the busy working days. Recipes are informative and accurate, despite the occasional typos and misspellings. Also, I would love to see at least some photos of the finished dishes but there are none here â€“ probably thatâ€™s why the price is so low. I believe food should be nutritive at first and then fun, so this cookbook absolutely satisfies the needs I have.

I feel like this cookbook makes the vegetarian cooking a little more fun, and it's not just another boring cookbook, telling you what to do. It's a real friend to help and guide you in the kitchen through the doubts and issues you have with your vegetarian diet. For vegans who are beginners with cooking and the slow cooker too, this cookbook would be fabulous. Not only the recipes are easy to make, but they are also super fast too, and the food is absolutely delicious. I've made probably 10 to 12 % of the recipes so far, and not a single one was disappointing.

There are vegan Slow Cooker breakfast recipes, side dish recipes, snack and appetizer recipes, main course recipes, dessert recipes. All these recipes include the information about preparation time, cooking time, servings and nutrition. All instructions are very detailed and helpful. I have tried some recipes of this cookbook and all my dishes were delicious. I liked this book and I' m glad to have it on my Kindle to use when I need it. I highly recommend this cookbook for those who want to eat healthy and tasty meal.

The Chinese tofu and veggies recipe is phenomenal â€“ so easy and pleasing. I rented a ton of vegan cookbooks previously to the purchase of this one but now Iâ€™m going to give them back because now I have everything I need to keep me inspired and well-fed for a long time from now. If you want to spend a little more time cooking, you can always edit the recipe and add some kind of personal touch â€“ something to be recognizable whenever you cook it. I cut out a lot of oil and things still cook just fine for me â€“ I couldnâ€™t be more satisfied for now.

You gotta love this cookbook. First, it's a whole lot recipes in here, for anything you want, from soups to curries and so on. Then, everything is cooked in the crockpot, so its ridiculously easy and healthy at the same time, since you aren't frying and using too much oil. And finally, these vegan meals are so delicious!Yup, there are some misspellings, and no pics, but instead you get a nice chunk of ideas for your dinners for the rest of 2018. I think it's worth the deal.

To see them gone into disrepair beyond hope is sad, but the history and eeriness is fascinating.Bulit risks life and limb documenting these places, as the roof is collapsing right over the camera in some photographs. Got this book personally from David (the author) and it is fantastic. He is a great photographer so you get more than just stories. Definitely a beautiful book you don't hide away in your book shelf.

This book illustrates drills for beginnersall the way to ones for the advanced tennis player.They reinforce the best ways to utilizethe angles of the court hitting away from the middle.There are also live ball drills to simulate match plays. This helps prepare playerfor tournaments.

As a high school tennis coach, I use the book often. Some of the drills are difficult to pull off with the level of players on our team, but most are quite useful.

This book came in handy for coaching my tennis team. I was able to update information on tennis and come up with some great drills for practice.

The book is pretty dry. There is no order in the way the drills are explained, for instance what the purpose of the drill is.

Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills. Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills. Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK.In my case, I am a former varsity college tennis player still hitting at the NTRP 4.5 level with a technical orientation to the game. I actually love challenging singles drills. Within this book, I actually found only 8 drills (3% of total drills) useful. But, these 8 drills include some of the most physically and technically challenging drills I ever came across. The most extreme drill is the one actually portrayed on the cover page. Frankly, if it was not for this book, I did not think this drill was possible. This is because it is composed of shots that are typically outright winners (passing shots down the line, and cross court volleys in the open court). In any case, I tried these 8 drills this past weekend. And, they worked. After an hour and half of intermittently doing these drills, and then just hitting around to catch our breath; We did all these drills, had a lot of fun, were more exhausted than usual, but hit the best we ever hit. I can see how if I keep the work up on these extreme-8s, my game and physical condition will reach the next level.If you are a tennis coach teaching clinics, there are probably many more drills you will find useful within this book. But even if you are not, you may find the book very useful just like I did. The drills shown in the book, opens your mind and body to what is possible. Out of the drills shown, it is easy to tweak them a bit to your own needs. Thus, tennis drills becomes also a mental game of creativity.The one drawback of the book is that a slight majority of the drills are explained without drawing. I think the book would have been more effective by concentrating on maybe the best 100 drills and illustrate all of them instead of 245 drills where only a minority of the drills is illustrated. But, overall this is still a valuable book on tennis drills.

This is not a good book. First too many words without illustrative pictures. When I looked at some pictures, I found the setup for different stances illustrated by the author herself is so funny (it is not correct at all, especially her left hand motion). After that, I do not even want to continue to read this book. I do not recommend this book.
