The Bat in My Pocket is written succinctly, reads well, and leaves the reader with not only the story of how a tiny injured bat changed the course of this woman’s life, but also is generous with the knowledge and insight about the behavior and mindset of the female Mexican Freetail bats who are the stars of the story. This book is a vivid testimony to the character of the “Bat Lady” who founded Bat World Sanctuary in Mineral Wells, Texas, and who has gone on to become an ambassador and champion of bats around the world, as well as a go-to person for organizations and/or individuals concerned with bat welfare and stewardship, with saving and raising orphans, and creating enriched environments for non-releasable bats. This book is a wonderful read, and would be a great gift or reading list recommend for teens or adults. Amanda’s writing style is informal and straightforward; thus, the reader is allowed to step immediately into the relationship she describes (with such love and intimacy) about the two years she lived with tiny crippled Sunshine, and how the experience changed her life story with such profundity.

A few months ago I saw a video of an injured fruit bat being cared for in Australia and this piqued my curiosity about bats. This in turn led me to Bat World Sanctuary (BWS) in Texas.Amanda Lollar, the founder of BWS, encountered an injured Mexican Free-tail Bat on the sidewalk in 1989 and nursed her back to health, though she could not be released back to the wild. Along the way she discovered how intellegent, social, and affectionate bats are, and became their life-long advocate. This book is very well-written and an easy read. She describes how Sunshine (the bat) became a loved and respected friend, and she skillfully weaves information about bats into the storyline.I recommend this for all ages. After reading it, I feel we should stop telling children about "the birds and the bees" and start telling them about "the bird and the bees and the bats!"

I read this book about 15 years ago, when I purchased it at the gift shop at Carlsbad Caverns (I think); am now looking it up for my 8-year-old son to read. It can be a little intense emotionally, so the age at which a child can listen to it or read it independently will vary. (I blubbered more than once myself) But I think it's incredibly worthwhile for three reasons: a) it's candid and honestly tender, and clearly shows how the author and her bats connect with one another; b) the reader learns much about the biology and behavior of bats...an uncommon subject c) it's got the elements of any good human-animal story: the development of trust, the refinement of communication, wonder, funny parts, love, grief.

Must read this book, for all ages.

Great book!!!!!! The only thing is that it doesn't have the pictures of some of the bats in the back. Great copy of book, good seller. Just will ask from now on, if it's a copy with or without pics in back. This book is such a great gift for nature lovers!

I read this book many years ago when it first came out. I loved it. I gave it to my grandson. He loved it too. Great read!

We love to watch bats flying at dusk & encourage them in our yarden. We don't want them in our house, however! This book is so well written that it almost convinced me that I wanted a bat as a pet! Three cheers for the author in putting the friendly face of bats out to the public AND for her wonderful bat rescue.

Really enjoyed reading this book. Lots of interesting facts about bats. Easy to read. Almost made me want to find a bat and nurse it back to health!

A High View of Scripture? The Authority of the Bible and the Formation of the New Testament Canon (Evangelical Ressourcement: Ancient Sources for the Church's Future), by Craig D. Allert

From the Back Cover

The Evangelical Ressourcement series is grounded in the belief that there is a wealth of theological, exegetical, and spiritual resources from the patristic era that is relevant for the Christian church today and into the future. Amid the current resurgence in interest in the early church, this series aims to help church thinkers and leaders reappropriate these ancient understandings of Christian belief and practice and apply them to ministry in the twenty-first century. A High View of Scripture? is the third volume in the series. The series editor is D. H. Williams."Allert's passionate insistence on historical integrity and his disarming honesty and candor will render it necessary for us to engage in serious soul searching about our approach to Scripture. This book's convincing argument is also an opportunity for evangelicals to reassert the centrality of both church and tradition and to take both much more seriously than has often been the case. The vigor and erudition with which Allert locates the New Testament in the ecclesial context of the tradition puts evangelicalism firmly in his debt."--Hans Boersma, Regent College; author of Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross"An informed and coherent account of the issues involved in the formation of the canon. A High View of Scripture? is a timely and nuanced critique of the anachronistic approach to canon studies adopted by too many evangelical scholars. It will surely be a valuable aid in helping evangelicals understand and value ever more deeply the wonder and authority of the Holy Spirit, the Scripture, and the church itself."--Christopher A. Hall, associate editor, Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture"Allert asks how it is possible to have a 'high view' of Scripture if it is detached from the realities of the origin and formation of the Bible. This volume has the potential of opening up a useful dialogue among evangelicals on the origin and nature of Scripture and its relation to contemporary theological issues. I commend this book to pastors, students, and biblical scholars who want a challenging discussion of these important issues."--Lee Martin McDonald, Acadia Divinity College

#760,810 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Excellent book written lovingly by an author with an Evangelical background, for such an audience that might be curious about challenging their particular approach to the bible. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in Biblical Canon creation.

The arguments presented, though written from an Evangelical pen, reflects a highly Catholic point of view in the role of Scripture in the life of the Church, and how the Church in turn, was essential in giving Canonocity to the books that make up the Scriptures

Interesting and well written.

I have been very grateful for the "Evangelical Ressourcement" series put out by Baker. To their credit, the series challenges many popular beliefs among Evangelicals regarding the nature of authority, church, scripture and tradition. One of the main critiques that is leveled against Evangelical Protestants is that their understanding of the nature of the Bible is highly ahistorical, anachronistic and circular, claiming the Bible is the word of God because it says so, without ever addressing how the Bible was written and collected together in the first place, totally ignoring the worshipping tradition of the early faithful. In such a view, there is no room for human agency. Such question begging is the wobbly leg of the chair, and this book seeks to remedy that problem without throwing the scriptural baby out with the evangelical bathwater. The author himself, by the way, is a committed Evangelical Christian, so he has no bone to pick with anyone. He is seeking to strengthen the case for a truly "High View" of the Bible that can bear historical critique and benefit from those who defended the message of Christ with their lives. This addition to the series essentially poses these questions: "How did the Bible come about and what was the human activity involved in that process? And once we answer that question, what does that mean for our understanding of the nature and authority of the Bible?" While it is not always an easy pill to swallow, the truth is that modern American Christianity of the Protestant variety, and even the Lutheran Church in the more conservative synods (MS, WS), teach a view of the scriptures that is not in line with the early Church, and theoretically and functionally more akin to the Muslim view of the Quran. The author, Craig Allert, seeks to remedy this distortion by retracing the nature and tradition of the canonization of the Bible, and in particular the New Testament. In the process of this investigation, Allert covers some key doctrines of modern Evangelical hermeneutics (or their presuppositions) that he claims are in disjunction with the Apostolic/Patristic eras, and really with the Bible itself.Challenging the idea that only those who hold to a verbal plenary understanding of inspiration can claim to hold a "High View" of the Bible, he shows convincingly that such a theory is not at all required to safeguard the inspiration of Scripture and is in fact not historically based and does a great deal to actually weaken the authority of the Scripture by providing critics of the Bible with straw men to flog and burn. Here is a brief summary of his main points in chapter order: 1. Evangelicals have developed a mistrust of the historic tradition of the Church as a reaction to their understanding of Reformation history and the abuses of the Roman Church and also, more recently, in the reactionary theology that has characterized the movement since the mid-1800s. The narrowest narrowing of such a reactionary theology is centered around the nature of the Bible, which has become what I mentioned above- verbal plenary inspiration akin to the Islamic view of the Quran (the author himself never makes that comparison by the way, it's mine). 2. The canon was indeed open into the fourth century, although the influence of Adolf Von Harnak has tainted some to believe that it was closed by the end of the second. Moreover, the Rule of Faith (tradition) served as the true canon of the early church in defense against the heretics, not the New Testament. Canon does not equal NT. However, the criteria for scriptural canonicity had to do with how the Christians received the letters or gospels from the beginning and how they measured up against the tradition (Canon of Truth, Rule of Faith), and not as self-authenticating. 3 and 4. The Scriptures are the book of the Church, and they do not precede the Church like a pop-up book, and what constituted scripture in the early church differed from place to place and father to father- it was not a uniform collection; but that was fine, since the tradition safeguarded the gospel. 5. By examining lists of scripture, it is clear that it is anachronistic to claim that sola scriptura existed in the first four centuries. 6. Historical reflection shows us that we must trust that the Holy Spirit did not abandon the Church which formalized the canon of Scripture based upon her tradition. The Spirit is alive and active not only in the written word, but in the very life of the community which interprets the word. Scripture does not interpret itself, which is why sola scriptura was never used to combat the heretics, but rather the Rule of Faith was used to show how heretics were picking and choosing only the parts of the bible that suited their fantasies. This fact refutes the popular myth of a post-apostolic fallen church, a myth that was devised to divide the Scriptures from the Church, since much of the early tradition doesn't look Protestant (all those liturgies, saints, fasting, sacraments!). Moreover, the Bible does not give a clear teaching about what inspiration actually means, so we should be slow to make inerrancy the logical conclusion of it. In other words, we need to take the Bible on terms established by both itself and the community (Church) that created it by the grace of God, rather than imposing our own hermeneutical lenses upon it.There is also a useful appendix that samples the fathers' writings to show that a closed canon of Scripture was not the case until the fourth century.Other useful books include: Tradition, Scripture, and Interpretation: A Sourcebook of the Ancient Church (Evangelical Ressourcement: Ancient Sources for the Church's Future),Evangelicals and Tradition: The Formative Influence of the Early Church (Evangelical Ressourcement: Ancient Sources for the Church's Future),Reading the Old Testament with the Ancient Church: Exploring the Formation of Early Christian Thought (Evangelical Ressourcement: Ancient Sources for the Church's Future),Retrieving the Tradition and Renewing Evangelicalism: A Primer for Suspicious Protestants,Reading Scripture With the Church Fathers,The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism and By What Authority?: An Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition. Enjoy!

This is a very good and very important discussion about how the Bible was formed. It refutes the evangelical perspective that the canon was instantaneously "inspired" by God from the very beginning and that all the patristic fathers did was recognize that inspiration and pile them between covers. The books that make up the Western and Eastern Orthodox canon required decades of liturgical usage, general evaluation of orthodoxy and communal discussion before acceptance. In fact, some of them, such as the controversial if not notorious Apocalypse of John, were deemed non-canonical by many in the early church (and to this day the Greek Orthodox Church refuses to even discuss it in their liturgy, a wise move that all other churches should emulate.) The author describes himself as an evangelical scholar, but I wonder with how much approbation his little book will receive in the ranks of these infamously narrow-minded so-called "Christians" of the American evangelical movement. In any case, for anyone interested in biblical history, a nice quick read that addresses many of the salient arguments about "inerrancy and infallibility." I would have liked to have seen some discussion of the role the Constaninian revolution had in accelerating the "formal" canonization process (notable that no ecumenical council ever affirmed or denied the modern canon) and the diversity of biblical canons that exist today (notably the Ethiopian and Syrian, which add and omits texts deemed canonical in European based Christianity.) But that would have required a much larger book, and this one is an easy one or two day read.

What an insightful work on the origins and formation of Scripture! A very thorough work that dispels many of the modern Protestant views and suppositions. I highly recommend to any "learner" or Theologian.

I am giving the book a lower rating, because (my opinion), it looks like the author's intended audience was not for the general public, but rather for religious academic. This makes it difficult for folks without religion-academic background to comprehend some of the historical and rational put forth.

This book is part of a series of works aiming to bring patristic scholarship to bear on problems in interpretation and proclamation for evangelicals. The author makes simple observations - that the canon of scripture was not solidified and closed by the second century (as Harnack claimed) and that there was indeed a church before there was a canon. The first of his two observations is more controversial than the second, but has better support from patristic sources. Allert challenges the dominant evangelical understanding of "theopneustos" in 2 Tim. 3:16 by recourse to the patristic sources that use the same apellative to describe phenomena unrelated to scripture. This is not a book that offers easy answers to the difficult questions surrounding what we mean when we say that scripture is inspired. Also, I would have appreciated a bit more interaction with the source material like the review of recent scholarship on the effect that Marcion, Montanism and Gnosticism had on the development of the canon. But as an introduction is it quite sufficient and I expect to use the footnotes to guide further study of this area of interpretation.

“Absorbing, witty, and persuasive.”—BusinessWeek Top 10 Business Books of 2004“Brilliant. . . . The case Schwartz makes for a correlation between our emotional state and what he calls the ‘tyranny of choice’ is compelling, the implications disturbing. . . . An insightful book.”—Christian Science Monitor“A revolutionary and beautifully reasoned book about the promiscuous amount of choice that renders the consumer helpless. A must-read.”—Martin Seligman, author of Authentic HappinessWhether we’re buying a pair of jeans, ordering coffee, selecting a wireless carrier, applying to college, choosing a doctor, or setting up a 401(k), everyday decisions—both big and small—have become increasingly complex due to the over-whelming abundance of choice. For Americans, choice is the hallmark of individual freedom and self-determination. But having too much choice can actually be detrimental: choice overload can make you question your decisions before you make them, set up unrealistically high expectations, and lead to self-blame for any failure. The result is decision-making paralysis, anxiety, and perpetual stress, and even clinical depression. In The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz shows how the dramatic explosion in choice—from the mundane to the profound challenges of balancing career, family, and individual needs—has led us to seek that which makes us feel worse. Synthesizing current research, Schwartz makes the counterintuitive case that reducing choices can greatly reduce stress, anxiety, and the frenzy of daily life, and offers eleven practical steps to help you limit choices to a manageable number, focus on the important ones, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.

Interesting and thought provoking read. The dizzying array of choices in modern life apparently has resulted overall in a decrease in contentment. The author discovered this upon attempting to purchase some jeans a few years back. Apparently he hadn't bought jeans in quite awhile and was surprised and perplexed by the vast permutations of that basic item of clothing. Some practical ideas here for simplifying life and maximizing pleasure. Like "don't drink expensive wine all the time even if you can afford it." Because we adjust our expectations and end up on a hedonic treadmill.Get it used.

"The fact that some choice is good doesn't necessarily mean that more choice is better. As I will demonstrate, there is a cost to having an overload of choice. As a culture, we are enamored of freedom, self-determination, and variety, and we are reluctant to give up any of our options. But clinging tenaciously to all the choices available to us contributes to bad decisions, to anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction-- even to clinical depression."~ Barry Schwartz from The Paradox of ChoiceBarry Schwartz is a Professor of Social Theory and Social Action at Swarthmore College and this book is packed with Big Ideas on how, as the sub-title suggests, "the culture of abundance robs us of satisfaction."In short, we now have so many options that we're suffering."I believe we make the most of our freedoms by learning to make good choices about the things that matter, while at the same time unburdening ourselves from too much concern about the things that don't.""We can imagine a point at which the options would be so copious that even the world's most ardent supporters of freedom of choice would begin to say, "enough already." Unfortunately, that point of revulsion seems to recede endlessly into the future."Here are some of the Big Ideas:1. Gratitude = happy with choices2. Being Seduced - By branding. We all are.3. Maximizers vs. Satisficers - Huge idea.4. Perfectionism - Tends to go with maximizing.5. Domain Specificity - Maximizing is domain specific. To find 250+ more reviews visit http://bit.ly/BrianReviews

Excellent book about making choices using a different approach. Tells us, in summary, that to maximize our choices, just find an option that satisfied you ---- and by being satisfied, it has been proven to maximize our results. Believe it or not, I just spoiled the entire book for you! That is all the book boils down to. However, it explains the science behind why being satisfied is the path to satisfactory maximization. It spends the entire book explaining why. But, it's very interesting! You will not regret reading it.

THE PARADOX OF CHOICE by Barry SchwartzFour and Half Stars- Must Read for anyone interested in "decision making"A fantastic book on why more is less (or less is more). It is a fantastic essay on how the culture of abundance robs us of satisfaction in life, and more importantly bring in depression. It shares enough case studies and examples of why more is less, and how to increase satisfaction life.Key Idea: Giving people too many choices tends to lessen their satisfaction.“Maximizers” are people who, given a choice, will exhaustively search all the options, seeking all possible information, in order to make the best possible choice. This behavior generally consumes a lot of time, and often leads to nagging doubts, perhaps where no one clear winner emerged.“Satisficers” are those who settle for a choice that is “good enough” for them These people are generally happier with their choice, and spend less time choosing, leaving them free to enjoy other things.Counterintuitive wisdom1. We are better of if we embraced voluntary constrains of choice on our freedom of choice, instead of rebelling against in thme2. We are better off when we choose good enough instead of seeking the best3. Lower your expectations about the results of your decisions4. We are better off if our decisions are irreverseable5. We are better off if we paid less attention to what others do around usSummary of the book by Chapter:Lets go shopping: Every area of our life from the super market to the education market offers way too much choice.New Choice: Filtering our extraneous information is the key function of consciousnesses.Deciding and Choosing: Figure your goals out, rank them, evaluate options and their likelyhood to meet goals, pick winning option .Growth of options and opportunities means decisions require more effort, mistakes are more likely and psychological ocnsequence of mistakes is more severe. When Only The Best Will Do: When you seek and only the best will do you are a MAXIMIZER. When you seek the good enough and not worry about consequences you are a SATISFIER.Maximizers tend to: make more product comparisons, take longer to decide, compare their decisions to others, experience more regret that others, feel less positive about their decisions.Choice & happiness: Every choice we make is a testament to our autonomy. The choice of when to be a chooser may be the most important choice we have to make. The more control people have, the less helpless they feel, the less depressed they will be.Time spent with dealing with choice is time spent away from being in life. Some constrain can afford liberty, while freedom will bring enslavement, it is wise to choose the the constrains.Missed opportunities: Examine opportunity costs - more the choices, we diminish our subjective experience of benefits, thus we are worse off. When people have too many options and trade offs, they avoid making decisions options we consider usually suffer from companions with other optionsOne reason why maximizers are less happy, less satisfied with their lives, and more depressed than satisfiers is precisely because the taint of tradeoffs and opportunity costs washes out much that hshould be satisfying about the decisions they make. The Problem of Regret: Two factors affect regret a) personal responsibility for the result b) how easily we can imagine the counter factual better alternative.Regret looms more for the maximizer than the satisfier.Everything suffers from Comparisons: Curse fof high expectations, curse of social comparisons due to race for status,Maximizers are more concerned with social comparisons than satisfiers. Increasing available options seems to usually reduce satisfaction.Whose Fault is it?:Helplessness induced by failure or lack of control causes depression. Depression more common when only the best will do.What to do about Choice?:1)Choose when to choose.- think of cost associated with decisions.2) Be a chooser not a picker -3)Satisfy more, maximize less4)Think about opportunity costs of opportunity costs - dont be swayed by new and improved5) Make decisions non reversible6) Practice an attitude of gratitude7)Regret less8) Anticipate adaptation - focus on how things are as opposed to as they were9) Control expectations10) Avoid social comparisons11)Learn to love constrainsThis book is worth the read, to hammer home the point of embracing a satisfaction based life, and how to learn to love constrains. BUY THIS BOOK, which was voted as a TOP 10 book for the year by Business Week to understand why" less is more, and how to increase the satisfaction in your life."Mahipal Luniawww.TheRenaissancePath.com

The book’s thesis, summarized in its title and subtitle, is supported by three sections, eleven chapters. The reader is reminded that freedom and autonomy are critical to well being, and that choice is critical to freedom and autonomy. But, the reader learns, the vast number of choices available today often is experienced as a source of distress. I might describe some of the many excellent examples the author uses, or the potential solutions that the author proposes in the fourth section, eleventh and final chapter. But there are so many to choose from that preparation for a fuller review would distress me. So I choose not to write more, an act of freedom and autonomy that supports my continued well-being, and simply say, “It’s a good book; I like it.”

I became familiar with Mr. Coates when I read the 'reparations' article in "The Atlantic" while visiting my sister's house. This book is a more comprehensive look at the horror and degradation inflicted by white America on those of African (or native American, or . . . ) descent, ie, anybody else of less than totally white background and appearance. As a 70 year old white guy, I'm amazed and ashamed that this oppression continues almost unabated until this day, without ever having become a thing that our alleged 'better natures' would not have overcome. But no, as you read this indictment of the non-unitedness of the United States, it becomes clear that, from the founding fathers on, we have been a nation of, by, and for white people, without any real regard for the way that people of color (you know, any of those non-white ones) are treated. It's enormously sad and shameful that a nation of such high stated principles would allow itself to become the racist place that is in evidence pretty much everywhere you look. I think that everyone should read this book and keep close in memory the realities that it documents. We REALLY should be doing better for our brother and sister citizens. Truth is though, that we're not, and that's a huge part of what this book is about. It's a staggeringly painful and revealing piece of writing. In some movie, some character asks of some jury "Now, imagine if she was white". You may have seen the movie, and understood the starkness of the contrast between what was being asked and the reality of what was. That's where we are as a nation, and where we all are as citizens. Try to imagine how tolerable those centuries of indignities would be if inflicted on ANY member of your family. If you're white, you really DO have to imagine, if you're not, no imagination is required - it's what you live.I wish Mr. Coates well in continuing to try to educate the population at large, and hope that his message gets absorbed by people who might otherwise not know what has been and still is, going on. It's much too easy to be white and not really know about the depth and duration of this problem; WAY easier than it should be. Think of this book as the textbook for "Black Studies for White Folks" 1A. Spend some time with this book and get yourself up to speed.

This book is truly exceptional in so many ways. It is a dense read, so prepare for that. All of the essays were published in The Atlantic and I had read some of them. What makes this book particularly remarkable besides Coates' exceptional writing, is what I call the pre-chapters to the essays. Here, Coates' shares what he was reading, thinking, working on in terms of his writing, and how he thinks the essay held up over time. These reflections are especially poignant and help the reader get a glimpse into the inner workings of Coates' thinking and piecing it together. The book really comes together in the last 2-3 chapters and is absolutely resplendent. I recommend this book for anyone exploring the current state of affairs in the U.S. regarding race and racism, white supremacy, and all the ways in which these systems suppress people of color in sometimes the most violent of ways. However, I also recommend this book to people trying to figure out how to reflect on their own work because I think these pre-chapters are an excellent example of the deep dive into meta-cognitive processes and recognizes that we are all a work in progress. Happy reading!

"We were eight years in power" is a quote from South Carolina state congressman Thomas Miller, an African-American who was elected at the end of Reconstruction. He was highlighting the achievements made during Reconstruction, arguing against the disenfranchisement of black voters. They had built schools, established charities, educated the deaf and dumb, and built infrastructure. But his very argument was a threat to white supremacy. Coates quotes W.E.B. DuBois in his book: "If there was one thing that South Carolina feared more than bad Negro government, it was good Negro government."This incomplete & halted era of reconstruction is the framework against which Ta-Nehisi Coates sets his book. He pulls eight essays written around the eight years of the Obama presidency, and shows how "the symbolic power of Barack Obama's presidency - that whiteness was no longer strong enough to prevent peons from taking up residence in the castle - assaulted the most deeply rooted notions of white supremacy and instilled fear in its adherents and beneficiaries."The essays chosen for the book tackle a myriad of topics: the erasure of black history, mass incarceration, what it means to be black in the public eye, and, in my opinion the most compelling essay of them all, the case for reparations. Coates provides notes before each essay, explaining the context in which they were written, why they were relevant then, and why they are relevant now. The book shows an evolution, both in Coates' writing and thought, but also in the national conversation surrounding race, swirling towards the final chapter & epilogue, in which Donald Trump, the main force behind birtherism and much of the racist drum-beating, has been elected president. This book is brilliantly written, incisive, and extremely relevant. Read it with your families, use it in your classrooms, and give copies to your friends.

This is a book every white person needs to read. It will hurt. But that is as it should be. We live in an apartheid state. This man can think. And write. His prose is often pleasingly lyrical, even when weighing heavy matters. I find myself wanting to read it aloud. If I were younger, I might say his prose, when it flows, sounds like hip hop, but since I am older than the author, I’d have to say it sounds like jazz to me. Not John Coltrane. More like Miles Davis.

One of the best books I've ever read! Mr. Coates has a rhythmic, poetic way with words that make reading this very harsh information almost pleasurable. This is the kind of book that I will gift to young people that need to know the truth of this country's history...that would be ALL young people!

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history. What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

Grand Central: How a Train Station Transformed America, by Sam Roberts

From Booklist

Grand Central Terminal in New York City owes its current incarnation to a fatal train crash in 1902, which was caused partially by human error and partially by design flaws in the New York Central Railroad system. The rebuilding of the terminal was a massive municipal project marshaling the talent and financial resources of leading architects, engineers, and artists. The result is an urban landmark akin to a palace as well as a transportation hub. Roberts, an urban-affairs correspondent for the New York Times, seems to have a love affair with the place, and he describes the building, evolution, and unique features of the terminal with an infectious passion. It is, as he notes, a major tourist attraction, the setting for key scenes in many motion pictures, and a center through which an estimated half a million people move each day. This well-done piece of urban history will appeal to both railroad enthusiasts and general readers. --Jay Freeman

I was born and raised in New York, where I resided 45 years of my life. For most of those years, there are certain illuminating memories one can never forget. 'Grand Central Station' is one of them. I recall for several years as my dad commuted from Long Island to NYC five days a week to work in Con Edison for 33 years, and all the trips I made for many different reasons to use it for transportation. He always spoke about Grand Central Station as being a part of his life as a commuter, running from train-to-train with hundreds of busy people who were able to work good jobs, because the transportation was available. With over 10 million people who live in NYC, combined with tourists, Grand Central has become a valuable landmark in history. I knew conductors and several commuters, who were personal friends, and I remember that Grand Central was a popular topic for conversation. Sam Roberts of the New York Times and Pete Hamil highlight the history of the famous Grand Central Terminal, celebrating its 100th anniversary. The authors take the reader on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour as they guide you through tunnels, passageways, the command center, and much more. Tourists and commuters have their own stories, but the most interesting are stories from commuters who traveled on it half their lives. The legend of its opening to modern day, and the influence upon suburban expansion and growth in the nation is incredible. Its history with stories and cultural effects is amazing, and certainly an unforgettable landmark in our memories. Millions of people share their own personal stories about this elite, historical railroad, including the homeless. Interesting, educational, and enjoyable read. Highly recommended!

I do not live in New York City but have been a frequent visitor since my college days (mid 1960s). I first visited it toward the end of the PennCentral railroad. I witnessed the terminal's decline when one could not venture into the lower gate level and one of my favorate bakeries (located on that lower level) closed. I have also been to the terminal many times since its renewal. At least two or three times a year my wife and I just visit the terminal to walk around, have a meal (the Grand Central Oyster Bar is my lunch favorite), go through the markets, etc. I have always been impressed with GCT as a building and as a functional organism. Mr. Robert's book haa added greatly to my appreciation of the terminal and makes me yearn for yet another couple of hours there. The book is an "easy read." The text font is easy on the eyes and large enough for even older eyes. The layout is good. There are lots of pictures, though I wish they were bigger. However, the images are clear and add to the text. I wish there was a little more on the technical aspects of moving trains in and out of the terminal and images taken during the building of the terminal. However, these criticisms are minor. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone with an interest in this monument.

Still reading this, but it is hard to put down. One the greatest pleasures of visiting NYC 3 or 4 times a year is to spend time in Grand Central Station.

Having grown up outside NYC and travelled on Metro North countless times, I found this book fascinating and well-written. Not sure it would appeal to everyone, but history buffs dig in!

Thrilling, exciting, magical.

This is a well researched, insightfully written paean to an iconic building -- one that in many ways transformed the city of New York as much as the experience of arrival and departure by rail. The writing is superb. My only criticism is that I would have liked the book to be more lavishly illustrated with better photographs of the contemporary state of the building. There are, however, many good historical pictures and you will certainly get a sense of the terminal through post-restoration photos, even if you have not been there in person. Highly recommended.

Great gift he loved it

I just want to go there after reading this book. Thank you for offering this wonderful history of this great historic place.

I got this as a gift for my husband and he loved it. It is not quite a coffee table style book - there are others out there that have more and probably larger, better photos- but it is a great narrative and story. And that was what I was looking for. The photos included are also lovely.
