Even that I am not a musician myself, I got the book to help support my musician clients in the development of marketing their careers. To my surprise, I found that the content of the book is actually everything and more for any professional in the industry. The content is so specific, detailed and it's so full of resources that I don't even need to go anywhere else to find the answers. An extremely well written guide for anyone who wants to grow their music careers or for anyone helping musicians draft their path, getting out there in front of presenters and promoters, negotiating great gigs and profiting from successful touring. This is my complete Bible for securing gigs, my first go-to resource and one of the most seek-after books in my shelves. This is a good book that's been around for years. Unfortunately, the Kindle edition leaves out all the sidebar tips and contracts. As far as I can see, most of this is simply not available unless you either buy the print version of the book, or pay for the contracts at the product website.The omissions are mentioned inside the Kindle edition, but I didn't understand I was buying an incomplete version until I had already done it. I opted to return the ebook.

Excellent read for anyone committed to the grind of the industry. The primary reason I love this book so much is the resources she includes at the end of every chapter that I'm still digging into to this day. I've had this book for about two years.

As a long time touring performer and self-booker I have experienced just about everything that can go wrong booking and playing shows on the road. Most of the worst things that happened were because I let my guard down trying to save myself time and effort. I should have put that time and effort into booking the gig properly and I would not have been spending twice as much time putting out fires because I booked on a verbal agreement or failed to get a deposit.If you have been fortunate to have had a good booking agent this book will give you a new respect for what they do to make the gig go smoothly and get you paid. Even if you don't end up doing most of your own booking, you will know how to evaluate a booking agent who says they are going to do it for you.

This book promises inside info on how to get your self booked. Maybe if it were still 1950. Basically, the book tells a moron how to plan and organize their day. It offers great booking tips like "make a list." Total waste of time and money.

This book helps organize your overall plan and then helps make it happen. Some of the advice can be applied to any job. I recommend it for anyone trying to get serious about the business behind music. A great read. I wish the contract examples were available on the kindle version.

Philippa Gregory has always been a really good writer whose books always seem to have been thoroughly researched and thus historically accurate. I must admit, however, that my interest in British royalty did not match her prolific writings about them. It was with great relief, therefore, that I read this incredible dramatization of the sea-merchant component of the slave trade in Great Britain in the early 1800's. Very suspenseful and one of the best reads I've had in 2016. I bought this as a gift; my friend who I bought it for loves it and can't put it down. Thank you, Ms. Gregory! You are a mainstay for one who likes fiction, but is fussy about reading something worthwhile. This writer is right up there with Barbara Kingsolver, T.C. Boyle and the few others of that ilk who are currently writing.

This is an intriguing book by the author, with a story line that is simple enough. Frances Scott, an impoverished thirty-four year old, gently reared daughter of a cleric, is left to fend for herself by her dead father. Her uncle, Lord Scott, has been assisting her and has found her work as a governess, a job that she loathes. When an upstart tradesman, Josiah Cole, proposes matrimony, she jumps at the chance. It is a marriage of the utmost convenience.What she does not know is that her husband and his spinster sister, Sarah, trade in slaves, as well as other commodities. When a shipment of slaves comes in, Frances is expected to train the slaves to be servants that can then be sold to wealthy families. After all, having an African servant was all the rage in late eighteenth century England. Her instruction of her captives is a slow process, giving Frances an opportunity to get to know her slaves and the cruelties that have been inflicted upon them. She is, however, without resources to help them.Along the way, she falls in love with Mehuru, her major domo, and he with her. Therein lies the rub. In eighteenth century England, it was unheard of for a lady of gentle breeding to do so, and Frances has not the strength to follow her heart. Meanwhile, her ambitious husband is oblivious to all that is going on in his household, and involves himself in one scheme after another, trusting on some new found friendships that are suspicious at best. When he finds that his "friends" have merely taken him for a ride, all hell breaks loose.Much of the dialogue between Frances and Mehuru is pretty laughable, reading like a bad Harlequin romance. Their love affair simply does not ring true. Moreover, the characters in the book are too one dimensional and are pretty much caricatures. Overall, the book is a choppy, uneven affair, but a still a moderately enjoyable one, if one is a fan of the author. Others may not be so forgiving. Still, there are parts of the book that are somewhat interesting, and I was sufficiently intrigued to get the Masterpiece Theatre production of the book for which the author herself wrote the screenplay.

Philippa Gregory is an enjoyable and dependable story teller. You know that you will meet well developed characters who act out unlikely plots and hold your interest, even if story lines become a bit predictable. A Respectable Trade, the story of a series of unlikely events set in Bristol toward the end of the 18th Century, follows this Gregory formula and solidly delivers.Mehuru is a priest in the African kingdom of Yoruba and is on a quest to save his country from the ravages of slavery when he is beset upon and captured by white slavers from England. Perhaps ironically, his own slave is captured as well. Meanwhile, back in England, landless and aging Frances Scott is wearing her welcome thin under the roof of her uncle's lordly family and thus applies for a job as governess. Instead of a job, she is offered marriage by the man who interviewed her, one Josiah Cole. Cole is a struggling shipping merchant with ambition who sees ties to the Scott family as a stepping stone on his road to wealth and respect. His cold fish sister Sarah isn't too keen on Josiah's attempt to climb the social ladder. With no other options, Frances marries beneath her station and tries to make the best of it.The charges she was originally interviewed to govern turn out to be a dozen or so African men, women and children. Sarah and Josiah believe that they can train these select slaves to be excellent house servants who speak the Queen's English and within 6 months turn a pretty profit by selling to select Bristol families. Frances, who has never considered the grisly details about how her families (new and of origin) make their money, finds herself questioning all she has known. She sure likes the comforts of upper class living... but when she suddenly realizes the "stock" have faces, names and feelings, Frances discovers new feelings of her own. Is she an accessory to a crime? A teacher? A respectalbe wife from a respectable family? Her feelings become especially new and uncomfortable when Mehuru walks into her dingy merchant dining room...The details of the story which follow are both slightly predictable and unfathomable considering the time (Mehuru quickly becomes fluent speaking and reading English and manages to be rather mobile and unsupervised for what one might expect for a slave in Bristol during the height of the trade). However, the themes which underlie the story are well worth exploring. Is the grass really greener on the other side? Does wealth equate respectability? Does race matter? Does social class? How much risk should one take when investing? How much research? Where does wealth come from? Who really pays? Can love really over come all?In our ever growing global capitalist economy, these are important questions to consider. Why not reflect upon social justice and responsibility while reading a solidly enjoyable novel?

As an elementary school library tech, I am always looking for "lesson" stories to read in-between the silly, funny ones. I'm very pleased with IT'S MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. It's engaging and funny and with colorful illustrations to keep students interested. As I read it, I could almost hear my students gasping and commenting on what Cora June said or did that wasn't nice. By the end of the story I appreciated that Cora June is aware and working on her behavior instead of suddenly changed. I'm looking forward to ordering IT'S MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY for my school library. Julia Cook also gives some amazing tips at the end of the book on what to do and/or say to children that are going through this tough stage in their lives. Author Julia Cook always seems to pinpoint bad behaviors that can be nipped in the bud, and she knows what to say to provide guidance. Being bossy is an issue with a lot of young kids, of course. We see Cora June being bossy at home and at school and she's not making friends. Her mother and teacher try to impress upon her the need to be "flexible" and she eventually realizes she can have fun even when she's not in charge. She learns to ask others what they want to do. About the Author

Mark Rashid is an internationally-acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to assess situations from a horseÂ’s point of view. He has been working with horses since he was ten, and he was especially lucky in his youth to meet a wise "old man" (Walter Pruitt) who taught him to use communication, not force, in working with horses. Ever since, he has committed himself to finding the quiet but effective ways to resolve even the most difficult problems with horses. Rashid gives dozens of clinics each year, as well as private lessons. His clinic format of one-on-one work with horse and rider is immensely popular and has gained him legions of fans around the world. In addition to his clinics, Rashid has presented at such events as the National American Humane Horse Abuse Investigators School, the Colorado Horse Fair, and Equitana USA. He has also been a guest on NPRÂ’s The Horse Show, and heÂ’s been featured on the Nature series on PBS. There was nothing I did not like about this book. Having read another book or two by Mr. Rashid, I knew I was in for a treat. His insight into this particular horse and how, if Mark remained patient, the (also patient) horse would in due time show him the solution to whatever situation they were currently in. I don't find this surprising at all, as I have seen my own horses at times behave in similar ways although the circumstances were generally not as dramatic.Horses are natural teachers if we allow them to be, and if we don't overreact when something is going on that we don't understand. So often, the horse knows! Thank you, Mark, for reminding us to stop, look, and use our intuition.

In Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse, Mark Rashid provides some lovely inner workings that were brought about by this particular horse's behavior. Each horse can teach us something about life and about horses, but being aware of the situation enough to pick up valuable lessons is very humbling and useful. Each time there was a problem in communication, the horse was actually trying to help his rider with the job at hand! Buck offered exactly what his rider needed, just maybe not what he wanted at the time. It would have been a missed opportunity if Rashid had given up on Buck. Instead, he thought about the situation and eventually learned some personal pointers that worked better with his horse and all of life. He shares these pointers and how he deduced them from Buck's behavior. I call that valuable training (for the human).The reader does not have to own horses to enjoy this book. I consider this is Rashid's best book to date.

Oh how I enjoyed this book! Mark Rashid seems to step aside in the narrative to let his horse, Buck, teach us. Our willingness to listen doesn't amount to time wasted either.This isn't a how-to-ride book. Instead, it's a how-to-learn-a-bit-about-life (from a horse) book. By the time the story closes, we understand - along with Mark - that Buck's survival strategies teach us the value of going through life with these principles: Be non-confrontational, plan ahead, be persistent, be consistent, and fix setbacks and move on.If you felt even a whisper of wisdom in that list (read it again if you wish), I urge you to read this beautiful book. Mark is generous with his reader, able to write clearly, and one of the best horsemen in the US today.This work is a treat to read, and I'll end my review before I ruin your experience with Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse by telling you about the amusing anecdotes and adventures that make it a page turner. Enjoy!

I read all of Mark Rashid's books. His insight to horses and people amazes me and his way of imparting his knowledge is unsurpassed. I never had the opportunity to attend one of his clinics, an event I would have paid hundreds to attend.

Another great book from Mark. I enjoyed reading it.

You can't go wrong with Mark Rashid! I loved this book and it made me think differently about my horsemanship and my horse's behavior than I ever have before. Definitely recommend!
